      Unfortunately they’re doomed, much like the red wolf, not enough of them to avoid interbreeding, they also unfortunately fall victim to domesticated dog illness like distemper and considering there’s not many of them it’s a damn shame

    I traveled across western Canada and I was very lucky to see a grey wolf in northern BC just below the Yukon. It was by itself crossing the road and stopped just before going into the woods and it gave me enough time to take a few pictures. Best vacation I took in my life just seeing the wildlife was unbelievable I got to see a herd of bison, grizzly bears, black bears and the red phase, bighorn sheep, elk, BC moose & Yukon moose, seals, American bald eagle and many other animals. I drove 20,000km in a month. I was born and raised a city boy from Toronto so seeing all this wildlife was a dream come true. Road trips are a million times better than going down south to a all inclusive hotel and sitting on a beach doing nothing for a week or two.

      Dear Annie.
      Though I am an ardent hunter and I understand the need for flock and herd protection, I find myself unable to pull the trigger on any members of the cat or dog family. Good flock guardian dogs are far better at livestock protection than any hunter with a rifle.

      @anniehill9909 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@knockemoutjohnjustjohn2763 Indeed they are; it's very sad that while people in some countries manage to co-exist wth wolves and run livestock, so many demonise them. I was shocked to hear how foxes are vilified in the UK, too. They're endemic and only trying to live their lives in a dreadfully overcrowded, wildlife bereft country.

    I’d like to note that the red wolf is most likely a distinct species. Recent studies have even showed that an isolated coyote x red wolf hybrid population in Louisiana and Texas posses genetics alleles distinct from gray wolves and coyotes. Another study looking at genetic evidence and fossils also suggested red wolves colonized America before coyotes and gray wolves and once had a larger distribution.

    I saw a Red Wolf in my front yard. I live in Alabama, 15 kilometers north of Montgomery. I had walked out of my home just after dark to retrieve my briefcase from my car parked not ten meters from my home. I guess I had made it about halfway to my car when my wife turned on our exterior lights. He wasn't five meters away from me. We just looked at each other for a moment as I started drawing my 9mm pistol out to protect myself(we carry guns in America, especially the south). He took off into the thicket to the right of my home and I gratefully let him. I live in a rural area, but I literally grew up in these very same woods and had never seen a Red Wolf. This sighting was in October of 2010 and I haven't seen another since. I had no idea that they were rare, thanks for the education.

      @@TsukiCove Some have recently been released into the Barrington ranges in NSW: the first on the mainland since dingoes were introduced. As well as bringing an endemic predator back to its ecosystem, there is hope that they will prey on the cats and foxes that cause so much damage, dingoes, of course, being outlawed in most of Oz. The other reason for their introduction is to have a second population in case the facial tumour disease, which is killing so many devils in Tasmania, cause them to become extinct there.

    • @anserbauer309
      @anserbauer309 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@TsukiCove Over the years, colonists attempted to introduce the red fox to Tasmania several times, thankfully without success. Early colonists reported seeing Tassie devils destroying the dens of foxes and eating the cubs. It's hoped that with reintroduction to the mainland, fox populations may be better controlled in the areas the devils live.
      Red foxes on the mainland are out of control. I've driven into town from my farm three times this week in the middle of the day and each time I've seen a large red fox hunting out in the open along the verge of the road with absolutely no fear of the traffic going by. Up until 6 years ago when I invested in my VFD, they would regularly stroll around the farm in broad daylight, picking off poultry and lambs as they pleased, except in the alpaca field, where the alpacas were very intolerant of their intrusions. (VFD=very fast dog: a whippet/kelpie cross).

    The largest of all canines would be the extinct Epicyon haydeni, which lived in North America during the Late Miocene (circa 10-6 mya), and it could reach 300-400 lb, as much as an average-sized male lion today and was much stockier than modern canines and had powerful, bone-crushing jaws, making it analogous to a spotted hyena. It was part of the basal Borophaginae subfamily, which are only distantly related to today's canines, but a more modern and more recent type of large canine is the dire wolf (Aenocyon dirus), which was similar in height and length to its cousin the gray wolf (Canis lupus), and even coexisted with it in Late Pleistocene North America, but it was notably stockier and thus heavier (by 40 lb or so), averaging about 130-150 lb, and it was specifically adapted for hunting megafauna like bison and horses.

The Indian wolf is similar in structure to the Eurasian wolf, but is smaller, more slightly built, and has shorter fur with little to no underfur. It is typically around 57-72 cm (22-28 in) at shoulder height, with males ranging from 19 to 25 kg (42 to 55 lb) and females 17-22 kg (37-49 lb) in weight. Its length ranges from 103 to 145 cm (41 to 57 in) from nose to tail.

    I hope the Ethiopian wolf and the African wild dogs can be saved from extinction. They're both considered endangered species.😢

    The biggest gray wolves are the timber wolves from Canada, the artic wolves, the mckenzie valley wolf is the biggest

      @soldatheero ปีที่แล้ว

      exactly, thank you. was disappointed he did not mention this. arbitrary he takes red wolf and other types of wolves as subspecies then just stops at the grey wolf when the Timberwolves in Canada and the arctic are way bigger and more imposing

      no he said red wolf might be subspecies. He clearly thinks timber and artic are subspecies@@soldatheero

    If you do read comments... I was watching a planet earth scene with hippos and thought of a good list I think. Animals that are real cute as baby's but grow up not so cute. Hippos are my only example kff the top of my head but recency bias

    So no mention of the timberwolf or arctic wolf? also he says a coyote is "slightly smaller" than a wolf. Try half the size or less, wouldn't call that slight
