      It was a pond.
      Not that deep
      BUT
That means it's quite likely there were rocks and other debris around the car?
      .
You go in backwards, the water is up past the roofline *outside* the car.
      What's your first reaction?
      .
1 of 2 in this case(?)
      .
      1) "The car is fairly well sealed.... Call for help!
      .
      2) "Get out fast!!"
      .
It seems she may have chosen option 1?
      .
What if she called and said "I'm in the pond, the water's coming in!"
      .
First reaction of the person on the phone?
      .
"We're on our way... GET OUT NOW!!" ?
      .
What might you do at that point?
There's a good chance that rather than thinking "I have 2-3 minutes before the car fills" the instructions of "get out" is the last thing you need to trigger your flight instinct.
You open the door, maybe an inch.
      The door hits a rock.
      .
Water is now coming in FAST.
You try to close the door, but the edge is in silt, it's got other stones in it.
      They stop the door closing.
      Now you're in trouble.
      .
Instead of 1-2 minutes you have 10 seconds.
Do you try that for, or go to the other doors?
      .
      We'll never know.
      .
There's possibly an irony, if this was the chain of events.
      .
It's likely that if she had hit the "open rear door" button, the falcon doors *would* have lifted away from any obstruction.
      .
      All speculation, but quite possible.

    1. Mythbusters had an episode on escaping from submerged cars. Worth watching for everyone, it already saved lives.
    2. It's much easier to escape from an EV than a gas car, because the battery keeps the car upright, while the weight of the engine flips it, and can flip again as it fills up. That makes infinitely harder to get out and find the surface.
    3. First thing you should do if you drive into water is opening the door. You have a few seconds before it becomes hard and then impossible.
    4. If it's too late to open the door, then roll down the window, you should have plenty of time for that in a Tesla. Not much in ICE cars, as the car flips and the front doors get submerged fast.
    5. If that doesn't work, climb to the back seat, the rear windows stay above water longer.
    6. There are special tools for breaking the window. But if the car keeps flipping randomly you may not find it in time. Still better than nothing.
    7. If all else fails, you can still get out easily. Stay calm, stay still, slow down your breathing, conserve air. When the car is completely filled with water, the doors will open easily. In a modern car you may have to use the mechanical emergency release. You should know where these are in your car.
    8. You can increase your chances by taking a few scuba diving lessons. With little practice you can stretch out your air supply drastically, and you'll be comfortable being deep underwater. And it's really fun too, so win-win.
    9. There was an interesting experiment in the Mythbusters episode. They installed a high-voltage motor into the door and it was able to roll down the window even fully submerged.
Could be another great use case for the 48V architecture.
    10. Another thing that Tesla and other manufacturers could do is using the door Cybertrtuck/Mach-E style opening mechanism to help push against the water pressure. Allegedly the Cybertruck's is strong enough to break an inch thick ice, so it could be strong enough to open the door even when it's mostly submerged. The water would rush in for a few seconds, but as the pressure equalizes the door should open normally.
Could be activated automatically when someone tries the open the door while the car is submerged.

      my windows crank down.
Seriously, though, this is NOT just an EV problem. Across the board windows as well as door locks are controlled electronically now, essentially meaning that the signal goes to the computer then the computer (hopefully) activates the door, There are problems with doors opening while driving, or conversely locking and refusing to respond.
Yes many have manual over-rides, but too many people don't even know they exist or how to use them. We DON'T need this excess complexity.

The only way I can see this being a special case for Tesla, is that they are far more likely to providing an update that makes the car open the windows automatically in case the car gets completely covered in water. This feature needs to be possible to shut of for when cleaning the car though.

The only thing that could put some blame on Tesla in this article is the gear shift.
From what I understand the gearshift stalk is pretty standard in all American cars and has the same behavior : down for drive and up for reverse. In recent models, the stalk has been replaced with on screen swiping, but on the screen the car is logically facing up. So you swipe up for drive and down for reverse. It makes perfectly sense but this also means that someone with years of habit of driving regular cars might distractedly swipe up for reverse.

    • @sunrisejak2709

I have 3 cars. All have a different function for the right stalk. My Honda has turn signals, My Tesla has gear selector, and my Volvo has wiper controls. Needless to say muscle memory is useless. When I switch between cars it's frustrating. Every time I get in the Volvo I think I'm throwing the car into drive but instead I put the wipers on full blast. Plus with the stalks pretty much hidden it's not abundantly clear at a glance. This lack of an industry standard is bizarre. It is this issue that has me wholly embracing Teslas new "no stalks" approach. Imagine if a car company felt it was somehow beneficial to swap the accelerator pedal and the brake? So why do manufacturers put gear selectors on a stalk that is not readily seen at a glance when histroically the stalks were turn signals/lights or wipers. Move the gear selector to the center console where the majority of cars have put this critical control.

I have an escape glass breaker attached to my driver side door panel (it’s visible and within reach, I don’t have to find it among other things in the side door pocket). I suspect swinging the glass breaker through air before the car is filled with water is quite easy. In fact I doubt the glass breaker would function with enough force if swung through water.

Common glass break tools don't have the same effect on laminated glass (all windshields and luxury side/rear windows) as they do on tempered glass (side/rear windows on common cars). Tempered glass shatters into pea-sized granules while on laminated glass the plastic "glue" between laminated layers keeps the other layer from breaking and holds the broken layer together. Film for window tinting has a similar effect - albeit with a single glass layer.
The primary escape tactic for laminated side glass is to wait until the car fills with water and use Tesla's emergency door latch AFTER the pressure equalizes.

Sad event and I agree that the article is annoying in its anti-Tesla slant. By the way, if anyone is in this situation, you should put the window down and/or open the door and take off your seat belt as soon your car hits the water. If you can't escape immediately and the water starts pressing on the door so that you can't open it (the forces are very high), you should wait for the cabin to fill with water, so that the pressures equalise on either side of the door (I'm sure this is more easily said than done) and then simply open the door (you would use the manual door release in a Tesla) and swim out. Adam Savage demonstrated this on an episode of Mythbusters.

What is specific to the Tesla is the complaint of the car's bad gearbox controls can be accidentally set into reverse. I've seen comments by Tesla drivers saying the reverse drive goes only at a max speed of 3mph but transmission control make getting the Tesla out of reverse difficult to do. Accounts seem to suggest that Angela Chao panicked and was unable to get the car out of reverse quickly enough before her Tesla started sinking into the nearby pond. Some vehicles require more skill to drive than others - Tesla for all its high tech is not for everyone.

This tragedy is actually related to EV cars in general. 1st point is the instant torque available for the EV, which is far greater than the traditional ICE cars. 2nd point is the EV battery location, which is always at the bottom of the car. When a EV went into a pond, it would short the EV battery first, which then cause flow on effect to the ECU (even though the auxiliary battery may still function normally for a few more seconds after the main EV battery in contact with the water). Depending on the design of the ECU, it may shutdown the car, or may cause malfunction of the ECU rendering the door unlocking and window winding system inoperable. In any case, EV is prone to be in more trouble in water than ICE cars. New regulation is required to have a fail-safe system in place for unlocking doors and winding down windows for all modern cars in emergency, particularly when vehicles ended up in water like this tragedy.
Besides, EV are much more heavier than ICE cars…

Did she try to open the door (before or after the phone call) to find a rock, or another obstruction, preventing it from opening enough to escape but enough to allow water in?

I was just commenting on this last night. The loss of any human life is a tragedy, but also a learning experience so others don't perish the same way. I think the reason why some people blame Teslas for bad outcomes, is that Tesla should know better and be better than the competition AND they should. If Tesla is going to be the best and safest, they MUST have programming for egress scenarios. This is such an easy fix. When a vehicle is in a "water landing" situation, it should automatically open all windows and turn on all lights interior and exterior. That is a simple software update. Having egress tools in the driver's zone is also very easy. A seat belt/window tool and a waterproof flashlight should be standard equipment in all vehicles. Use your platform to spread this, DKIA. They won't listen to me, but they might listen to you. May her death not be in vain.

    • @andrasbiro3007

Not that simple. The car can't know how deep or how wide the water is. As we saw many times, you can drive across a small pond in a Tesla without any problem. Opening the windows than could sink the car that would otherwise make it just fine.
Any such emergency measure only activate if someone is trying to open a window. Or maybe if the car doesn't move for a few seconds and the tires don't touch the ground.
A lot of other things can be done to. A 48V motor can roll down the windows even underwater. The Cybertrucks door opening mechanism could overcome the water pressure. An AI in the car could just tell the passengers what to do. It could even be a simple voice recording, but we have a powerful AI in the car anyway, so why not.
And of course the new Roadster may work as a hovercraft too.

The death is tragic, but almost all media now post anything about teslas whether true or not, for the past 10 years of commuting between Vancouver and Abbotsford BC I’ve seen dozens of gas cars on the side of the road burning, I’ve never seen an electric car on the side of the road burning yet in the 10 years, but one Tesla catches on fire in downtown Vancouver it was the first news story on all the local stations, the national stations and even some of the international stations, but I’ve never seen out of those dozens of gas cars on the side of the road the number one story on the news, as you said it’s Clickbait
Also the first thing I do whenever buy a new vehicle ( or drive an unknown one) is read the owners manual on how to get out should the power fail, nobody does that anymore, but me

“Shame” on WSJ? Doc, my revivifier is a skiing expert from Whistler/Blackcomb: my Doc - also a psychologist advises, “psychopaths can’t feel ‘shame’.”

There seems to be a trend at the WSJ on articles attacking Elon Musk.
The reasons may be: 1. An effort for clickbaits since Elon draws views, 2. The fact that X (Twitter) has become a source for news for a lot of people thus a competitor. 3. Or both.
I am a paid subscriber of WSJ and I am very disappointed by this trend at the Journal.

would say that the WSJ isn't the rag we once knew. Today we look at the WSJ, and just see the opposite. Slightly intresting.

There is a lot more to this story. Chris Chappel on China Daily had a TH-cam video on this last week. Apparently the lady is Mitch Mconnels sister in law and there were stories in some Chinese papers out the day before she died saying she was killed in an accident with a truck.

It’s hard to believe that a Harvard graduate needs more than 4 years to figure out how to drive a car…..

Time for Tesla to put stalks back into those cars, or at least offer it as an option. Always thought that was a stupid decision. Yeah it was a freak accident, but her unfamiliarity with the shifter was likely a contributing factor.

3:33 Only a heavily inebriated person could end up in one of these ponds after mistakenly engaging the reverse mode. All others would have had ample time to take their foot off the accelerator and onto the brake pedal.

I crashed a 1969 Mustang with hand crank windows and the police department and fire department had to cut me out with the jaws of life.
All hand crank window Vehicles should be banned

You missed the feature of tesla to automatically open window under water. The car is compromised.

You don’t break glass to get out of Tesla yes you push button to open door but the Tesla have the door handle inside also which you pull and it should open the door.

The vehicle was under underwater. Until the vehicle fills with water, you cannot open the door.

The car filled slowly. She should have opened the door at about 3/4 full. She panicked, we've seen people that can't function in panic

Hopefully these replies will save lives I might be in that circumstance and now thanks to you I know to wait before trying to open door and not panic. Maybe Tesla should have drop down O2 mask like in an airplane. Or I need to get a small cylinder supply of air. Thank you !!!!!!!
