hondaxdood The best thing I liked on this bike is the simplicity of just changing gears from one side and not having to worry about 1 and 2 on the left with a front gear setup. The 11 gears in the rear are so closely packed and the gearing is perfect for hills especially 1 and 2. The lower gear size is so big that I could tackle any hill without putting a foot down. For me that has been the biggest benefit. The 11 gears in the rear cover all inclines and flats you would encounter on the street.

@@Jamesthebikeguy Most Suntour forks (used to) have a 3 or 5 cm wide plastic placeholder, that can be removed by 2 screws on the backside to make place for a headlight holder that matches the fork seamlessly (Busch & Muller makes them particularly for Suntour and Rock Shox forks). I suggest you have a look at any dual sport 'equipped' version and you'll know what I mean. Perhaps it is different in the States, but over here in Belgium (and as far as I know the rest of Europe) that's how it's done.

Hi, I need some advice. I can buy a trek duals sport 4 2019 model from a neighbor for 600 euro’s. He almost did not ride it, looks brand new, without any scratch. Do you think it’s a good price for it? Is the 2019 model still good in 2022 or is it already oldschool. 😉👍 thanks
I'm a roady. Is 1X really an upgrade ? I still prefer a 2X11 How does having a front derailleur make things complicated ? I personally think a 1X is a downgrade.
Believe it or not, the front derailleur is one of the most questioned things on a new bike, and often never used. Many people would benefit from a 1x drive train.
i use a 1x on my road bike, 40t and 11-28.. it came w a compact crank, 50,34... i found the 34 too small and the 50 too large, the 40t is perfect and has a max speed of about 42 kph which i rarely do on my own power since i like coasting downhill, only thing i would change is to get a 12-28 cassette
I was thinking about this long long time too. I drive on road too but also in hills and woods ... I was also thinking about gravel bikes .. but a hybrid bike (cross bike) and 42ts is the best solution for me - I hope :-)
Interesting that if you look at the Trek's website pics for this model, the frame looks different. Specifically the head tube angle...their pic makes it look more like a Marlin.
Apurva Agnihotri I’ve changed the tires to the Specialized Sawtooth tires for road riding and have ridden up to 66 miles on it. It rides great smooth and fast. Some people were really surprised how fast the bike is and how well it performed. I have a 2019 model with 2x10
Love my hybrid FX 6! I was looking at the Marlin 7 for gravel/hard pack riding. How does this Dual Sport 4 compare to the Marlin for what I want to use it for? Thanks so much - LOVE your channel :)
I have the same question! I have a Marlin 6 on order, but wondering if this would fit the bill better. Want to have more ruggedness and light trail/gravel capability but keep road capabilty to use as a fitness bike. Would a DS4 or Marlin be a better all-arounder?
The Marlin and the Dual Sport are very close. Think of it more like choosing SUVs. The Marlin is more like a Jeep Grand Cherokee where its a road car with good off road capability. The Dual Sport is more like a Toyota Highlander, very good road car, with decent capability. The same person could choose either and be happy. More or less just slightly different flavors
Jamesthebikeguy thanks that’s a good analogy. For me, the DS makes sense to have 1 bike to do it all. On the other hand, getting the Marlin could leave room for a drop bar road bike further down the line... heh nice to dream!
Great presentation. I miss my DS 8.5 2012 model. That was solid as a tank and looked great. This grey model looks close in appearance but so does the cheaper 2021 DS3.
Hi, Thank you for video. I need help in deciding on a bike. I am looking at riding on the weekends for exercise purpose and staying active. I will be riding on the bike paths close to home (most are cemented, paved) and may be eventually on roads. Would like to see myself riding 20 to 30 kms on a day. Would be nice to have the option to ride on gravel and a bit offroad on grass lands and easy trails, not to serous. Just for a bit of fun. Last time I bought a Merida D40 road bike which I wasn't a huge fan of and ended up selling it in a couple of months. Didn't quite like the way it changed gears as it kept playing up. Also the tyres were not wide enough so I was losing confidence rising on fast speed on the paved bike tracks specially around the the tight corners. I realised it would be nice to have front suspension. Hence I ended up finalising 2 bikes, Merlin 7 and Dual Sport 3 both 2021. I am in Australia and we don't have the DS4 as yet. I like the shape of Marlin 7, It also has a nice upgraded DR system making it 1/10. Really nice broad front and looks solid. Not sure how it would be for travelling 20 to 30 kms ride on road or paved paths which is what I aiming to do in a day. On the other hand DS3 ticks the boxes from fitness prospective, long distance travel due to thinner tyres and sill has a front suspension. Also a slight upright posture. It does not have the DR 1/10 which is only available in DS4 and we don't have it here in Aus. Your thoughts and input will be really appreciated. Cheers
Since you have tested quite a few trek bikes; which one do you recommend for riding on a bike trail which is 50 miles? The entire trail is paved. thanks
I was told by a bike retailer that this bike and the fx3 are not for gravel trails. I'm looking at upgrading from my 15 year old Trek mountain bike to a hybrid and have been interested in the fx3 or a dual sport 3. But not sure they can handle gravel. The trail is not super rough. It's small stones/sandy.
Thank you for replying! Yeah it left me confused as the Trek website says the dual sport is for all types of terrain. I am not sure about the Fx3 though. It says "anywhere, anytime fitness bike" on the Trek Australia website. Do you know if the fx3 can handle gravel?
@@MarsK84 i just picked up a 2022 fx3. We've got some rough paved trails and small gravel trails around me, and I'm experiencing quite a bit of sliding on the small gravel, and my arms are getting shook up (major vibration) by the rough paved trail since there is a lack of suspension. I'm going to go pick up a 2021 ds4 this weekend to see if both the default tires and the inclusion of shock absorption is the perfect solution to what's around me. When i'm on a clean paved road, the fx3 is great. I'm hoping i will not feel much of the added weight/loss of speed with the DS4; crossing my fingers and i'll report back
Very cool! Reminds me of the Cannondale Bad Boy I used to have. I ride an FX Sport 6, a Carbon Fiber fitness Bike as you mentioned in your video! Great job! The Dual Sport 4 seems a bit heavy but very useful! 😎👍🚴♀️🇺🇸❤️
what ever forks you want to put on it has to be a 1/18 fit, its the only downside to this bike and its a big one as you cant put modern tapered forks on unless you use a converter
Wow, if Trek had put on the NRX air shock rather than the coil, or either a Rockshox Paragon, it might have weighed 1-2 pounds less than that. But am a bit confused, Trek's site shows it weighs 27.5lbs for the medium size.
Yeah that's a good question. Normally bikes weight more than claimed but this one seems to be a ringer. I was quite impressed with it's weight and how it felt.
Got my DS4 a few days ago, and have been doing some steep climbs on this. Here is my take: For downhill and normal roads this bike does very very well. Very good speeds. However for climbing gradients, DS4 SUCKS big time. It's a big big disappointment when it comes to climbing. My analysis is this probably due to the gears which are spaced at 3 tooth intervals. My suggestion: If you need a dual sport, then save your money and go for the 2x9 Dual Sport 3 version instead.
Nice looking bike, looks like it would be good for casual riding. I’m thinking about selling my Verve 3 & getting one of these. Verve 3 is heavy & very stiff, you feel every bump in the road, this looks much better, nice review!
I am stuck between this bike and the specialized sirrus x 4.0. I feel like I'd be on the road more than trails but I am also riding in a city that's got some pretty bumpy areas. not sure if the suspension is worth it on the trek over the future shock on the specialized. Tough decisions.
@@cecypinzana7302 I ordered the sirrus x 4.0, it's not going to be available until February. I chose that over the trek aftery test riding a couple different models. I found the treks front suspension to be heavy and clunky.

would a Verve 3 be noticeably more comfortable than this? Currently have a Marlin 7, but looking to get something more comfortable / pavement friendly in the future so I was debating on the Dual-Sport or the Verve
More comfortable is subjective, but it would be a much more upright position.
I have a 7 year old trek flat bar. I'm tempted to upgrade looks great
It would be a sweet upgrade
If you live where its flat its a good idea to change the front to 46 or 52 tooth chain ring.
@Joe Kinchicken I have one on my gravel bike and really like it after i changing the front chain ring. Its flat here so the 1x is better for me.
Can i buy the upgrades of ds4 to my ds1?
How’s the performance on uphill climb?
Where can I buy this?
I have an older version of the DS4 and love it. Will not hesitate to get a newer version some day.
This looks awesome. Im currently waiting on parts to be stocked to set up a sram X01 1x12 on my fxs4. I use it for single track training, at least for the time being until I get the farley 9.6 I ordered(which is now pushed back until March :/ )
What it the diameter of the fork?
Easy to use and clean. Very convenient.
I can no longer spot a headlight adapter on the Suntour fork. Damn shame
Hmmm
@@Jamesthebikeguy Most Suntour forks (used to) have a 3 or 5 cm wide plastic placeholder, that can be removed by 2 screws on the backside to make place for a headlight holder that matches the fork seamlessly (Busch & Muller makes them particularly for Suntour and Rock Shox forks). I suggest you have a look at any dual sport 'equipped' version and you'll know what I mean. Perhaps it is different in the States, but over here in Belgium (and as far as I know the rest of Europe) that's how it's done.
Thanks for the video
I think I’ll preorder this bike
By the way is it much better than the marlin 7 for roads and sidewalks?
Yeah. DS is much better than marlin.
I bought my trek marlin 6 four years ago. I rode marlin 6 use on sidewalk and path every. It’s not fit for me. I bought my trek DS 2 one year ago. It is much better because easy to commute and on road or sidewalk.
Cristhian Medrano thanks for the information 😊
I bought the marlin 7 4 years ago also
I really didn’t like it that much
And it’s too heavy for daily use
I preordered the Dual Sport 4 a few days ago and I was afraid it will be heavy like the marlin but after your reply i’m glad I preordered it
Thanks for your reply my friend 😊
@@MrScorpion83 I’ve been riding the bike for more than 3 weeks so far so good marlis are like 60/40 more on a mountain biking ds is 50/50 on road and light trail and i love the 1x drivetrain its less complicated the bike only weights around 12kg
What size of tyre could you put on this? I know it's 700x40c at the moment, but could you go above that when, as suggested, you put on tubeless ones. Thanks
You can use up to 29" x 2.1" mountain bike tires
Nice video, hope to receive mine this week 🤞
Hope you enjoy it!
Great Video and Great Channel, James. I´m going (hope so) to the US on december and planning to buy a new bike there... The Specialized Sirrus X 5.0 is my first option. What do you think about that bike? Greetings from Brazil! regards!
I have the ds4 2018 bike,can I put 100mm suspension on it? I want more travel than 63mm I have on it
Hi, I need some advice. I can buy a trek duals sport 4 2019 model from a neighbor for 600 euro’s. He almost did not ride it, looks brand new, without any scratch. Do you think it’s a good price for it? Is the 2019 model still good in 2022 or is it already oldschool. 😉👍 thanks
Just picked up a x caliber 8 2019
Congrats!
Does it have rapid shift
Thank you sir for the great review unfortunately I have to wait for more than 3 months for this bike.
I'm a roady.
Is 1X really an upgrade ?
I still prefer a 2X11
How does having a front derailleur make things complicated ?
I personally think a 1X is a downgrade.
Believe it or not, the front derailleur is one of the most questioned things on a new bike, and often never used. Many people would benefit from a 1x drive train.
i use a 1x on my road bike, 40t and 11-28.. it came w a compact crank, 50,34... i found the 34 too small and the 50 too large, the 40t is perfect and has a max speed of about 42 kph which i rarely do on my own power since i like coasting downhill, only thing i would change is to get a 12-28 cassette
1x is great if you have a dropper and/or remote lockout.
I was thinking about this long long time too. I drive on road too but also in hills and woods ... I was also thinking about gravel bikes .. but a hybrid bike (cross bike) and 42ts is the best solution for me - I hope :-)
will you please start stating the msrp ?? is that possible ?? thanks
No. Prices vary based on location and timing. However most of my videos link to my local bike shop if you want to see the item or price.
If you can watch videos on YT, you can go to Trek’s webpage and see MSR and all the specifications not mentioned in said video
Interesting that if you look at the Trek's website pics for this model, the frame looks different. Specifically the head tube angle...their pic makes it look more like a Marlin.
Well if video adds 10-lbs to a person, maybe it changes headtube angles on a bike?
@@Jamesthebikeguy lol maybe!
Awsmmmmm review sir... how’s the on road comfort and can we do really long rides on this bike around 70 to 100 kms?? Thanks in advance
For distances that long on pavement I would be looking at the FX or maybe even a road bike?
Jamesthebikeguy cool thanks a ton 🙌
@@Jamesthebikeguy Thank you! Really appreciate that. Think I'll go with the Marlin for more grip on the dirt :)
Great presentation. I miss my DS 8.5 2012 model. That was solid as a tank and looked great. This grey model looks close in appearance but so does the cheaper 2021 DS3.
Hi,
Thank you for video.
The entire trail is paved. thanks
Paved trail? :)
@@angervision yes it is our county bike trail. It is paved and it is 26 one way miles from north to south
That's weird, the dual sport is for exactly that light dirt trails gravel trails and pavement
Hi, why did you switch to FX from the Bad Boy?
Well, the FX series is lighter and I find the FX series to be more comfortable for me.
Would roxkshox judy 100mm be a bad idea putting on this bike?
what ever forks you want to put on it has to be a 1/18 fit, its the only downside to this bike and its a big one as you cant put modern tapered forks on unless you use a converter
Think im going to pre order this bike was looking at gravel bikes but don't fancy drop bars and this looks ideal for what I need on my local trails
Awesome!
Here is my take:
For downhill and normal roads this bike does very very well.
Thanks and have fun when you get it
Does the dual sport shifter tell you what speed your in
No
Can you add a dropper post?
An externally routed one sure.
which innertube valve length do these rims need?
48mm
Excellent review! I'm considering buying me this one soon.
Great review, thank you!
I am stuck between this bike and the specialized sirrus x 4.0. I feel like I'd be on the road more than trails but I am also riding in a city that's got some pretty bumpy areas. not sure if the suspension is worth it on the trek over the future shock on the specialized. Tough decisions.
Keith, I'm in the same situation. Please let me know about your final decision.
@@cecypinzana7302 I ordered the sirrus x 4.0, it's not going to be available until February. I chose that over the trek aftery test riding a couple different models. I found the treks front suspension to be heavy and clunky.
Hi james amazing content and in love with the details provided ! Pls advise if this is suitable for heavy riders ? I weigh 115 kg and have been looking for a hybrid . Or should i stick to a wider tyre ?
The fx4 2021 with the Carbon fork is sold for 135 kg, bike included, and Trek keeps a lot of safety margin. So yes, this bike should be perfect for you
When are the 2022s out?
Long time from now. Usually September or so
@@Jamesthebikeguy yepper, but if you order a bike now, it may come to you by September! I should just get in line for a 2022. Bike manufacturing is so lame right now.
tubeless is impractical for the typical user of this bike imo.. better to get puncture resistant tyre
I suppose so, but I think someone riding 1-2 times per week would be quite happy with the TLR benefits.
Just Picked Up My Brand New 2021 Trek Duel Sport 4 From The Trek Bicycle Store Gahanna, Ohio 9/16/2020! My Other Mountain Bike Is A Trek Fuel EX8 Full Suspension 2011! 🚵♂️❤️
Please do a 2020 diverge e5 base.
Videoing one next week!
Looking forward for that review. My local shop has a Diverge e5 Evo flat bar in stock.
What’s the going price on this model & TREK requires for all dealers to sell at same price?
They have a minimum advertised price, but a dealer is free to sell them for whatever they want. Granted the average US bike dealer makes 6% on a bike after the costs to ship, build, service, overhead so you will rarely see stores just discounting anymore.
It looks like there is no DS 4 model for 2022, and no more 2021 models available. Does anybody know if they are considering a DS 4 for 2023. I wonder why they ash canned the DS 4, it seemed to be a hot seller.
Curious why DS4 has a larger stem than DS 2?
Larger?
Yes. Specs show 80mm for DS 2 and 100mm for DS 4.
Great review! Always wondering: can you bunny hop on and off curb, or doing wheelie on a hybrid such as this dual sport? Are they rugged enough?
Good question - I would like to know the answer to this as well.
Yes to both.
Can you still have fun with this bike as far as jumping curbs and riding on stairs and stuff?
Stairs is likely not the best choice, but curbs no problem
Very helpful video keep uploading new videos on new bikes.thanks
Thank you, I will
I put deposit down on one a month ago. They told me B4 Jan.4, 2021. A week ago Friday I got a text from the dealer with a bike-tracker link saying expected delivery “late August “. That text was sent on 8/29. Stopped by the dealer this elk and they don’t know anything. Makes me wonder if a serial number of my bike is assigned to the order...such a hot commodity I wouldn’t want them selling (or taking) mine and reordering another for me.
