It's quite useful to know what a galaxy was doing millions of years ago when the light gets here. It's so critical to know these things when I am planning when to take my recycling to the depot.
It is so reassuring knowing tax dollars are being spent on things that really matter.
Like what galaxies were doing millions of years ago. How did we do without this information for so long?

Maybe you should consider living in a forest or at the very least stop using all technologies that make your life sutainabale and comfortable because every machine at every stage required princiapls of fundamental sciences.
If Einstein didnt think about General Relativity you wouldnt have had GPS and I could cite million reasons justifying abstract scientific pursuits.
If we spend whole lot of money on theoretical sciences when there are so many world problems your comment may make some sense but currently in US we spend less than 1% of GDP on research (if we talk strictly of theortical thats even lesser) and you think thats wasted money?
Media, Politicians and so many more useless and harmful aspects of society account for 20-30% GDP , maybe you can direct your anger towraeds that.
