I like how Osmo keeps improving thru updates. I watched the gopro 7 vs osmo and you mentioned that the flat profile might be a tad better on the Hero 7. Osmo updated their software and made the colors flat but now you prefer the Hero8 with saturated colors. With this I can say that it really goes down to personal preference. I see the front screen useful so I am going with the Osmo. Thanks a lot for the complete review! Helped me a lot on my buying decision 👍
Thanks for this video. I think in low light the DJI Osmo Action was a clear winner. The leather on those chairs looked awesome. Definitely wouldn't mind using it for online serviceability, since grain usually only shows up on larger image portrayal or big screens. I had a GoPro 5, two 6's, and two 7's and ALL of them had lock ups, shut off, auto start up on their own, failed to record, and with each one of them, I lost at least 1 valuable video. The DJI OSMO ACTION . . I have yet to lose even one video.
Both these units are terrific. I agree with you that it comes down to personal preference. I currently use both the hero 7 and the osmo pocket. The fisheye in the hero 7 sucks which now the hero 8 can shoot 4k in linear mode, so that gripe is improved. The hero 8 fixed lens is problematic but then again the os pocket lens is also fixed, so I'm used to being careful with the lens, although the os pocket is far from an action cam. Kinda leaning towards the osmo action but I could easily make either of these two cams work well for me. These are just two very nice cameras, that which ever one you choose to go with should be a very doable choice.
The best review, answers almost the questions when it comes to the action cam I like the comparison test too it really proves the quality of the products. Thank so much.
all you have to do on OSMO clips are increase the saturation and contrast. but let's talk about screen size, replaceable lens, lens attachments, battery,
I'm surprised the GoPro 8 image looked good out of box. The DJI would suit those into post editing and color grading. DJI could also change the lens cover with ND filters. Good practical review and comparison. Very helpful and stay honest 👍
I bought the Hero8 today and will be taking it back tomorrow to switch out for the DJI Action. GoPro support is severely lacking and they stated that the 8 doesn't support file transfer to any PC's with lower than an i7 processor (which is insane). There's also no way to charge while recording without exposing the entire battery bay and no way to replace the lens from damage. Picking up the Osmo Action today and looking forward to supporting someone that has the potential to finally take down GoPro.
6:19 lol, you can't please everybody, i remember when the 7 came out, everybody was criticizing the new surface material on the 7, saying how they liked the 6 better.
Osmo was down to $199 with spare battery on Amazon, so I went with that 2 weeks ago. I do really like the front screen, easy lens removal, and flat D-Cine mode for color grading. Dynamic range, volume, and stabilization isn't as good, but close and I can live with those compromises.
The DJI wins it for me. Even if they were the same price, especially when i read the comments about the GoPro's freezing. If this is their first entry into the action cam market to compete with Gopro, it will be exciting to see what comes next! Thanks for the comparison video :)
@@tsole1783 I also bought a gopro like 2-3 years ago and same also happened to me. Overheated and battery issue. Just a normal defect the majority, maybe or some.
Great comparison. I’m sticking with my Osmo. The whole battery door and non removable lens cover turned me away from the 8. I will be jealous of the the night time-lapse though.
Hi there...I'm trying to choose between Hero 8 and Osmo...I know the Osmo has a video timelapse function...it can make a timelapse at night correct? the hero 8 just introduced Night time lapse...is it better? Thanks
Awesome thanks for this review!! The Osmo is like Hero7 upgraded. For the price, features and design, Osmo for the win. I'm just using the DJI for stills and underwater videos during my holidays. The dual cameras is a bonus feature for selfie shots.
Thanks Ben, this was a superb review that very clearly shows the features of both cameras which is important because I am considering upgrading from my old Akaso which works fine for a budget action cam but...you know the saying...you get what you pay for. :) Thanks again for the honest information.
I don’t own either. Just at the research stage. But I gotta say that the image quality of the Osmo isn’t even in the same ballpark as the GoPro. Only 2 minutes in, watching on my iPhone and it’s almost embarrassing how much better the GoPro is. Worth the $70 extra IMO.
For me it's obvious that the GoPro Hero 8 is times better in every example. Everything is clearley better: picture quality, detail, stabilization and sound.
In every material in this video you can see the picture difference in favor of Gopro. There are more details on Gopro. I also had the opportunity to test both cameras (Gopro 7 black and Osmo action) and it is confirmed. With Osmo Action, the image is out of focus and not very detailed. There are no sharpness settings in Osmo Action, but it would not help, the blur is too big - especially in worse lighting. The biggest disadvantages of Gopro 8 are physical disadvantages - Slippery plastic, non-detachable lens, small screen.
Thank you so much for making these videos. It saves our time on doing all this online research and everything. The way you use and compare videos together is just great. Thank you again.
The Osmo footage look so white compared to 8. Fixable after editing but still....but it’s only like 270 now with the new pricing. Front screen really get me...Probably Osmo Action for me.

It says, "But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy and where thieves do not break in and steal." PRAISE THE LORD 🙂
The Colour quality on the Gopro definitely looks much better, however, I was not expecting the DJI to out run the Gopro on the image stabilisation front given that it is better than the Sony age old competitors. It is a tough choice but after all I think it has all to do with the affordability of the buyer. For a cheaper price tag you are going for some pretty washed up colours. But with the additional premium for the Gopro, I would still debate if it is worth it. Worth checking out the Virb 30. Age old device!
This was very thorough! I only wish the Osmo had stabilization at 240 FPS, which would have made it a clear winner for me. I wonder whether firmware updates could add this feature, or if that’s hardware dependent. Anyone know?

GoPro always has bad audio in the wind! I’m upgrading to the Hero 8 because of the media mod, which should allow me to plug in an external mic with a dead cat
Team Osmo! Because for vlogging, having a front screen is a HUGE plus. The GP is expensive and if u add the front screen on the top, it will become as big as a point and shoot camera. Great review. Merci beaucoup.
Skin tones and color are easily controllable if you select manual WB according to the scene... It also beats the gopro with front screen, the interface, the lens filter and with the rocksteady in 4k at 50/60p
I sure wish the colors of the Osmo were warmer and less purple. It's always a bit overexposed as well. Is it possible to tweak these in camera? If they are, I'll go Osmo.
Very helpful review. One thing you missed: on Gopro there is a bigger fish eye effect. On Osmo the horizon isn't that bend. May the field of view and wide angle are not the same?
I choose the DJI Osmo Action for the two displays, and replaceable filter for which I have variable NDs 2-5, 6-9, and a 10 stop for long exposure then a UV-IR Filter and Clear Night filter. Getting the Insta 360 One R Trio pack next (Dual, 4K, and 1 Inch) sensor.
