It’s actually crazy how much Gildarts’ design is just Shanks, even down to the 3 scars on his left eye. For a second I thought this was a One Piece reaction and I was like, 72-76?

It's basically just Shanks, but he used cosmetic to hide the three claw mark scar and he used Aizen's pomade to slick back his hair.

@@AditBasu Oh, it’s been a long ass time since I’ve actually watched Fairy Tail, I knew something was off because I didn’t remember his design being so shameless.
They don't joke this time though. He's basically the most powerful Wizard of Fairytail alive. (Even comparable to the Master himself).

Gildarts spends much time with Natsu than Shanks does with Luffy from what I've heard.
From what I've head Gildarts had been hyped up alot in the manga but those parts were cut as the people worked on the anime were unsure if it was going to last long enough to get to his introduction.
It's actually quite impressive how Wells guesses things up close. He's really smart👏

Oh, so this is the story of Shanks before he got his scars.
You know Oda did Shanks dirty when he had to get a part time job in Fairy Tail just so he could afford his rent.
Complain about filler while skipping the best filler episodes. Seriously the one off episodes are some of the best ones in the series. And for clarification they mentioned the S class wizards were the strongest but didn't specify/confirm who was the strongest. And to be fair Guildarts was mentioned in the manga twice before this.
I believe one them was in the fight between Laxus and Msytogan
In all seriousness, how in the blithering frick did this character design get approved by the editors/publishers?
There are many protagonists that look like other protagonists, I don’t think the Shanks and Gildarts looking alike is that insane
I don't think they had problems with it tho. Cause the only moment he got character design changed is the change of animator.

But other factors like losing an arm and being a father figure to the protagonist are still there

Just fyi, the mangaka for Fairy Tail - Hiro Mashima, used to work on One Piece as an assistant to Oda and he owes him a lot. Gildarts is essentially Mashima paying homage to Oda through his resemblance to Shanks.
ah that was just a rumor. Mashima actually never worked as an assistant. He got his position from a contest. Also if he was he probably wouldn't be working at Jump's competitor.

They did start their careers around the same time.
Fun fact:Anime Gildarts is the only one who holds resemblance to Shanks.The Lost Arm and Leg come from Guts from berserk as the creator said.But I can see the inspiration as the uncle figure to the mc.I just had to bring this up cause a lot of ppl will say the creator of fairy tail just straight up ripped off when the anime quite literally changed stuff about his original work.(Gildarts also had a daughter who he didn’t raise first)
