This has been the missing piece of the puzzle in my life. Graduated top of my LE class of 33, got engaged right after to my now wife and failed field training. Got released with another agency not long after, but have struggled ever since with finding the warrior spirit again. Hearing DJ talk about focus and "the dial" especially was the clarity I'd been missing. Thank you, Sir!
You knew what you married for, love. If you want them home and genuinely love them, let them know and let them go. Knowing that you have to be a mother/father, friend, and fixer would be best. You have to be independent and have the ability to feel nothing comfortably at home while they are away. Knowing your man is a good, loyal person to you, but his brothers come first. Love conquers all. I'm not being naive. Keep your body for the one. Otherwise, there is no trust and no fun. It can be done x
The amount of accountability DJ has is insane. About to hit 10 years in September and just working on the accountability piece with myself. That breakdown of switches and dials will be effective. Appreciate the advice.
Much love and respect for you brothers. Deployments are never easy. I did 26 years as an enlisted on the Naval aviation side of the house. You’re in a perpetual state of workups, detachments and deployments so true what he said about officers coming in and trying to change things up just for their own fitness report. Navy always has had a bad habit of knee-jerk reactions to events.
Personally being a vet the last thing i would want on tour is a phone call home . I just think you dont need that weight whilst your trying to do your job . It just gives you more to worry about , when you need to concentrate on the job at hand .
Signing up for the navy in the next couple of weeks, hoping to get into SWCC.. big dreams and aspirations and although i won’t be a seal, i hope to half the operator DJ is in the accountability aspect.
He is right on point, when he stated that it makes life easier to just stay away. To not have to think about what's going on back at home. 2/75 1991-1996 RLTW.
I was not Special Forces. Instead I decided to get an option 40 contract and go the Ranger route. That was in 1991. 21 years later I retired. Unfortunately, I retired and hardly knew my daughters or my, then, wife. I don't regret my career choice or my deployment.I do regret losing the time that I can't get back, with my daughters. If you want that Green Beret. Then put 100% into everything you do. And give a shit about everything that you do. And never give up. Never ever give up! You can do it kid. If you really want it!
It’s a realistic take. To function in certain condition requires putting things away, which is sometimes detrimental to the individual and those around them. Where people encounter dramas is when they retain this approach when there’s an opportunity to unburden or whatever. It’s easier said than done.
Must be frustrating integrating back into society from working with, and being surrounded by, such incredibly high achievers. Must be quite an adjustment.
I purposely rarely called home or emailed. It makes it way worse. You must focus on the mission and giving everything, while remembering your “why” but keeping them at a distant.
The rules and just straight nonsense that exist in the regular Army Infantry is exactly why I'm getting out when my contract ends. toxic leadership just ruins things.
Married guys had so many more distractions, worries, and made life hell at times if they were in leadership positions because they didn't wanna go home. If you are young and want to join the military, do not get married!!!
I hope you feel better after you vent big guy. Sounds like you could talk to your kids on deployment. Not to take anything away from your experience, but it sounds like a blessing to me. Sounds like you didn't get drafted at 18 and sent to the Ia drang valley as a member of the ASA attached to airmobile like my dad. Were you in firefights every night? Combat 270 days a year for 4 years? You were able to talk to your family? You know your kids? What do you know about agent orange. You had night vision? Did the NVA skin your dog? How many people did you kill with a hatchet? Did you get denied VA benfits for 30 years since you got sent to cambodia? Do you still cry yourself to sleep at the age of 79? Nice flag... Youre a dual red coat citizen? What all countries other than America do you serve? Ever think about serving your own people?
