      @kayelle8005 4 ปีที่แล้ว +15

      heartsofgoldenrod yes. Love this observation. In visual art constraint is understood and respected as a deliberate artistic choice, and I don’t understand why people are viewing it as a negative with her singing.

    • @MetalliBucket

      Kerryn Simmons I believe its cause it can be construed as lazy singing. Like Sam points out, it isn’t easy to do what she does, BUT it’s more difficult to be more dynamic and sing louder and with more range

    • @Jhakaro
      @Jhakaro 4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@kayelle8005 Yes but in art it could be seen as the equivalent of a poor artist that can ONLY do one thing, one view of a head, the one pose, the same few colours, can only create abstract art etc. In such a case it is not a choice. There's no choice if it's the only thing you can do. That's a limitation. Any good artist will tell you that you should learn the fundamentals first and THEN you can pick and choose what styles or things you prefer to draw, paint etc. Far too many artists never learn to properly paint or draw, have no real understanding of anatomy, perspective, colour theory, light and shadow etc. and they go straight into abstract art or similar and make out it's a choice or their anatomy is way off and they call it a style. It's only a style if you deliberately make those choices, knowing how to do it correctly first.

    • @kayelle8005
      @kayelle8005 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Jhakaro Yes. Great points. I agree with you. I don't know if Billie is making a choice or not. Just because we've predominantly seen one aspect so far does not mean she isn't making a deliberate choice and does actually know the fundamentals, but it could well be that this is her starting point and her knowledge or skill level is not allowing a variation. Time will tell. I see a similar thing with the athletes that I've coached. Some are naturally talented and can get a fair degree of success, even elite success, without knowing or applying really good foundational generic movement and sport specific technique. That said, they all improve their performance once they do take the time and effort to understand and learn technique.

    This video literally took me more than half an hour cause English isn’t my first language and I only learn it in school, so I had to look up like 3 words a sentence😂
    But I kept watching it because this is the first video of a vocal coach reacting to Billie in which the vocal coach really seems to be one and definitely knows what he’s talking about.
    If I watch videos of Billie singing sth, I usually just listen and enjoy it, but this was really very interesting to see. Thank you for it!

He's good at explaining things, of course, it's just not my area. I just enjoy listening to Sam talk about music, I don't really have any interest in musical theory beyond that so some of what he says goes a bit over my head - in terms of the subject matter, not the actual language itself.

    I don't think she will go for that path, but she could expand her vocal range, add much more tecniches, learn music theory.

      @@killerqueen9385 same. I love how she had her own unique style while also drawing inspiration from the great soul singers of the 60's/Motown era (I'm a huge Motown fan). Truly among the most gifted female performers of the past decade, in my opinion; add to that the brilliant production and arrangements of Mark Ronson. Wish we could see what she'd be up to today :/

    Love your analyses! Love it when you use your own voice and how you belted out the D-I-E like you were trying to kill someone. LOL Sorry, no insult, I loved it, you have a great voice, amazing range! Also love Billie's & Finneas' performance here, they are both so talented. I have to admit that I'm a bit addicted to this song already. It just grabs you & doesn't let you go.

    I don't understand why some people think that in order to "sing" you have to reach high notes.
    It's not a rule, it's just an idea we have in our heads. If the roles were reversed, we would say "you don't have to shout".

    I love how you explain her voice. Much like Billie, I’ve always had a more breathy voice and our ranges are very much the same, including riding along the line of flipping vs not. I used to find it frustrating that I couldn’t sing a lot of the mainstream pop songs with the same type of sound/power.... and then here comes Billie. But how you’ve explained her voice and technique has helped me improve mine!! Thank you 🤗

    Personally I love when you hear her flip into different voices or colours because she transitions them well or it just seems expressively appropriate. When she come back down in 'never see ME CRY'. I just love that shift so much. It would be boring otherwise. It's a stylistic thing like Sia's voice cracks abd so rt of reflects the duality being sung about. Being in love, being angry at being deceived, the two faces of this lover who turned on her, the mixed emotions. It works.

    Not a fan of hers in general but I like the song and I think it's cause her soft spoken singing fit well with that bond theme which was pretty slick.
    From a critical perspective I'd say it's impressive that it sounded so similar to the studio recording, but I think as far as talent it really shows the control she has. Anneke Van Giersbergen has one of my favorite female singing voices and every now and then I can slightly hear a hint of Billie being able to sing like her but a little 'deeper'. If I listen to the two back to back the difference in vocal reach is a lot more evident but Anneke just naturally has one of those soft but projecting voices.
