Conoid chair, designed and built by George Nakashima in 1969, is the one of the most renowned woodworks in 20 century with its unique design. Influenced by Shaker, his work has the beauty of simplicity with elegance.
Different from the original version, slight design changes are done in my work. The original one was designed as a dining chair and the leg angle is increased for comfortability and the head width was decreased with the personal preference. The front angle of the legs is cut with bandsaw instead of table saw and it does not reach to the foot, which might make the support sturdier. The seat is carved a little bit deeper with a more rounded shape. The spindles are made of hard maple, while hickory was used in the original. Spindles became thicker than I thought, which I don't like much after all. The combination of tung and linseed oil along with polyurethane varnish is used, when the nominal 5 times of tung oil finish is applied to the original chair.
The reference was the book by Nakashima, The Soul of a Tree, and various information on internet was helpful.

Awesome job! Your video inspires me to make a Conoid chair to go with a Nakashima inspired Frenchman's Cove dining table.

Enjoyed the topic, but I can't continue watching with the camera so close to your plane.

That means you are in need of entertainment not knowledge or instructions. Nothing wrong with that.

Hi. Very nice video. I'm currently figuring out the measures to build my own. I'm having troubles with the legs width and depth. You say in the video that width is 2'' but I have no idea about the depth. I saw somewhere that it is 2 1/2'' but it seems less. Could you share the leg's measures. And I'm also lost with the foot length. I think 22'' but I'm not sure. Could you give a hand with that?

Thank you for the detailed video! Your chair looks amazing. I was wondering if you wouldn't mind sharing the angles, I cant quite make out what they are in the video specifically for the legs relative to the feet and the seat relative to the legs

It depends. Conoid chair is originally for dining and it is reasonable that people who tried this chair say that the angle between the feet and leg is 81 degree. However, I wanted it to be more comfortable and made the angle to be 75 degree. In the sketch from the book, the soul of the tree, Nakashima's pen-drawn sketch says it to be also about 75 degree, even if I could not figure out the angle from the other pictures in the book. The angle between leg and seat is 101 degree and the seat's angle is 4 degree from the floor after all. Thanks!

@@woodwise6120 perfect thank you. I also read in other sources about the 81* or 9* relative to square but I like the look of your 15* offset better. I appreciate your response

@@jonlazza1 A lot of the repros I have seen are far too upright. It can't be based off a typical dining chair, because the single upright has to both be somewhat central in the ski, and then move to the back of seat, and it also forms the back of the chair upright. That means the chair back is angled back, that means the seat has to lift up or the sitter would slide off it. Altogether it is half way between a dining chair and an easy chair.
This raises an interesting point for the home builder, do you really want to make 4, 6, or 8 of these things when they are not really fabulous as dining chairs, and you could make a Conoid Nakashima lounge chair that is similar, but looks better, and is actually fit to purpose.

Prepare the stock with hand planes....it's great exercise and you get a ton of camp fire starter as a by-product. -Veteran '66-68

You can get plans/templates here:www.mmwoodstudio.com/online-classes/inspired-chair/ but you have to sign up for his yearly thing first. I did that and found the extra information helpful. I made a set bar stool height...but if YOU do, you must have an kitchen island that will accommodate a foot rail or your feet will just dangle ...This was a fun project, way over my head skill wise....except now, it's not. My current project is a cantilevered coffee table, 'inspired' by G. Nakamura. In Koa. No, I'm not sayin where I live. -Veteran '66-68
