Truly beautiful. Thanks for sharing. I saw the seat is 16”. How tall is the back? And what is the rake angle of the largest two spindles?

at George's shop they call these knock-off-a-shima's.. once i have some more hand tools and the bare minimum machines i must try similar style/inspired furniture, for now i'm mostly only sculpting but i'm eager to try more functional things..
nice work, i subbed to see more of it! cheers

Thanks! One of my repeat clients has nick named me Don Yakashima. Enjoy your woodworking journey. Reproducing all these Nakashima designs has been a masterclass in fine woodworking.I think you will enjoy figuring it out.

i can imagine there are many details to consider with these designs, the traditionally japanese joints on those double conoid tables feel 5+ years of learning away to me.. (i guess that's where Nakashima got them from as they look similar to japanese old houses and shrines etc)
anyhow, have a good one giving trees a second life!@@donyacovella1230

Yeah I know a hand rubbed finish looks better I agree. My clients appreciate the durability so they can just use it and not stress out over rings and scratches. Thanks for watching!

Great work and a great video, well done. Commenters complaining about the finish maybe haven't noticed how lovely the matt looks once it dried. Did you glue all the spindles in place or only the two at either end? If not, could you say why?

Thanks for watching glad you liked it! I watch blacktail studio all the time I like Cam but he has somehow convinced everyone on TH-cam that Rubio Monocoat is the only wood finish in the world. The stuff looks great but it’s not durable polyurethane is.I did glue all the spindles the two end ones go all the way through the seat and are wedged underneath. They provide most of the strength.

Man all that beautiful work and wood getting a plastic finish. Try tried and true linseed and tree resin finish it’s all natural and looks amazing

I agree a hand rubbed finish looks much better. I'm normally shipping my work 3000 miles away from here. I don't want to risk call backs for minor scratches or drink rings. I do make people aware of the pros and cons.

hard oil might be a less plastic finish? i read there are cheaper same quality products as rubio monocoat available now.. @@donyacovella1230

Beautiful piece. How did you determine the height?

    • @donyacovella1230

The seat is 16 inches. I didn't do anything to scientific it just felt and looked right to me

Turned out nice, but the onlu problem I have is you don't talk in the video. Not sure if you know, but silent movies went away a long time ago.

I'm going to work up to narration. I'm new at this TH-cam world of video and editing I have a lot to learn

@@donyacovella1230I actually don't mind a no-talk video, the sound of the tools was enough for me. This was very relaxing to watch, the occasional printing on the screen was enough for me. What a beautiful bench you made. Keep the vids coming.

@@robjohnston5292 Well said Rob, no need for a narration, screen prints and sounds of the shop are just enough to enjoy the project. Who needs someone saying "I spread some glue" when you see him spreading glue ?

Thanks for watching glad you liked my video! The support spindles on the ends are 23 degrees and the back is around 18 inches from the seat to the top.
