  • In the poem 'Telephone Conversation' by Wole Soyinka, the narrator who is from a country in Africa and lives in England calls a landlady on the telephone about a house he wanted to rent. The narrator was ok with the price and location. In the era when most British home owners did not want to rent their houses to people of the 'black' race. The narrator did not want to go to the location, only for the landlady to discover that he is black and refuse to rent the house to him, therefore resulting in a wasted journey.
So the narrator decided to 'confess' to the landlady that he is African (black). The landlady who was feigning sophistication was disappointed. When the narrator realized the landlady was indeed a racist, he decided to play her at her own game of sophistication. He made simple thing sound difficult for her. The narrator also wanted to be on the same level as the landlady; to see normal things like sitting down as abnormal.
