30:48 the contrast between the people in the movie watching Truman smiling and crying because they're happy at his fake life made for their entertainment and the girls crying so hard because they actually have empathy and are devastated at his fake life broke me you girls are soo so sweet you really understand how terrible it is what they were doing to Truman, we all only have this one life and they took it from him💔

A good number of Americans have accepted the prison we built around ourselves, movies have been one of our few outlets, even that has been hijacked. I can see a real truman show being made one day. The moral compass is decaying rapidly. These girls could see the message behind this and feel real sorrow for a man trapped in his personal zoo/hell

You started laughing at the silliness of the situation, then began feeling awkward, then the anger. And more anger. This movie came just before the explosion of "reality TV" and very much predicted the level of lies and intrusiveness that "reality TV" was going to take us. And it absolutely has. The same with the surveillance state - today, if you leave your house, you are probably being recorded by 20-100 cameras, every day. This was an incredible reaction, and we all want to give you a hug and dry your eyes. You kind of felt it for all of us again.

There were "reality TV shows" as far back as the 60's with shows like "This Is Your Life." Granted, it wasn't as scripted as this era of reality TV but they certainly only presented the most dramatic events even back then.
And, true, we are recorded by at least a 100 different cameras everyday of our public lives but we constantly ignore the one camera looking directly at our face that's attached to our black screen devices. My phone camera has been capturing me as I type this comment.

I hear you. It's similar here in Europe (both eastern and western). By the time people finish high school they are so desensitized due to ruthless competition, watching Game of Thrones, getting cheated on by your significant other, seeing how salesmen, bankers and gangsters are held in high regard, so you kinda expect people to f you over...
Makes me curious about what Vietnam is really like, what behavior standards prevail, what sort of content is consumed... And it makes me sad about what we've done with ourselves...
The wind, one brilliant day, called
to my soul with an odor of jasmine.
"In return for the odor of my jasmine,
I'd like all the odor of your roses."
"I have no roses; all the flowers
      in my garden are dead."
"Well then, I'll take the withered petals
and the yellow leaves and the waters of the fountain."
the wind left. And I wept. And I said to myself:

We made up the calendar, work days, the weekend, laws, buildings, entertainment, etc. We constructed this society from beliefs that were based on truths and lies. In a sense, we are all in a cult with a certain amount of freedom to give the illusion we are free.

Oof. Of course, it's important to find new people you can trust, but if you ever feel alone and adrift, just remember: "Was anything real?" "You were real." Trust yourself to be your own anchor. _You_ were real. You know who you are, and you were strong enough to stand on your own. You can do this. Best of luck to you. 👍

@@WHADATBOYNAMEIS It is way more common than you think. There is a tool called the Bite Model, which is used to measure the level of control of different religions and other groups. The Bite Model does not actually use the term Cult, but it is used to determine if an organization is toxic, with the intent of helping to fix that organization. Most people consider a high score on the Bite Model a good indication that a religion is a cult, and I think that is a healthy way to use the term cult. Members of my old faith would disagree and feel hurt if they were called a cult, but the level of toxic control, the attacks on ex-Members (mostly ostracization and attacks on reputation rather than violence but that happens) as well as the financial exploitation of members in both getting them to fork over large amounts of money and time and the lies used to get them to provide free labor to the church. Their leaders tell everyone that no member, including leadership is paid for their church work, and yet the church leadership all live in mansions, ride around in limos and private jets and go on expensive vacations several times a year while everyone else suffers
