Happy to see we have so much overlap on favorite memoirs! I’ve added a couple of the ones I haven’t read to my TBR. I’m actually working on my fave nonfic video so far and a couple of these are on there.
One I would recommend if you haven’t read it yet is My Side Of The River by Elizabeth Camarillo Gutierrez.

Nonfiction recommendation videos are my favorites! I can't wait 😊 I have had My Side of the River on my TBR based on your recommendation for a while now but I am going to move it up higher on the list!

I loved Ten Steps to Nanette! They narrated their book and I just love their thick Australian accent. If you want to read another autistic comedian with a thick (Scottish)accent, check out Fern Bradys memoir Strong Female Character.

oh my goodness. I just looked it up and realized that I used the wrong pronouns for Hannah. Sorry about that. They are so amazing! I am going to add Strong Female Character to my TBR right now. Thanks!

I am a book tuber and also wrote a memoir. So I was very interested in your video. Even though I’ve read celebrity memoirs that I’ve really enjoyed like “, “life is a banquet“ by Rosalind Russell“. I prefer ordinary people memoirs like.“Know my name“. The ones that interest me from your suggestions are “Solito” and “the girl who smiled beads“.
Also memorial Drive. I think truth is stranger than fiction.
I really liked what you said about what makes a Memoir successful. you were right on with your parameters. I would also add that it should be true to the best of your memory. Many memoirs are fake or written as revenge. The most important factor for me is the voice. If I don’t like the Memoirist And/or the voice is not genuine, I won’t like the book.
Thank you for making this video. Aloha.

You are so right! If the book doesn't feel authentic it really can ruin it. Sometimes it is hard to know if what is being told is the objective truth and of course everyone has their own perspective but I would want the author to write truthfully to the best of their ability.

Gosh I gotta get to Solito sooner rather than later! It's my El Salvador pick for read the world!

I keep recommending it to people so I would love to hear your thoughts on it! I hope it is as good as I remember 😅

Some of my faves are on your list too. I can't believe I still haven't read I Am Malala. The Girl Who Smiled Beads has been on my radar for a while. I've had Hollywood Park on my shelf for a while so glad to hear your thoughts. Might have to move that up my list. I've been considering picking up Finding Me. You may have convinced me. 😊💙

I think you would like all of those! It has been quite a few years since I read Hollywood Park but it has stuck with me for that long!

I used to love memoirs but as I get older I find most memoirs self indulgent.

    • @savagereads
      @savagereads  หลายเดือนก่อน

That is why I try to be pretty selective on memoirs. I have read some really awful self-indulgent ones but there can be some really incredible gems as well 😊

I read a ton of memoirs. They are my favorite genre. Most are audiobooks and narrated by the author themselves.

I love a good audiobook narrated by the author! Especially when the author has experience in acting (or just is good at it) it can really add to the experience 😊

A good memoir is such a delight! I always like to see through someone else's eyes to try and understand different perspectives.

I have read hardly any non-celebrity memoirs, and almost all of those are comedians in some way. I probably should read more because I love biographies. That said, my favourite non-fiction of this year was Hons and Rebels by Jessica Mitford. I really need to read Know My Name, and i like the sound of Julia Child's one.

Great books! The only title I might suggest for you is No Land's Man by Aasif Mandvi. It's more like essays, but it is both touching and hilarious. It is especially good on audio!
