- Beco (BEE-co), the Columbus Zoo's month old baby elephant, has begun to explore the outside world. Over the last week, for short periods of time, he has been allowed to survey the grass and mud holes that are part of his two acre playground, all the while being cautious not to stray too far from the safety of his mothers legs.
Over the next few weeks, when the outdoor yard is dry enough for him, zookeepers will allow him and his mom access to the yard for short periods of time, gradually increasing this time as he becomes more accustomed to his surroundings. He will continue to be on display in his indoor habitat between 10:00 and 2:00 daily.
The Columbus Zoo and Aquarium is open 363 days a year 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. from Memorial Day weekend through Labor Day, and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. after Labor Day. General admission is $12 for adults, $7 for children ages 2 to 9 and seniors 60+. Children under 2 and Columbus Zoo members are free. The Zoo was named the #1 Zoo in America by USA Travel Guide and is accredited by the Association of Zoos and Aquariums (AZA.)
