    If you haven't tried the new Ripmo with MX (29/27.5) wheels, you really should. It was the single deciding factor for me buying this bike. It changes the way I ride, the way the trail feels and honestly has just made riding so much more fun! I realize this is not a "mullet" video but for me, it sort of is... Riding the SB140 LR and Ripmo V3 29er back-to-back was great but the clear winner was the Yeti... once I swapped wheels on the Ripmo it was game over! The smaller wheel and the softer suspension on the Ibis has been like turning a new page in my riding. I'll be interested to see if this is just a new novel fad in my riding experience or if this is the new normal for me and a long travel bike!

      I would build a small and mullet. I would like to make it as light as yours but with the wider IBIS carbon rims in i35. I have had a few wheels built up by Berd spokes wheels. So happy to see your son ripping down the trails with you.

      Great review as usual! I’m able to grab a discounted 2022 V2 Ripmo XT that’s brand new that was never sold. I know choosing a bike is a personal choice, but I was wondering if you would recommend taking the V2 over the V3 in this scenario? I’m a bigger guy than you. A little over 100 lbs than you and I’m
      6’1.

      Exactly, I've been riding mullet since 2018 on my rigid single speed and when I got my new Cannondale Scalpel SE2 I rode it for a bit 29er then finally switched to mullet and the bike is insane, the rear suspension tracks so much better, a no brainer IMO as I think every bike should be mullet, well at least for the way I ride and like the feel .

    "Are you really good enough to know the difference?" -- love it! This is the question I ask myself about every upgrade and the answer is almost always: no. Saving 1 second on a 3 minute trail, all for the "low cost" of a $1000 upgrade, seems to be what drives most other bike/component reviews these days.

    Mullet vs full 29 is going to depend on your trails. Here on the Colorado front range, our chunky tech climbs favor full 29er all the way, and that is reflected in mullet bikes generally languishing on bike shop sales floors here. The prior generation Ripmo is also probably the most popular bike ridden here. The next most popular bike is probably the SB140LR, since the actual Yeti "lunch ride" is located in Golden and that loop HEAVILY favors full 29 (steep, gnarly tech climb followed by an upper descent which is rooty/flowy and a lower descent which is a mile long high speed gnarfest).

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  18 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yeah, I completely agree with you. We have some highly technical trails down in Southern Utah... the 29er out back can help for sure but in the end, fitness and technique is king... if I can't get up something on 27.5.... I likely won't on a 29er.... just need more skill and honestly, more fitness!

    Be had every ripmo including the aluminum and the new one is magic. I rode it for a while full 29er then as a mullet and I don’t think I’ll go back to a 29 again. I can’t tell a difference climbing and it actually gives you an extra low gear because it’s a smaller wheel. On the descent mullet is amazing. I live in Santa Cruz so we have all different trails. This is the perfect bike for me as a one bike quiver that can do it all. I rode lift service with it as well and it can hold its own. Also not too much bike to go ride easy trails with my kids

    Honestly you can make the bike feel more sporty or soft by playing around with the air can like on the RS super deluxe. Slightly more negative volume (combined with slightly more air pressure) will give you a supple initial stroke and more supportive mid stroke

    It gets even more fun with a full 27.5 setup! Oh wait... Joking aside, 27.5 still offers great acceleration with a decent AL wheel that costs less than half of carbon. Would be cool to see a return to 27.5 up front for size M at least.

    I picked up a Ripmo V3 in XT build. I am just under 5'9" and got the medium which came with 29/27.5. It felt a little cramped but I swapped in a 50mm stem and a different set of bars and it fits me perfectly now. I'm not a fan of the bars that came with the bike. They seem to be swept back a bit more than I'd like. I put on Race Face SixC 35 bars and couldn't be happier.

    Congrats on the new Ripmo Jason. Love that color, like a satin green metallic. I just did a video of the Ripmo vs the Sb160. I think it's closer to the SB160 than the SB140. This is why I think you felt differences that the SB140 felt more supportive and the Ripmo more deeper. I may just do an SB140 like you. I wonder how the Ripley would feel at 140mm of travel. Hmmm. I think you like the FloatX because you are lighter weight. But for us heavier guys, the float X is not really good. For heavier riders I recommend the Super Deluxe Ultimate or the Vivid, totally transforms the feel of the Ripmo. I am so 29er guy, but you are seriously convincing me to try it. I bet the bike feels quicker as a mullet. I will say the Ripmo is probably the most versatile bike to date. You can run it at 130 or 140 rear travel as a Ripley. You can also run it as a 150mm or 160mm of travel, you can run it as 29er or a mullet. SO many ways to run it. I like you, don't really like the in frame storage, I never use it on my Ripmo. Ha...

      @mtbyumyum  18 วันที่ผ่านมา

      I'll go check out your video! Yep, super versatile bike for sure. I'm happy with the suspension and haven't had any problems with the Fox stuff.... for this type of bike and the trails I'll be riding it on, I prefer the MX wheelset for sure and am super pumped on it right now. For me, it's just more fun and it's super evident when swapping back and for between this and the SB140.

      @@travelthenarrowtrail8660 as another lighter rider like Jason - I’m basically identical weight and height to him - I find the Float X a great match for this frame. Supple and supportive. I guess it explains why on the forums so many people are unhappy with the Float X, as I’d think the majority of riders are a fair bit over 140 pounds, and feel the frame really comes alive with the SDU or Vivid. That said, I’m looking more for a long travel trail bike, and can definitely see how aggressive riders would find the Ripmo underwhelming in the stock configuration. A Vivid or Float X2 on this frame must be something else.

    Yes Jason! I got the new Ripley frame when it was released in the summer and it’s terrific. I’ve since done the Ripmo conversion - Ibis tuned Float X, 36 fork and the clevis - and think it’s even better this way. Obviously more capable than the Ripley (and the new Ripley is pretty darn capable) and I’m not sure it gives up anything. Still incredibly fun on mellower trails … unlike a lot of 160/150 bikes.
    I spent several days in Bentonville on a Stumpjumper 15 Pro. Everyone seems to love that bike. It’s great, no question, but I think the Ripmo is better in every way.I don’t understand that pink bike criticism at all.
    I haven’t yet tried the Ripmo in mullet but you make me curious for sure. It’s great in full 29.

      Nice, glad you're enjoying your Ripley in Ripmo mode!! I guess I'll have to go watch the PinkBike video on the V3 Ripmo.... several people have referenced it now in these comments and I really don't know what they're talking about... I've really enjoyed this bike and have ridden it back to back with the current Bronson, Stumpy 15, SB140 LR, HD6, Trail 429 Enduro and Transition Smuggler... not all the same bikes but all trail bikes and the Ripmo was not only the most well rounded, it was the most fun because of the smaller rear wheel...

      I own a Ripmo V2S and live in Colorado. It’s s very good on most trails we have here. Where it isn’t the best is on sections of super janky trail or really tame tight trails . It’s fantastic in Moab, Crested Butte and Fruita and pretty much every high alpine trail I’ve ridden here Wyoming, and Utah. Ore Chute is probably the burliest trail I’ve ridden on it and it handled that just fine. The trails where Jason rides in Corner Canyon are much tamer than here on the Front Range of Colorado. I spent a week riding in Salt Lake, Park City and Deer Creek. I took my SCOR 2030 on that trip and didn’t feel under-biked on any trail we rode. I’m not sure how the massive braking bumps on Jacobs Ladder don’t show up in Jason’s videos. But man they will keep you on your toes especially at the speeds you get going down Jacobs. The trail system at Corner Canyon is very well designed and the trails are a blast to ride. Most people would have a great time riding there. We lapped Jacob’s to Rush for hours. The PNW is much burlier than here and there, it’s much steeper with lots of roots and rock. It’s very different riding there compared to pretty much everywhere else in the country. The average rider would be in over there head on a lot of trails there. Most Blue trails there would be black trails here. Do to that I don’t place much value in PBs bike reviews. There is and epidemic all over. Where people think they need a big over built enduro bike to ride normal trails. Trails that not long ago we rode on hard tails. We call it PB Syndrome or Waaaay over biked. If you’re going to buy a bike based on reviews find a reviewer that is riding trails like you ride and rides like you. Also consider where the bike manufacturer is located. Yeti’s ride the way they do because of Apex and White Ranch. The PB climb test was questionable as well. When was the last time you climbed a whole climb out of the saddle? Then base a bikes all around climbing on that one short climb? That definitely wouldn’t go well here or even there for that matter. Also Keep it in n mind every bike in that test is a very good bike and they are nitpicking. The Spot was the only other bike in that test that could give the my Ripmo a challenge up the climbs we have here. Having owned a Bronson I’d wager good money I’d be faster dh with it but it’s slower on the climbs and flats. 4 minutes slower on the climb up Belcher to Long Horn. Belcher is a soul crushing climb and will definitely test a bikes climbing prowess. I’ve only done one demo ride on the new Ripmo. Definitely not enough time on give a honest opinion but I can say it rides different than my V2S.

      @@mtbyumyum Jason, in PB’s latest (2025) trail bike field test, they tested and compared trail bikes with each other. They released a bunch of videos (including a podcast) on TH-cam related to the field test, where they are comparing the new Ripmo to the Spec Stumpy, the SC Bronson, the Rocky Instinct etc. and an individual review of each bike. I’ll be trying to share these links with you.

    An Ibis feeling like a Santa Cruz isn't a good thing.

      More clearly put, the new Ripmo feels slightly more progressive than the previous model Ripmo.... less springy and more deep and bottomless like a Santa Cruz....

    Love seeing your son's skills. Great job teaching him! However to be frank, I did not get much out of the sparse review. Some very reputable reviewers have totally trashed this bike. I get you are an Ibis "fan boy", but your relationship with Salt Cycles and Ibis may be clouding your judgment. As long as Salt Cycles supplies you with demo bikes and killer deals on bikes, are you really going to tell the truth about the bikes you review? No, because it does not benefit you to do so. Your professional relationships call your credibility into question. I am so tired of this cra* by TH-cam Bike Reviewers. I had to get this off my chest. All the best for 2025.

      Thanks for the feedback and your concerns are not unfounded... I'll address your comment. This was not a bike review... it was just a New Bike Day video and me talking about the bike and sort of why I ended up purchasing it. As for Ibis, I don't get bikes from Ibis. I have no relationship with the actual brand... or any brand for that matter. As for Salt Cycles, you're right. I have a huge bias to this bike shop because without them, I would have stopped producing content and publishing to this channel years ago. Chris gets me very good deals on the few bikes that I actually end up purchasing like this Ibis Ripmo. But I purchase them with my own money. You can go back and look at the actual bikes I've purchased.... in 2023 I rode the Stumpjumper EVO all season.... it was my go-to long travel bike and Salt Cycles doesn't sell Specialized... I also owned and rode the Stumpjumper for maybe 4 months... again, you can't buy either of those bikes from Salt Cycles. As for other reviewers trashing the V3 Ibis Ripmo, not really sure what to tell you here... I don't know what other reviews say about the bike or why they are trashing it. I really like the bike. Of the mx bikes I've ridden, I liked it best. For a lighter weight rider, the Ibis "light traction tune" is incredible! I think it's pretty clear to most people I prefer to ride bikes that Salt Cycles sales.... Ibis, Yeti, Pivot, Transition, Cannondale and Revel... but I've owned other bikes in the past few years including Specialized and Rocky Mountain. I really wish I had greater access to other big brands like Giant, Trek, Specialized, Scott, Evil and Santa Cruz but I don't. I am in my 40's with 3 kids a full time career and life to live outside of publishing mountain bike video's on TH-cam. I think the video's I publish (for the most part) are very helpful to a lot of people who don't get to ride these bikes before they buy them. I also make it pretty dang clear that most bikes today are very good.... what brand you buy likely matters less than the actual type of mountain bike you purchase and sizing....

      Thanks for the response and clarification. I now understand where you were coming from in the video. I was not fully aware of your situation. You do a great job given you work full time and still put out content. I bought a Yeti SB140, based mainly on your review. I am struggling to like the bike. Not your issue. The reason I said that is because your reviews do make a difference. Happy New Year and hope 2025 is great for you and your family!
