You’re more generous than I am. The story is so cliched (I know it’s based on a book but still…) and the songs are so boring. I was so tempted to leave at intermission. I only liked the poster art and some of the acrobatics. And I saw this in April, this is apparently the improved version from previews.
I picked up a rush ticket for the show over the weekend and was definitely underwhelmed. It seemed to be about half an hour too long due in large part to a boring book and score, something that the pretty impressive circus tricks can't make up for. It lacked cohesion despite the commitment of the performers. It's another of several shows I've seen in NYC recently that weren't ready yet. That dream sequence late in the second act should have been ditched in previews.
I'm glad most of the audiences who have seen the show love it. 7 Tony nominations, including Best Musical, is awesome! My daughter is in the circus ensemble, so I've seen this show since the previews in Atl, and I'm wowed by the talent of the entire cast. The songs are "different" from your typical Broadway musical songs, and I really liked them. Most Broadway musicals are so overdone and sappy, imho: "Wicked" comes to mind. Whether or not W4E wins the Tony, this production is going to be on Broadway for quite some time!❤
I enjoyed this show, and I was wowed by a lot of the acrobatics, as well as the animal puppetry too. At one point two of the performers were on a pole, one going up, one going down, and they actually passed each other, in the blink of an eye changing places. It's not fair comparing current broadway music to Rodgers and Hammerstein, who's songs were in a class by themselves. Broadway music for the most part in the recent past, no way measures up to them.
I liked the show and I was more “wowed” than you by the acrobatic choreography especially with the horse scene. I agree that the music was just okay but overall the show was enjoyable. I thought the cast was great.
might get a nomination for set/etc but nothing for book/music/actors......the elephant was better than some of the actors who had nothing really to work with and why need a flash-back...could have just opened. with the vet coming to work in the circus might run for a couple of months.....probably close after the tony nominations come out if they are lacking
I just really hope they perform The Road Don't Make You Young for the Tonys

It was such a sad book….I think I would not love it live
I loved this show. 😊
