Thanks for the video. I've been putting off doing brakes on my LX172 and just downshifting / praying to god on hills (almost had to bail off a few times). Think after seeing this I will finally do it.

You're welcome, Tony. Yeah, never hurts to have brakes! Thanks for watching. 👍🍻

    Nice work!
For a minute there I thought this would turn into a riding lawnmower crash video :) One million views would then follow....
    Great video

HAHAHA! For a second I was thinking the same - the steering got extremely vague at one point. 😂 Thanks for watching, LL!

Good video Smitty. I've never had to do those brakes before. Hey, you better install brake cooling ductwork if your gonna do test drives at 100 MPH! Hahaha.

I know, right? I don't think they were designed for that, HAHAHA! They're pretty small, but work damn good! Thanks for watching, Chris!

Thanks for the video! Those 172 models were a pretty good mower especially with the manual transaxle, you didn't need much brake.

Thanks, Bill! Yeah, they were still pretty well made back in '93. Thanks for watching!

hi smitty good thing that tire didn't blow on the test drive! yea that vid brought me back to the old days when I was a small eng tec... I liked that job. hope you dispatched that tick the correct way.... a slow death by fire! have a good week ahead!

    • @SmittySmithsonite

Would've made for a great video anyway, HAHAHA! Not so much for me ... that would've hurt a bit!
I enjoy working on small engines. A lot less stress than modern cars/trucks, for sure. Oh, yeah that tick got introduced to Mapp gas at 3,670°F - wasn't much left to him after that. 😉 Thanks for watching, Scuba!

Cool video... never done Deere brakes before! I had no idea what to expect.
Looks like you had too much fun on this job! Lol

Thanks, Cuba! Yeah, coasting down the hill is the highlight of the day. 😁 I usually can get over 30 mph. 😂 That one had ALOT of slop in the steering - thought I was going to be posting a crash vid, lol! Thanks for watching, Cuba!🍻

One observation, on final assembly, the washer (lightly lubricated) goes directly against the lever, between the lever and the angle bracket. Then adjust nut to give 0.13mm(0.005 In.) clearance between outer brake pad and disc.

Do yourself a favor and remove the cotter pin from the pedal-linkage first so you can get the lever off AFTER you remove the two top mounted lever-guide plate screws. If you don't have the transmission dismounted then you will have to use a 3/8" wrench to loosen those top-mount screws. Get them started with the wrench and then use a socket and turn it with your fingers to get them out.
The brakes on these mowers use dowel-pins to push the rotor into the transmission body which has a brake pad in it as well as the lever-side brake pad. The rotor slides on a splined input-shaft which is connected to the drive-output (wheels). Common replacement items are the pads and rotor. Make sure to grease the dowels and splined shaft, if those two item cannot move freely then you have no brakes!
    Cheers!

I live on a hill and go though those little brakes pretty fast. That sucker looked fast!

    • @SmittySmithsonite
      @SmittySmithsonite  5 ปีที่แล้ว

Yeah, they'll wear pretty quick if they get used alot - not much size to them at all. It's amazing they stop the 500 lbs. + operator as well as they do!
LOL, I think I hit at least 30 MPH that time! I just threw it in neutral at the top of the hill, and let her fly. 🤣 Thanks for watching, Wyatt!
