The problem with people's reviews of this movie comes when people review it from their own perspective of today, and not of Walt's perspective and the changes in his life and in his neighborhood and how it has changed over the decades and why.

Problem is people re idiyots. Walt was right 99% of the way through. The neighborhood was a crayphole and deserved derision, so did the low class, low principle scuymbags around him. No one deserves respect without having to prove it. No one. When an individual proves it, then you respect them.

Yes, that is real in some neighborhoods.
I worked as a police officer for over 35 years (retired a year ago) in such a city and spent 20 years on an Asian gang unit. I also commanded the street crime/gang unit for 3 years.
As an example, I worked one assault where one Vietnamese girl cut another Vietnamese girl’s face with a razor blade and split her from her ear to her chin because she didn’t hang out with gang bangers.
I have worked several drive by shootings and home invasions with hostages.
I could go on for hundreds of stories but it isn’t about what I have seen. So Kabir, when you ask, is this or could this be real …. Yes, this movie could be the mirror of a real neighborhood. Fortunately most people are unaware of this and that is great but a substantial percentage of “some” cities, this might appear to be just life as they know it.

As happy as I am that a lot of us don't have to experience this type of life, it is 110% real all around the US. The neighborhood I grew up in was a great neighborhood when we moved there, but shortly after we moved in it started heading this direction. It's still somewhat ok, but 5 minutes from my old house this is exactly what it's like, so my old neighborhood is maybe a decade from this. And I know that it's nothing compared to some really rough parts of some states.
Also, in the movie, they murdered an unarmed man so that was his goal, the punishment for killing an unarmed old man who posed no threat to you is higher than it would have been if he had a gun.

Fun Fact: Walt's dog, Daisy, is Clint Eastwood's beloved family retriever in real life.
Automobile Enthusiast Fact: Ford Gran Torinos were built in Lorain, Ohio, one hundred forty-five miles from Detroit, Michigan. Walt's truck could have been built in Wayne, Michigan, twenty miles from Highland Park.
Gun Enthusiast Fact: Walt Kowalski's gun collection seems to consist of weapons he used in the military. His rifle is an American M1 Garand, a nine and a half pound .30-06 gas-operated rifle. It was first issued during World War II, then re-issued in Korea before being phased out by the M14 selective fire .308 rifle. His pistol is an M1911A1, a .45 ACP semi-automatic handgun also issued during the Korean war.

So since the subject pertaining to CE was never broached (had I realized that factor at the time), I'm supposing that all was well and went professionally. Perhaps this should really be taken into consideration being that the first episode of "Rawhide" in which she appeared also included what may have been CE's first on-screen kiss, which just so happened to be w/ Gloria. Very nice conclusion, overall this is one of the most beautiful reactions to this wonderful film, even if I'm still sicht sure which is the best of all so far.
This film made me feel good the first time I saw it, because I learned a lot about myself. On the one hand Walt's racist statements pissed me off, on the other hand I just judged him, even though it was exactly this judging of him that pissed me off, without me thinking about what made him become like that, what he experienced, that he was in Korea, etc., that caused me a lot of self-reflection.
By the way, the big heroine next to Walt for me is Sue, because she was a lot smarter than me and probably many of us, didn't react deprecatingly to harsh statements from him, but impressed him with her quick-witted answers (example: we don't eat dogs, we eat cats) and thus broke the ice until he became more open. Without Sue and her kind, from which we can learn a lot, the positive change of Walt would probably never have happened and one can probably see it as a kind of karma that exactly this brought about change made him save this family in his very own way.

"Zipper Head" is a slur, of sorts. In Vietnam and Korea, there were so many dead bodies, the had to drive their Jeeps over them. The alternating tread of the tires across them resembled the pattern of a zipper. Pretty gruesome to think that you saw so much death, you eventually normalized it, in that way.

More common was the use of military weapons to shoot in the head, caused the skin on the head to unzip like a zipper. The Jeep was a secondary usage.

This movie is about FAMILY. His real family weren't his sons and grandaughter. His concept of family is having mutual respect, similar values and real connection. The total opposite of racism. We can joke about color, attitudes and cultural differences (now this is almost taboo) but the character is what really unite us. Not a color. Not a music genre or certain type of language. This is for mature people, not weak, easily offended teenagers. Life used to be a LOT harder in Walt's times.

I watch your reviews of American things. I spent a lot of time in Britain so I see both sides of it. I think as Americans we already knew she was violated. We also realized when he was about to “pull a fake gun at the end.” And most Americans immediately got the ramifications of the tragic hero, who was already dying, choosing to sacrifice himself so that the gang would be locked away for murder. If you understand American culture you can see the big picture a bit more easily. Also, the get off my lawn thing is serious in America, especially to older people who worked hard to pay off their homes. Lastly, he probably watch that neighborhood change around him over 50 years. It probably started off as all white, some buying their homes in the GI Bill, then integration, then the rise of gangs, then Asian refugees. It’s a lot for an older white man to get used to…

That is what happened to my childhood neighborhood that I lived in from the time I was 2 years old until I was 12, (rom 1949- 1959) we lived upstairs from my paternal Hungarian grandparents. They lived there until their death, long after we moved to the suburbs when I was 12. My grandfather passed away in '74 (my grandmother died before he did) and after that the neighborhood started to deteriorate and became more dangerous. It broke my heart to see the home I grew up in abandoned and falling apart. The neighborhood declined so much, and had a lot of incidences like this happening in it. Finally, my childhood home where I had 12 years of happy memories, was gone....demolished at some point, nothing but an empty lot left there. I just cried. SO, WALT witnessed this decline in his own neighborhood since he stayed there the whole time. When we moved in '59, it was STILL a GREAT, safe, happy, predominately Eastern European neighborhood that was settled by people who immigrated from Hungary, Poland, and Czechoslovakia during the 1900s- 1930s, like my Dad's grandparents. I MISS those days growing up there, one of the best times in my life.

"on Day 1 of shooting. We did the first take. It went pretty well. Clint says, ‘cut, print, check the gate,’ which means we’re gonna move on. And I said, ‘Hey boss, maybe you think we could get one more.’ He just turned and goes, ‘Why? Do you want to waste everybody’s time?’"

No idea what that car would go for today, but I had one just like it in the early 90s, it was my favorite car ever. Same color, cobra sport with a 351 Cleveland engine. Remember the day I got it,we were looking for a good gas mileage little 6 cylinder and I spotted it in the lot. My husband said that's not what we're looking for and I said yeah but can I just take it for a drive? I hit the gas leaving the lot and it fishtailed. Husband said honey if it's too much for you... I said "sold!". Finally sold it after husband put dent in it and transmission went out. Haven't loved any car as much since, sad. Great movie even if I originally watched it for the car.

To be fair, he is British. Not sure if he lives in the UK, but gangs aren't like that over there. Yes of course there are gangs in the UK, but "streets gangs" is very much an America problem. Other countries tend to have more high up professional gangs. Like the mafia. But America has a load of small gangs running around. Also black people are much different in the UK. Not trying to be mean, but its true. Honestly every race is more aggressive in America. This country is on the decline, and fast.
