  • Join me as I visit the Forestiere Underground Gardens in Fresno, CA. A highlight on any visit to California's central valley, the Forestiere Underground Gardens is a wonderful place to visit.
In the early 1900s, Sicilian immigrant, citrus grower and visionary Baldassare Forestiere began turning what was useless farmland into a vast network of rooms, tunnels and courtyards as a subterranean escape from the sweltering Central Valley summer heat.
Using only shovels, picks and other hand tools, Baldassare was inspired to excavate for forty years, going as deep as 25 feet underground and spanning over 10 acres. He grew fruit trees and grapevines underground - many of which are still thriving today!
Today, guests from around the world tour through his grottos, passageways and underground homes. I think Baldassare would be thrilled by all of the guests marveling at his life's work today and finding inspiration underground.

How well deserved is the Italian reputation for fortitude. Well done, Mr Forestiere.

This puts modern architecture to shame.
The world needs more of this.

Speaking from experience, I am not sure it puts modern architecture to shame, but Baldassare certainly is the type of man we see a lot less of today. City building standard and inspectors would shut down a project like this today. Baldassare was a real renaissance man. Thanks for watching and taking the time to leave a comment,.

My grandfather knew Baldassare back in the '20s and '30s. He would take his three boys (my dad being one of them), to visit Baldassare and buy grapes for making dago red. Both he and Grandma came from Sicily, and my uncle said there was a family (cousin?) connection back in the Old country. My uncle called Baldassare "Uncle", although that was just an avuncular title. The following year Grandpa would take the boys and go back to Fresno and take Baldassare a jug or two of the wine he made.

Sadly, Baldassare passed away at about age 66 before he could realize his dream.

      you are kidding
      you must be
He lived his dream every way of his life
Can you imagine how many thousands he even inspires to 'live their dreams' since his passing

Pay no attention to know-it-all detractors and desperate attention seeker trolls. Very unhappy, disturbed individuals...

She is totally misrepresenting history and fabricating lies...Forestiere according to other videos about him years ago only talks of an argument with his Dad ...He came to California from New. York (area) where he worked building the underground tunnels rails... went underground when he was not able to succeed with his Citrus Fortune as it was too hot and water issues....He did ask a lady to marry him however she turned him down and he remained single! He fashioned his gardens after the catacombs and cellars from his Native Country! Ice how far away did he walk and bring it back with two donkeys? He wasn't a bachelor He chose to stay single after the love of His life returned His proposal down! Not a hose a pipe maybe for His bath..there used to be a room that looking up you could see the fish aquarium..the "modern drip system" does Not look anything like the very first documentary I watched on this years ago...and if memory serves there was a water system set up that flowed through a channeled type system ...where the plants were watered from the ground up unless it rained...I could be wrong about the water but I can't find the old documentary now....The Gardens were in a Legal battle via Descendants for years. Many acres were sold off to pay for legal fees...Forestiere did all work with manual labor ..picks, wheelbarrows and with help from donkey's..aI so wish I could find the old videos ECT...His land may of been 80 acres but other articles state 70..of which just ten acres were underground ...and three stories deep..this video makes me mad Do your research fully this lady is a farce!

Thanks for watching and commenting. We present the locations we visit as represented by the people who represent them as if we were tourist. This is not a documentary, and we are not journalist. We are roadtrippers presenting what we see as presented to us. There were many more rooms to see, (like the one with the fish aquarium), but we like to leave some surprises to those who may want to visit on their own. Many of your comments further support what was said in the video. Again, thanks for watching.

So you were sadly misinformed about a great many things. Many different stories have been told over the years and they were wrong, the woman in this video spent years digging through memoirs of the family, newspapers and reports from Baldassare's time. Everything that is said now comes from the closest sources to the man himself. The woman in the video is a professional historian, please understand that in the past, rumors and false stories were told to "romanticize" Baldassare's story. If you would like clear and accurate information I recommend taking a tour in person.

@@Wizardmaster55 Thanks for your input. I appreciate you taking the time to comment and clear things up. And of course, thanks for watching and I hope you become a subscriber. I used to work for Disney and I am still amazed about rumors, "legends", and hearsay people, even cast members, pass on as gospel truth. The crew enjoyed their time at the gardens. I've been there twice, once not long before the pandemic, and the time we filmed. And I can say the stories, told by two different individuals, were consistent.
