- Dame Mitsuko Uchida joined forces with Seiji Ozawa and the Saito Kinen Orchestra in 2006 in this performance of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto in E flat major. Ozawa formed this ensemble in 1992 in an effort to merge Japanese orchestras and performers with international artists.
As inspiring as Uchida's Mozart performances have always been, some might argue that her Beethoven interpretations are every bit as good; if not better!

Interesting chord progression…2:41-2:58 & 6:14-6:31… a Japanese, IVM7-V7-iii7-vi, koakuma chord progression, can’t be anything European… Beethoven would have disliked it due to his disapproval of Napoleon's conquest. Uchida is a genius you know... 39:26 ...
Found myself think of Beethoven, the ability to remember the sounds even after losing his hearing, loved watching her play....magnificent!
Aren‘t we lucky in this time, to be able to listen to so many great interpretations and watch them?! Imagine time before recordings and the ‚net‘! You would have been able to hear the one or the other musician playing in your corner of the world. But you would never have heard, Ushida, Grimaud, Argerich, Brendel or Ashkenazi and been able to compare them as you do today. And Ushida is up there with the stars in the heavens when she launches into the second movement.
Yes. While there is much to complain about these days, it is marvellous to be able to receive these gems. TH-cam is the best platform. TV cannot compare and can never reach this platform.
I attended a concert of Ms. Uchida performing Mozart’s piano concerto #22 directing the English Chamber Orchestra from the piano. It is the most magical concert I have ever attended. I was left in a euphoric buzz for days.
What an inspired performance, from the tenderest moments to thunderous fury, from the softest whisper of sound to the loudest battle cries! Bravo Dame Mitsuko!!

Oh, and as for Maestro Ozawa, I lived in San Francisco when he so masterfully led our orchestra. He is a most accomplished conductor and truly one of the world's best in his time. Also, BRAVO!

PC#5 is my life time favorite and listened to many a different pianist over 50 years. Ms. Uchida is one of the best for this Masterpiece.
When I was fourteen years old I heard Emperor concerto for the first time and it was love from the first bar on. Fifty years this piece still mesmerizes me. I totally agree with you

I do not surprise Mitsuko studied Beethoven and Mozart in the music school in Vienna. Also she plays Mozart's concerto BY herself without using any conductors; play the piano and conducting orchestra by herself. Not living in Japan, having British passport, this performance is extraordinarily rare to watch around the world! Just once I went to Seiji's concert with New Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, playing Mozart's Piano concerto with Grand Virtuoso Ms Michiko Uchida, inviting my parents to the concert. Surprisingly just after starting Bruckner's Symphony No.5, Mozarterian's father fell asleep, finished their magnificient performance...OMG

Oh! yeah! sensibility lady's Beethoven No.5 is so graceful, beautiful and feathery touch. especially Maestro Tempo is veryvery suitable for No.5 Piano Concerto for me, that's my opinion. I hear that "Beethoven said Tempo is Music"(91yrs.Japanese) on the other hand I would feel that's Japaneseticism rhythm and grace note probably?

I am pleased that I have opportunity to watch this concert, never seen Uchida playing Beethoven concerto 5 . I think this is very fine performance for pianist and conductor and Orchestra , they are all in one ,excellent !! Thank you for showing .
Not to brag, but happy that I took a picture with her. I've seen her so many times that she said: "You look very familiar." Also, she signed my Mozart book. I also sent her roses. During one of my visits to Lincoln Center I told her I love to watch her emotions as she plays, and she said: "You shouldn't be watching, you should be listening." LOL I said, you're right. And we laughed. Not only is she a wonderful pianist, but she's also very nice & friendly to let her fans go back stage following her wonderful performances.

I also like to watch and listen to her. The experience brings enjoyment to two senses, that of listening and watching. Her emotional expressions help to convey the soul of the music better than just by listening alone.

Not one of her better performances, numerous mistakes! She not only misses the first note of the second movement but cuts off the bassoon for the last note/ and lots of flubs in between. Live music is such fun. I appreciate the opportunity to hear this recording, thanks for posting.

自分は、何も知らないただの、労働者ですが、感じた事、ただ、言いたい放題、書いたコメントですがでも、本当に良い演奏だと思います。!!!

I remember many years ago when I was singing in the Spanish National Choir, our director of the Spanish National orchestra best performance for him was one without any mistakes. Fantastic musician but what a poor artist. Music and art in general is about communication. It's not a circus and see what I can do more difficult. It's not a sport.
This performance is not good, it's extraordinary for me. I had tears of emotion and owe. Bravissima Mirsuko and fantastic orchestra very well and meaningfully conducted by Ozawa.
Who cars if she plaid "wrong" notes very occasionally. I didn't even noticed.
内田光子さんの事を知れば知るほど、演奏が大きく感じる。小澤さんのオーケストレーション、流石です。
ただ、この曲はミケランジェリとジュリーニの非の打ち所がない演奏がやはり最高峰だと感じた。
