I need to get me a little people’s flute. The cherokee 4 hole and B flute from Blue Bear are great. I even have one of the clay bird whistles from years ago.
This is a great video which I shared with my sister. I bought your little people flute for her birthday, and i may buy one for myself as my first Native American flute (I play, for fun, a concert flute and recorder).. We both agreed that we are happy waiting because we know it's going to be good. Thank you 😊
I always wanted to buy a flute from your website but sadly due to the fall of South African economy and a terrible postal service it makes it poses a challenge
Now I do wonder... Could one of the Little People who has really big hands play a low bass flute? 😄 Anyway, a while ago I received the flutes I ordered from you, and I really love them! One of them was a Little People flute, and I just love the tone of it. It gets played as often as the other ones! So while I can understand people are drawn to low tone flutes initially, they should definitely try some higher toned ones too!
I'm making Irish Flutes. As a white Australian from English parents, can I play the Irish flutes I make? LOL. People getting bent out of shape over cultural "appropriation" obviously don't understand what that is. People claiming their culture has been "appropriated" probably don't know that what they think of as their "culture" probably came from somewhere else in the first place. Culture literally means "of the people", and last time I looked, we are all people. I play Irish flutes and blues guitar, I eat Asian food (and Italian and Mexican etc ad nauseam). Most of all, your culture is what YOU do (The general "you" meaning anyone reading this) because it's what you find useful, safe, comfortable, fun, interesting, productive or any other reason you do it. People need to be proud of where they came from but remember that it's not a box you can't get out of or a shield to keep others out. New people adopting things from other cultures is what keeps them alive and fresh, even (or especially) if they change the context. Sorry, I'll get off the soapbox now...
Hi sir charlie, I just finish one bamboo 5hole flute in the og G I am very happy to get the same tone..thank you sir...I am now making flute presently in fact some friends ordered flute for their youth...I am now experimenting using your tipson how w to make flute of course many times I failed but I still go on making flites out of PVC pipe, bamboo ...thank you sir❤
LOL!! All the flutes I’ve ever made were out of cedar, willow or river cane. I’m Chickasaw and we always made our flutes out of local trees, not African ebony or imported mahogany. When people asked me what key my flutes were in. I always told them it was in the key of “me”. Since it’s my body measurements that determine the dimensions of my flutes. It always annoyed me horribly when someone pulled out a guitar tuner to see if my flutes were “in tune”. And then they would point out that my flute was in D flat or some such nonsense. I told them if they wanted a flute that played like a European flute to European scale, they should go and buy a machine made flute designed to play in the European scale. A Native American flute is an individual musical instrument that has its own quirks and personality. You have to learn it as an individual instrument with its own voice.
Quick question for you. If you learned how to make flutes from Doc Tate, and to be honest with you I'm not sure if he was native or not, I don't believe so, if you're using his techniques, are your flutes Native American or Native American Style? If you're teaching his flute making technique, can you call it the "old way", are you teaching a Native American flute making technique? I do have Chickasaw friends but only a Chickasaw Friedman in my family.
@@BlueBearFlutes I didn’t learn from Doc. He just helped me along the way with encouragement. I admired him because he was the most notable flute maker I knew when I first started making flutes. He encouraged me to keep improving my skills. Doc was Comanche. I was on good terms with him and several others in the Native American arts community in Oklahoma back in the 80’s and 90’s. Yeah, I consider the way I was taught it the “old way”. In the perspective of it being done since metal hand tools were introduced and became readily available to American Indians. If I wanted to go real old school with it. I suppose stone tools would be the way to go.
@@BlueBearFlutes As far as my flutes are concerned. I think my flutes are Native American style made by a Native American. Are my flutes Native American? Well they come from trees that are native to America….. so I guess they are Native American flutes. 😂
@FriedPi-mc5yt I believe it makes a good topic for discussion. And of course if you've watched many of my videos, I do try to point out that natives didn't historically tune our flutes to scales, 432 or any other such baloney, adulto today, in order to keep up with demand, I do use countless pieces of equipment it is critical to me people know the difference between historic, relevant and most importantly honest. Thanks for commenting!
@@BlueBearFlutes Yes, I think it’s a good topic for discussion as well. I never wanted to make a living at it or do it part time for supplemental income. If someone is wanting to do that, machines are the way to go. There’s no way a person could meet demand doing it the way I do. It’s far too labor intensive and just not economically feasible. I don’t think people would be willing to pay me $700 - $800 for one of my flutes. But that’s what it would amount to if they paid me by the hour to make one by hand with no machines. The tools I use are pretty much no different than what would have been available before the “Removal”. I even made myself a few pump drills with different sizes of cutters for making holes. Cane takes awhile to cure under the right conditions. Willow and cedar take at least a year and then some before it’s ready to be used for flutes. So you have to plan ahead for what you think you might be doing two years from the day you cut your materials. That’s a tough call sometimes. Good for you for doing that balancing act and working without a net. I think it’s fantastic that there are people who are dedicated to putting a quality product in the hands of people who appreciate a good Native American flute. Of course I would like to see mainstream musicians play them in concerts and on their recordings. I don’t care who plays them. I just want them played. I'm sorry for another ridiculous question.. I want to learn the Native American Flute as my first instrument. How can one tell if it's 432hz vs 440hz? I saw on your website that with certain flutes you can tune them to something other than 440hz if requested. Sorry again, and thank you!
in regards to rush orders. When working for others , I place a certain dollar value on my time. In theory, you could calculate how much extra time it would take to stop what you were doing, take the next flute coming off the line, make a special label, run into town to the Fedex place, pay the next day air fee, send it off, and return home to what you were doing. Add that all up, mark it up by 50% or whatever for the nuisance factor, and tell the person requesting special treatment, that that amount is what they would need to pay extra. On the other hand, you could say that doing all that would not contribute to your quality of life, even with the extra money, and politely decline. Personally picking out a flute- I have not seen or played one of your flutes, but I think I can safely assume that any that you make will sound great. I collect bells and wouldn't buy one without hearing them first. Same with a flute which is why I have made several for myself. So I understand someone wanting to do that. I also understand what a huge burden running any type of retail space is. (personally not worth it)
To the people who needed a flute so quick, they could follow one of your instruction videos and make one in a day. Anyway big fan, I was wondering if you or in the Native American culture, learned to whistle with just your mouth? Professional whistlers are pretty cool. Thank you 🙏🏻
@charliechrist7537 I'll be honest with you, -the way is within-. I do make Four Hole flutes which are great for people who have at least four fingers on one hand or two fingers on each hand. In my life however I have taught so many people how to make flutes and in doing so, at one event I had a man who was a power lineman who had both of his arms blown off at the elbow. I realize this is a little graphic but to watch him make flutes in my class, help me teach others to make flutes by helping them use power tools and then to play it himself, I'm not really sure what a disability is anymore. He was one of the most inspiring people I have ever met!
this is fantastic ! ---- only the strong survive ! the hell with the rest of em , must be why their is a gate at the end of my driveway ! keep the morons away ! thanks man !---------------------- i'm not alone .
To question number 3, I am from Lithuania and I play make Native American flutes, and other instruments from that culture, I feel more connected to their instruments than my own land, my soul is from native America my body is from Lithuania :D and there is other part of me likes Mayan culture.
Question 1 isnt ridiculous, if there asking that then they probably havent played a flute before at all and its perfectly reasonable for them to ask that.
Disappointing video. The first two questions are, in my view, legitimate questions. Not all customers are flute experts and therefore any question asking about the playability would be reasonable. I agree question 3 seems a little daft, but don’t mock someone’s lack of knowledge. Those customers are still contributing to your success. Treat them with the respect they deserve. The fourth question re shipping times etc would suggest to me that you do not clearly outline your shipping policies on your website in a manner that would answer this common type of question. Question 5, once again shows that you do not provide relevant information on your website. A customer asking if they can come see a product before they buy is reasonable if you don’t advise of the reasons this is not possible on your website. Comparing your business to Bill Gates is ridiculous. None of the questions can be considered ridiculous. They are reasonable questions from potential paying customers, respect them. I’m am fairly confident that you will loose quite a few subscribers after this video. I am one for sure. Such lack of respect is so disappointing.
Disappointing comment. It is apparent that you have not subscribed to my channel for long and that you have never bought anything from me Colin. I say this not only because I have sold to a John, Kristen, Matthew, Sharon, Debra and many others but never a Colin Cunningham. This is why you "apparently" know nothing of my shipping times. This is likely because you haven't been on my website. Also, have you ever heard of that physics principle of a body in motion tends to stay in motion? This applies to people as well. You cannot please an unhappy person and a person who is overly jovial will not cry. Not to completely lay out who it is that you are 😉. And to suggest that I don't provide enough information? Wow. Now that I have helped so many others to read your comment, that is to say understanding its purpose, my only question is which one of those two groups is it that you belong to? Just in case you come back and reply with a comment about any further debate of these questions, I would like to help set something straight for you: when you were little, you're speak-n-spell was messed up. A tiny bird cannot make the sound of a fog horn.
*TLDR: I checked it out and failed to find evidence for any of the points or "criticisms" there were brought up.* Most of your "criticisms" are addressed in the video. Your first point, he says some people have no idea and it's their first time and have no knowledge and that is fine. Seems respectful of genuine inquiry. For point 4, I checked out the website to see what was there. The website has a page on shipping times, FAQ, and on checkout. For Question 5, if someone was new to internet and online shopping maybe? But I mean you don't do that for amazon, etsy, etc for online purchases from online only stores. Checking the website I did not see anywhere that stated this, but there is also no physical location and this was addressed in other videos. Regarding the Bill Gates comparison, he says "Now, I am not saying that I'm as big as them...".
You are ridiculous. I showed negativity towards you and you reacted negatively. You react negatively towards your customers and guess what…… No I have never purchased your flutes nor would I wish to. They are not exactly hard to make.
@@colincunningham9284 So you are not a customer, and never intended to be. You gave negativity-, tried to be hard-hitting, and were called out for how misinformed it was. After your attempt was completely deflated, you respond with "oh, you are disrespecting a customer". I fail to see how anyone else but you is the ridiculous one here Colin.

this is fantastic ! ---- only the strong survive ! the hell with the rest of em , must be why their is a gate at the end of my driveway ! keep the morons away ! thanks man !---------------------- i'm not alone .
😅
To question number 3, I am from Lithuania and I play make Native American flutes, and other instruments from that culture, I feel more connected to their instruments than my own land, my soul is from native America my body is from Lithuania :D and there is other part of me likes Mayan culture.
If you get a chance to, either read or listen to the audiobook Edgar Cayce's "the origin and destiny of man".
@@BlueBearFlutes i will, I will be actually listening when I am in my Worksop
@@POVMTB1 😀
I like you about 100 times more after seeing this video
By the way, I ordered mine a few days ago and I'd like you to take your time
Thank you my friend! The feeling's mutual! 😅
Your great! Just sayin….
Question 1 isnt ridiculous,
if there asking that then they probably havent played a flute before at all and its perfectly reasonable for them to ask that.
@@gamedog9542 you must be at least 54" tall for this ride 😄
You react negatively towards your customers and guess what……
No I have never purchased your flutes nor would I wish to.
Lmao
