  • Magnificent Ancient Redwood Forest - Long Version - near Crescent City, California
    Hike with us through the magnificent ancient redwood forest at Stout Grove in the heart of Jedediah Smith Redwoods State Park near Crescent City, California. It is known as the most scenic stand of ancient redwoods in the world. A plush layer of ferns and redwood sorrel carpets the ground below century-old trees.
    This sequence was captured May 30th, 2013 with a Canon HFS-100 and edited with Adobe Premier Pro 6.0.

      Thanks so much for watching and commenting on my video. What a great place to grow up among the giants and to have a parent who helped manage the forest! This is a wonderful corner of our world and your comments are special. Thanks for sharing! Dave in Montana.

    I used to enjoy camping at Jed Smith and always enjoyed crossing the river to see the Stout Grove. The Howland Hills road is very scenic and delightful. Back in the 1980's I was a regular Redwood tourist, I tried to see as many parks and trails as I could discover. I have so many fond places and this is one of them.

      James, I agree with you; fond memories. I am glad I captured some video to help me remember where I have been. It can't replace being there in person, the sights, sounds, smells, etc. but it is a good reminder. Special places exist all over. One just needs to explore to experience the beauty. Thanks for watching and commenting. Dave in Montana.

    I know the gentleman is likely just adjusting his hat after looking up at 5:28, but it almost looks like he is tipping his hat to this beautiful giant as he continues on his way. Made me smile :). These are the respected elders of this forest, after all.

    Thank you for the video, on the Giant Redwoods. About 5 years ago I planted two, of the smaller versions, that were reintroduced, from China in the 1940's, and they are called
    [ I believe] Meta Sequoia Gypsum. They are doing fine, and about 4 years ago, I planted 2 more, also these trees are doing fine. This past Spring, I planted 6 Giant Redwoods. I live on a small 20 acre farm, in Queen Anne's County, Maryland, on Maryland's Eastern Shore. Thank you again for your video.

    I was riding mountain bikes through there as a kid with some friends when that tree fell by the bridge in the beginning of the video. On of the scariest things I've ever heard. Carried our bikes over as it was still popping and snapping.

    • @davidegg22
      @davidegg22  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      WOW! What are the odds of that happening? Thanks for sharing your first-hand experience! I needed to shoot this tree stump since it was so large! The video does not show how large this tree was. My friend and I commented on how tall that tree must have been before it went down, and now I find out it was RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOUR EYES! Thanks for sharing your life-threatening, earth-shattering experience! Dave.

    I did a road trip from San Francisco to Seattle last August to conicide with the Eclipse. One reason was to visit the Coastal Redwoods. I went to the Humboldt SP, Prairie Creek SP, Redwood NP, Jedia Smith SP along the way, I was mesmerised. Truely one the amazing parts of our planet, just a shame 95% of them were chopped down.

    Great video and soundtrack. We live on the edge of Jed Smith Park along the Smith River in Hiouchi and spend as much time walking the park trails as we can in all seasons. If at all possible you should visit again during the rainy season in winter or spring when the rain forest truly comes alive. I was glad to see a few seconds of Mill Creek where it meets the river. We have a bunch of hangout spots along Mill Creek further upstream. Your love of the redwoods comes through the video and gave me big smiles to see how much you appreciate "our backyard". All the best.

      Your "back yard" is definitely one of my "must see again" areas of the country! You are so fortunate to live among the giants. We were only there a couple of days and I couldn't grasp it all. Living so close allows you to be one with nature, not just someone passing through. I do try to capture the essence of what I see, sometimes it works, other times not. I had a wonderful time capturing, editing and sharing your "back yard"! Thanks for taking such good care of it! Until I return, Dave in Montana.

      It was filmed in private forest land up near Smith River. The park's management would never allow that much activity in these kinds of groves or parks.

      ***** You meant your video, yes? My other reply pertained to OCDgamer which seemed to think Endor was filmed there, or maybe didn't know. Even California State Parks last year posted on FB that Endor was done in Jededidah Smith Redwoods. But the Return of the Jedi forest scene was in a privately owned old growth area near Smith River, CA

      sadly that was among many areas they logged in the 1980s
      the entire old-growth parcel they filmed ROTJ in got logged to bits not all that long after they filmed there
      it was on some private land
      sad thing is as recently as the 1980s and 1990s a ton of what very little left of the redwoods got logged

    Every video of the redwood forest plays music. I want one with forest sounds, not music.

    • @davidegg22
      @davidegg22  9 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Because of your comment, I went back to the original source video and listened to the sounds of the forest. What I heard in most scenes was dead silence, no birds, no wind in the trees, no animal sounds; just dead, lifeless silence. In a few scenes I heard people talking, the noise of my camera equipment, a jet airplane overhead, a car horn honking, me talking to my friend, my friend’s camera shutter noise, and the sound of running water. As you know, I left the running water sound in the creek scenes because I liked it. If I did not dub in music that I though was appropriate for this production, it would have been an extremely boring video. This forest was not as “lively” as one would expect. I feel the sound track added a lot to this particular video. Thanks for watching and commenting on this video. Dave in Montana.
