  • People don't always realise that Orkney is made up of a number of islands and outwith the mainland isle, the many other populated isles enjoy an even gentler pace of life and have much to offer whether you just go for a visit or you decide to stay. Find out more here.

A few years back, my wife and I spent a week bicycling around Mainland, Hoy, Rousay and Westray, we loved it and highly recommend Orkney for all those interested in archaeology and nature. It is a treasure.

Sounds like a lovely holiday, Jeffery, glad you enjoyed it. Although we don't fancy some of the hills in Hoy or Rousay on a bike...!

I visited Orkney in 1963 and 64 and spend lovely days with Mr & Mrs Spence of Kirkwall. I''ll never forget the kindness or the Orkney Islanders!

One of my great-great grandfathers immigrated to Canada from here, just before 1800. I wish to explore this branch of my bloodline someday.

    Thank You !!
We vacationed to Orkney (and Shetland) in the very early 2000's. There was virtually no internet back then so we based the entire trip on 3 lines of text in a hard copy travel guide that dedicated an entire 3 paragraphs to the Highlands and Islands.
This was easily the most memorable vacation of my life and we loved every second. We never got off the Mainland, but enjoyed so many spectacular hiking locations in the mid-summer light - forcing ourselves to end hikes 1:00AM to get some kip, and listening to the sheep all "night".
I would so love to return....

Lovely photography - It is great to hear how people love to visit - It is great to be an Orcadian - I'm one of these lucky ones.

I visited Papa Westray in the early 90's with my late wife and stayed with her sister and husband who lived and worked on the island, my wife's sister, Fiona, was District Nurse at that time. It is a beautiful place with wonderful scenery and a rich and historic culture. I have been longing to return for many years, perhaps someday soon.

I always thought I was Irish and South West Scottish but GEDmatch gave me Orcadian as my #1 closest ethnic group! I had no idea, now I'm on a quest to learn as much as I can.

My maternal grandfather came from Orkney at the beginning of the last century. Thanks to the on-line site Rousay Roots, I can trace that part of my family back to my 5th great-grandfather Magnus.

I'm told this is where my ancestors come from. I've never been there. The old stone houses are amazing to see and the thought that my ancestors may have lived in them is beyond imagination.

I was brought up in the most beautiful of all the Orkney islands...Westray...not called "Queen of the Orkney isles " for nothing. This film doesn't do it justice at all. Wonderful place to live. ❤

My family surname is Louttit. My great-great grandfather (all the way up the patrilinial line) came from these Orkney Islands (I don't know exact details). Not sure if his name either, but he came with the HBC. There's a spiral-bound book titled The Louttit Saga; I pray to G-d that I can find it in storage!

    • @buffylouttit7785
      @buffylouttit7785 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Almost forgot, this man came with the HBC in the mid to late 1800's and worked and settled in James Bay, in the Ontario coast of James Bay. His descendants are Cree indigenous people, including myself (I reside in Ontario) 😊✌️☮️

Don't believe the hype, Orkney is rapidly becoming a giant chavy council estate island (i was brought up in one so thats factual and not snobbish) , in a couple of decades it'll be like a mad max scene...be careful whilst travelling there. Rousey is nice though...

The stone of Setter "Probably the finest pre-historic stone in Orkney", dated to the Neolithic period which ended around 6500 years ago, PRE-DATING ADAM AND EVE, is that at all possible for a young-earth creationist baptist to accept, Cameron?
