This color educational film is a driver's safety film about city driving. There is no copyright at the beginning or end of the film so the date of the production appears to be the mid to late 1970s.
Opening shots of a car junkyard (:08-:43). Opening credit: THE IRON GRAVEYARD, a presentation of the National Safety Council (:44-:58). A junkyard worker talks about how cars in city life have so many distractions with signs, other cars, and regular life. Exits are tough for those not paying attention. The rules and regulations for speed and exiting an exit are explained. An example of what happens when you don't exit correctly is shown (:59-2:37). You must constantly pay attention: eyes left, right, ahead and behind. Sudden stops aren't the exception but the rule (2:38-3:23). Changing lanes is tough, do it like you mean it and pay attention. Watch for many clues that can provide you with information on whether or not someone is ready to pull out towards you (3:24-5:10). How to park. A man backs up his van - it is shown and explained how to do it safely. Intersections are discussed and then 4 way stops are explained and shown. What to do when you stop short at a red light and people cross in the crosswalk (5:11-7:03). Left turns and how to do them. Old people and children can cause problems crossing the streets - old people are generally confused (7:04-8:24). How to make a proper right turn with a big rig in the city. Don't give too much space on your right side or a small car or motorcycle might try to squeeze through (8:25-9:00). The cars wouldn't end up in the junk pile if people would follow these rules: keep a complete picture of traffic all around, pick your lane and stay in it, move with the traffic, signal to change lanes, treat parked cars like they are ready to move, watch out for pedestrians, be alert for stops. The junkyard employee knows how things can go bad from experience, his car is shown in the lot as well (9:01-9:45). End credits (9:46-9:52).

Back in 1980, when I was living in North Carolina, a friend of mine who was a volunteer fireman brought me to an auto graveyard that was enormous. He thought I was a careless driver. The blood, gore and mayhem was all on display in many of the cars. It changed my driving dramatically from that day on. I can still see those images seared into memory.

Yeah it's old, I had to watch this 45yrs ago when I started my first driving gig.
And it STILL holds true today, maybe more so because traffic has tripled since this was made.

I spot some 1976-1977 cars, so it's about that old.

I love old films like this - literate narration and a great soundtrack with real instruments. Easy on the eyes. I miss this era.

Hindsight being 20/20, the parts value in those yards is easily a few million dollars. So sad to see it turned into scrap. These films are awesome!!

jason9022 The looks haven’t. I remember we used to get our packages delivered by a truck just like that for a long time and it was only much later that I realized it must have been from the 60s or 70s and it was no longer then our Suburban and gasoline powered and manual when diesel and normally automatic was the norm and I’m taking about the mid 00s. How can you tell much about the UPS package cars when they keep the look consistent and don’t tell the public anything about them anyway? The only thing I could ever tell just by looking is that the older Diesels sounded distinctively Ford/International 6.9 .

I was thinking the same thing. Reality tv show build off get counts customs vs welderup crews.
Then start by rolling up with 2 cubes each of the same model car 1 engine and transmission each new the rest, heat and hammer time
I pay to see that !

Most of the license plates seen appear to be the 1976 Illinois Bicentennial plates (only used in that year-Illinois still issued new plates every year until 1979).

I'm going to say 1975 more likely 76. No "downsized" cars yet. But all have 5 mph bumpers. Another fast fact. No mention. Of expressway speeds, but there were 55 mph after Feb 74.

Some of this is confusing because of the Esso signs. Esso changed to Exxon in Jan 73. Therefore some could have been filmed prior or some could be from Canada where Esso station still dispense gas

"Package Car". They never called them "trucks", that way they could ignore the "No Trucks" signs in neighborhoods. Or so a former UPS manager told me.

At that time most cars weren't built as tanks, I can in remember 92 seeing a man in a Datsun 510 wagon get T bone by a Maxima in a severe seizure. It was a grime reminder when you open doors in a small sedan, how light they were and the least protection you had compare to the full size sedan.

It amazes me how some of the styling on the trucks hardly changed! Also I drive a little bobtail dump truck for my dad’s construction biz and it amazes me to no end how stupid people are and I feel like they have the right to cut me off, tailgate, brake check me and I really do have to watch out for everyone else and that part with the mixer reminds me how there is an on ramp right outside my house and people actually backup the damn thing because they are too stupid to read the signs!
