I was born and grew up in West Virginia. We had to go mountain driving to get there even if "there" was a park ten miles away.

Who else wants to go on a road trip now?

The highway slanted the wrong way, is called an off camber turn, and they are pretty common on Interstate highways, in the mountains. The curve goes right, but the road is slanted to the left. From where I sit, I know of two of those on a four lane Interstate. One near the bottom of a 6% 8 mile down grade through a gorge. If you are in the right lane, the camber or the slant of the highway and momentum, will carry you to the left. There used to be guard rail up there. but too many big trucks came off that turn too fast, and ended up in the creek 30' below. I know, I have worked that road, and we were replacing 300' of guardrail and posts every other month. They just put up a reinforced Jersey wall with a 5' footing. The trucks now rub up against the wall to bleed off speed if they have to for whatever reason.

No texting or cell phone use while driving also.

Didn’t mention seat belts anywhere. The Grim Reaper is in on that too, not just from drinking.

How did they drive without the help of their phones for texting while driving? The kids know how to do this real well now.

These were all Ford products. The two toned wagon, a '58 Ford. The blue wagon at home, and in the radiator fill scene, a '64. The convertible was a '54 Comet Caliente, a Mercury product. The car blocking traffic was an early 50's Merc.

The car they were passing with a honk of the horn was a '65 Galaxie convertible. The white State Route sign in the spade shape, was from 1956, to 1964. Before that it was a different shape and font, after it the signs are green spades, not white or black.

California? Colorado, Idaho? Anyone recognize any scenes?

    • @mt3311

The California SR 190 is WB from Quaking Aspen down into Tipton and U.S. 99 JWO Porterville in the Central Valley. I would say this video is from the mid 1960's, before the state got around to replacing the white signs with green ones.

teaches using engines to slow vehicles on down angle roads - mandatory knowing, but never taught. Headlight courtesy taught; road etiquette. None of these skills are taught anymore.

They look like rather wallowy cars for driving on mountain roads

Back in the day people used internal combustion vehicles and lost power at high altitudes while overheating...
