India isn't building. India has built world's largest database of citizens with finger print and even retina scan. While this is very efficient in providing services to citizens. Any authoritarian govt can misuse it. Still I am in support of Aadhar but with some restrictions on government. UIDAI should be independent body like election commission.

    1. The Indian government already has everyone's photograph(and other biometric details) with them, so the reporting that police are taking photos of individuals from their phones/tablets for DATA COLLECTION is bs.
    2. If this report was targeted towards the ruling party, then the reporters should know that police are STATE objects.(Please check the ruling party of Telegana)
    3. If a person intends no harm to the society or any individual, it shouldn't concern him if he is being watched or not. And most people fall under this category and nobody should have an issue if we are using the data to capture the few causing nuisance.
    4. DW should think about joining some good "Journalism" institutes to at least learn the basics of research in journalism.

      Europeans countries themselves doing this
The EDRi network has commissioned an independent report from the Edinburgh International Justice Initiative (EIJI) which brings together stark evidence of abusive facial recognition and other forms of biometric surveillance across the European Union (EU). The research shows that harmful biometric mass surveillance practices have become worryingly normalised by law enforcement, other public authorities and private companies in Germany and the Netherlands, with Poland starting to catch up.
This new evidence comes hot on the heels of the EU’s two top privacy watchdogs, the European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) and European Data Protection Board (EDPB), confirming that the EU must ban all automated recognition of human features in publicly accessible spaces, as EDRi has long argued.
      A chilling set of revelations
The report shows that across Germany, Poland and the Netherlands, biometric systems are increasingly required for accessing public services, travel, shopping and other everyday activities. As a result, people are being given the false choice to either submit their sensitive data, or be excluded from society.
In one example, the report exposes how Dutch police have allegedly used financial incentives and ‘dark patterns’ to encourage people to share private surveillance footage with police for biometric analysis, as a way to evade current national laws.
“The faces of 1 in 12 citizens in the Netherlands are in the massive database of the Dutch police often without any justification. There are multiple cases where, under the guise of experimentation, legal frameworks are pushed aside in order to turn cities into “Living” Laboratories and citizens into guinea pigs. Current regulations are not adequately protecting our rights and freedoms. These toxic and discriminatory biometric mass surveillance practices urgently need to stop!” - explains Lotte Houwing, Policy Advisor at EDRi member Bits of Freedom in the Netherlands
In Germany, the report shows that authorities in the city of Cologne have deployed facial recognition systems outside of LGBTQ+ venues, religious venues, doctor’s surgeries and lawyers’ offices without any legitimate justification. The disproportionate deployment of such technologies against certain marginalised groups amplifies structural oppression in society and limits people’s rights to express freely, move without fear and be who they are.

sure, if you are a citizen abiding the CURRENT rules you might have nothing to be afraid of. what if the rules change however? what if in the future the political climate in the country changes and a government comes to power with more radical views, views that you might not agree with. and what if that government then starts to persecute its political opponents? Suddenly this massive amount of surveillance data can be used to oppress minorities and people with differing political ideas, like you. you don't even have to think of that drastic of a scenario. you might someday be judged for your past archived actions, which at the time were considered fine, but now are against the law or are deemed unacceptable based on new rules that you might not agree with. not even speaking about how a system like this prohibits societal change and creates a climate of fear because everyone speaking out against the status quo does so with much greater risk to themself. large scale surveillance is prone to be abused and must be kept in check and under regulations.

Surveillance is absolute necessary in country like India where there are lot of people. Without surveillance there can't be any law enforcement and ultimately citizens will blame government if any anti social activity happens. It is the duty of government and police to track down anti social elements, solve crime as soon as possible. Don't try to make horror video on this. This is happening in India for a long time time. And this is why we are safe here.
