  • The American Football League (AFL) was a major professional American football league that operated for ten seasons from 1960 until 1970, when it merged with the older National Football League (NFL), and became the American Football Conference. The upstart AFL operated in direct competition with the more established NFL throughout its existence. It was more successful than earlier rivals to the NFL with the same name, the 1926, 1936 and 1940 leagues, and the later All-America Football Conference (which existed between 1944 and 1950 but only played between 1946 and 1949).

Mike Garrett (2:51) of KC was ultimately traded to San Diego in 1970 after he apparently got into an argument with HC Hank Stram over a "ping pong" game. Stram was known to be a difficult coach to deal with but the loss of Garrett really upset the morale in the Chiefs dressing room as he was very well-liked

On the opening day of the following season, the Vikings destroyed the Chiefs 27-10. Having more time to prepare for the Chiefs offensive formations and now having played them in SB 4 the Vikings were able to essentially pressure Dawson into 2 INTs and RB Mike Garrett's crucial fumble led directly to a TD
