- The Barbary lion was considered one of the biggest lion subspecies. They had dark, long-haired manes that extended over the shoulder and down to the belly. It is said that they developed the colors and size of their manes due to ambient temperatures, their nutrition, and their level of testosterone .

@@realtalk3567 agreed, I love documentaries about lions my best documentary was the MAPOGO LIONS.... Although I love documentaries sometimes I see or dream of lions attacking me and one of my most scary dreams is being attacked by loins... But I still watch lions documentaries... But I will never think of these animals as beautiful they are scary but interesting at the same time. If they get an opportunity to attack anyone they will do it... And forgive me for saying this... I myself if ever encounter any lion face to face I will shot first & ask questions later.. Life is about Sarviver.
@@imohbalu I mean don't get me wrong. Lions are certainly dangerous and will eat you up at nearly any chance they get. But other animals like a blue-ringed octopus or a poison dart frog are also dangerous yet you can't deny their inherent beauty. Lions are beautiful majestic creatures that should be respected at all times especially due to their danger to humans. If one does run up on you it just well might be best to have to defend yourself by any means necessary.

There was a Barbary lion named Simba, who was the largest known lion ever. Per Guinness Book of World Records, He weighed 825 lbs. and was 9 ft. 8' long. He lived in a Zoo in the UK. He lived a long time for such a huge lion, he died at age 14 in 1973.

Recently in the Rabat zoo in Morocco there was the born of 5 barbary lions cubs.

Yeah, but there are less than 100 in the wild, specifically in Morocco. If they're brought back to the wild, they could get hunted and become extinct fr if they're not. They should be preserved. Some people would still hunt. It's safer for them this way, unfortunately.
Their manes are so majestic. I've seen lions both in person & obviously here on TH-cam but I've never seen ones this big. These are massive😮

I watched a lot of videos about the legendary Mapogos and Sekekama, but these Barbary Lions are the most beautiful lions I've ever seen in video.

With the Barbary Lion I have not read anything about a maximum weight: Maybe the weight of a male Armur Tiger for example? What do you think, how do you estimate the Mapogos in comparison?

These lions' original home is the Atlas mountains of Morocco, that's the only place in the world where you could have found them when they were still roaming the earth (Barbary means from the land of the Berbers / The Barbary horse for example was very famous among the British nobles in the Elizabethan and Jacobean era, and they brought them from Morocco. It is good to know that Shakespeare mentioned the Barbary horse in his plays Henry The Fourth part 2 and Othello).
As late as the early fifties the Barbary lions were spotted in the wild, and we have a picture taken from a helicopter in the Atlas region of Morocco, dating back to 1945, which clearly shows a full grown male lion crossing the mountain pass. The sad truth is this; the French colonizers, with the help of some locals, used to organize big hunting expeditions and hunted these majestic beasts down to the last one.

Fun fact, because a Lion's roar sounds like a hybrid of a motorbike starting, a bear yelling & a dog barking, the iconic roar we associate with Lions thanks to that one production company that uses a Lion roaring as their logo actually belongs to Tigers, because Tigers have a more intimidating roar & a concept of vengeance which makes me understand why the Lion is only the King, but a Tiger is called an Emperor.

But for me the Siberian Tiger is the ultimate big cat. It oozes power and incredible ferocity.
It is the 2nd would be a Bengal Tiger then the Barbary Lion. But there was once a lion called the American Lion and it was bigger then a Siberian tiger. But today cats tigers have the edge especially the Siberian or Bengal. All felines are beautiful though from domestic cats to tigers. Better yet all of God’s creation is beautiful.

Tigers are solitary hunters and have very little reason to ever fight something as formidable as a lion for little reason. Lions however have to display dominance and kill other males to have offspring and since they can have females hunt they can afford injuries….

Tigers can comfortably balance on their hind legs and strike with both front paws. Lions can only strike with one paw at a time. The emperor is without doubt the mightiest of the cats.
