We could not believe that we found the missing portion of this incredible Tapir Jaw! And we are even more psyched to loan it to the Crystal Springs Foundation for thousands to enjoy! :)
@@DiggingScience Back then it was almost unreal....A lot of human stuff...Aerro heads, bones of all kinds....We went into other places where we were told not to go....But that was a long time ago now...Stay safe my young friend....Thanks...!
I know the feeling. A few years ago I found a nearly complete antiquus skull with associated radius/ulna and humerus. A real big old male. I keep going back but haven't found any more. Keep up the good work. You never know what's gonna wash up.
steve shoemaker I remember mom and dad back in the early 70’s in Cadiz Kentucky would go off in the woods with their friends and tell us kids not to follow them because they were gonna go look at the Indians in the cave but we thought they were going to smoke weed instead. Years later when I grew up I got curious and went back to that spot with a friend and there had been Indian remains there but Murray State University had beat me to it and removed everything. They found one adult female in there with an unborn baby and several other remains and all kinds of tools and weapons of their time. There’s no telling what’s undiscovered out there but I’m getting too old almost now. I’m glad this young man is out hunting the way he does. Pretty soon he’ll have enough to build his own mastodon.
It seems crazy that you could find associated bones and after such a long period. It gives me hope as I am looking for the other half of a fossil at one of my spots 😊 Great videos, keep them coming!
I'm from New Zealand and would love to know what a skechwack pond is and why you must avoid it? It's not a term we are familiar with. Could you please explain?
Something that is "sketch wack" must be avoided. They are typically home to gators and full of mud and other undesirable critters large and small. We avoid any and all sketch wack ponds.
"Sketch-wack" ponds...sounds totally legit! Awesome finds! The Fossil Gods were with you and you found the missing piece--wow, what are the odds! Sorry to put so many exclamation marks in one paragraph, that's grammatically incorrect, but I couldn't help myself. Well done!
Thank you for being my future inspiration to get out from the Naples bars to want to get into the history of our lands. I already explore Calusa Indians, but want to venture the fossil hunting in Florida.
That heart shaped vert is manatee. Found an entire modern skeleton of one which is great for reference and fossil comparison. Had to leave Florida early due to covid so your vids are really appreciated.
That was our initial thought and still might be. But, we've found a few manatee and dugong verts before and this one has the wrong mineralization for it and is too porous. Their are a few vertebrae from the ice age that also have the heart shape as well. (Pretty sure horses are good example). Really glad you appreciate the videos!
I think I heard you say that you donate stuff to a museum. Where does the good stuff end up? I always just donate anything I find to UNL if they want it. Just curious.
You really are lucky to live in such a beautiful place I live up in Michigan we have cool thing like glow in the dark rocks and Petoskey stones along with shells but we don't have sharks and ice age mega Fauna so being able to live next to this is awesome I live next to lake Michigan so I have access to the cool rocks and small fossils I also wonder how much of the Mastadon have you found
Are all your hunts associated with private property? I just got into looking for fossils since I’m a central Florida native but with the regulations on state parks etc it’s incredibly difficult to find locations to go. What tips do you have for that? I’m sure you’ve encountered the same dilemma.
The Florida Fossil Permit applies to any Public River you can float a kayak in as long as its not within the bounds of a state or federal park! That leaves most Florida waterways huntable!
Great question! Skulls are comprised of quite a few different bones and due to the nasal and cranial cavities, the bone doesnt have a lot of support so skulls tend to break apart and get destroyed by the river.
@@DiggingScience I'm 52 and I'm still using the legs that I have to fossil hunt. I think you'll have many decades ahead of you. After literally years of wanting to get my fossil permit and go to Florida I finally have a permit. The sooner this virus crap is put behind all of us the sooner I can go to Florida and hunt for fossils that I've wanted to do since 09. I've fossil hunted all over the world since I was 8 and will continue til my legs give out or some other part of me does.
We do loan a lot of finds and donate any that are scientifically important. We feel happy to contribute to the public's appreciation of these discoveries. But we do miss them!
LOL, don't worry, Derek, my boys had to explain to me, I'm an old geezer. "Sketchy" is anything that's possibly dangerous, scary-looking, etc. "Wack" is probably similar--my son is a big online gamer and he uses both words a lot. IMHO, that pond likely had a gator or two in it.
@@Doxymeister I'm not all that old. But I know slang changes a lot from state to state so wasn't sure. But I assumed it meant dangerous life was likely in them

Please explain just what a sketch wac pond is, how it forms, and why you avoid it?
Yes, please!!
Maybe it's a predator trap.

Thank you! It is one of a kind!
(Can’t wait to see more adventures!) really enjoy the naming on the screens but maybe add pictures of the animals too.
Thank you! We will just need to make sure we avoid copyright infringements!
The copyright is a problem and there are plenty of animals that dont have PaleoArt :(
Keep up with the humor and silliness 😂😂😂it makes the videos fun!
I love the fact that you donate your finds for other people to see.
Great videos, what a fun thing to do. I also love watching Nicola White, mudlarking on the river Thames.
Woww! Thats sick man! Go one like this!!! 💪 Its good too see you found al the pieces!
It looks so good put together!
Cool hunt . Congrats on finding the final pieces on the tapir jaw. Thx for sharing and I am looking forward to your next hunt.
Thank you! We look forward to sharing the next one with you!
It's incredible to me guys how you figure out what type of bone that is! In many cases, I would not distinguish the bone from a rock.
Fantastic that you found the rest of your tapir!
Congrats on completing the jaw. Hugh alligator tooth!
Awesome glad you found the piece of the jaw, sweet
We were so psyched. It looks great put back together!
Thank you for another awesome video
Jonathan, that was an awesome find and you certainly have had a lot of luck in your honey pot spot.
Thank you for sharing your adventures! From England!😁😊👍
Can't wait to start documenting my finds this year, thanks for being such a inspiration ! Killer finds !!
So what I’m taking away from this is to keep a look out for a video in 3 years that’s titled “I found the skull!”
We REALLY hope so!
Amazing you'd find that jaw over the course of 3 years!!! Wow.

actually Michigan does have a bunch of fossils in the upper peninsula and in the mainland areas. you should search up some fossil beds in your area
The feeling will remain forever.
I think I'd still be afraid of the alligators even with the precautions, but really cool stuff.
Where do I find the video on how to fossil hunt in Florida? I’ve done 700+ hours with UF. But never on my own. My best find was a baby gomp tusk.

@@DiggingScience Oh yeah, I knew that but like in this video you aren't paddling in, you're hiking in.
i promise you, youre going to complete that mastodon skelton one day
How do you manage to carry all of that stuff back to your car ?
Hi
Interesting bone yard
hi
When you find a fossil in water what is the best way to dry it without damaging it?
Dry it slowly surrounded by a moist towel while monitoring it.
Why so many mastodon teeth, and not huge bones?
What's the most complete skeleton u have, and about how much of it is complete?
You don't really see many skulls in these videos were the skulls over collected or damaged from the river
Great question! Skulls are comprised of quite a few different bones and due to the nasal and cranial cavities, the bone doesnt have a lot of support so skulls tend to break apart and get destroyed by the river.

💜
Hmm similar to wild hog 🤔 I have a skull with teeth I found i thought was pig. After seeing this im not sure now.
nice
Damn that has bone
The stillshot on the opening picture looks like sweat glands
How many times have you been snake bitten?
Not many. More when I was a kid on my family farm actively looking for the snakes haha!
Just from a very small piece of bone, he can identify from what animal specie it.came from !
What do you mean by sketch
your young and strong so keep hiking to find those fossils cuz mineral hunting will NEVER compare.
We plan on it until these legs give out!
