I grew up in a family where my mother was a stickler for displaying 'things' with a story behind them. Today I have some of those 'things' and am grateful for the stories. I love the natural look of Marie's arrangements, I prefer the colours, greens, white, pale pastels, to the brighter colours you find in some florists arrangements. Beautiful.

Don't know how or when I started doing floral arrangements, just started with "filler" in a vase or bowl and then began adding whatever flowers were on hand. Was emboldened when living in Upstate NY since the roadside weeds and wild flowers were in such abundance - and free! No waste, and "mistakes" were quickly forgiven and corrected. Half the battle was the security of abundance and not worrying about doing it "wrong".

The table looks beautiful. We eat Christmas Dinner in the Conservatory. I once turned it into an ice palace using cellophane printed with snow flakes at the windows with blue lights behind. Fake snow blankets pinned to the curtains. The children loved it and now adults, still talk about it.

i have mixed feelings about it actually. I think i would prefer to see them safe, displayed in a Museum in Cambodia. Unless they were not used by the Royal Family, and never actually sent to Cambodia.

But these plates were looted from the Royal palace in Phnom Penn probably during the Khmer Rouge regime or the Vietnamese invasion that ended it, and found in the late eighties on the flea market there. They probably date from the forties or early fifties and were among hundreds if not thousands of pieces from the palace. Others from the same market have no doubt ended up in Cambodian houses. Some may even again be in use at the palace today. Who knows what was recovered. In any case, I have little doubt that Cambodia and the royal family are more interested in safeguarding the rich and ancient Cambodian heritage than in, what are after all, remnants of the times of French colonialism. King Sihanouk returned to reign until 2004 when he abdicated and his oldest son, Norodom Sihamoni was crowned.

In America, we call the bridal veil flower baby’s breath because it is delicate and precious. It is often used in wedding arrangements here.
