Daan Roosegaarde uses green lasers to showcase the "beauty" of wind turbines

  • Dutch designer Daan Roosegaarde has turned a group of wind turbines into a light installation by connecting the structures with moving laser beams.
    Roosegaarde and a team of designers and engineers created the Windlicht installation at the Eneco wind farm in Zeeland, in the Netherlands, to "show the beauty of green energy".
    Roosegaarde designed software that would allow a green laser projected from one turbine to follow a blade on the turbine next to it.
    A tracking system predicts where the blade will be, then sends a signal to the hardware attached to the centre of the turbine - allowing it to adjust according to the strength of the wind and speed of the rotations.
    "We wanted to bring a positive dimension to green wind energy, and to add a playful and poetic dimension to our landscapes," Roosegaarde told Dezeen.
    "We took inspiration from the cultural heritage of Kinderdijk in order to show how nature and technology can create a symbiosis," he said.
    The Dutch village of Kinderdijk was declared a world heritage site in 1997 by UNESCO thanks to its 19 traditional wooden windmills dating from the 19th century.

    how musch energy is needed to run the lasers? The lasers require energy. They are a form of light pollution that interferes with night sky viewing. I doubt these would be allowed in the city for the same reason, and because they would interfere with aircraft and safety lights, and if stared at, impair one's vision.

      Damn, you must be the lighting center of every party. This was a project for a few weeks only. There are cities in the world with millions of people and nothing being done to prevent light pollution and you pick one small beautiful project to pick on, in a country that does a lot to prevent light pollution. Directional light, absorbing roads, roads with sensors that will switch on the lights only when someone is present and so on. The creator of this temporarily installation has done a lot to reduce light in many many other projects or even make them obsolete. He came of with a lot of ideas to reduce power and use alternative energy sources. Therefore WIND power. The lasers are on WIND TURBINES for gods sake. And you are seriously asking about how much energy is needed. Some people just don't think and go straight to bashing because it's negative in their opinions. Now go and switch of the lights at your home, which is most likely powered by a nuclear power facility.

    That could be OK in a city, but these things are rarely put there. They mostly just ruin the countryside. Rural areas should be free of technological braggadocio.

      @@jenniferjuniper97 lasers are the most efficient form of light, this is true coherence. These lasers are used in cities, often, and safely.
