I don't own this machine, and most of my quilting and stitching is done by hand - so far!, but I still enjoy listening to you and learning something new each and every time. Truth be told, you are a breath of fresh air and we all benefit from your kindness ❤🥰🫖🌟

Thank you so much Jean! I have this machine and have used it several times for straight line quilting, but because of comments I’d read online I’d be hesitant to try FMQ. So thanks for doing all this leg work for us!!

Jean, I had a love/hate relationship with my jazz 2. After about 4 years, and many many quilts I just bought a new Janome with an even bigger throat! Your settings are spot on…..the most important part being that tension set at 9. Even that eventually became a problem for me. My service man suggested a second bobbin case set with a looser tension to be used only when FMQ. He set me up with that and she was fine for probably another year or so. Basically it was an amicable divorce. - I’d decided to not put anymore money into keeping her happy. Anyway, if down the road you run into problems again, you might think about an alternative bobbin case. Good luck! K

I also have a JazzII and have had nothing but problems. I am not going to put any more money into it. What kind did you get

@@lindaunderwood8494 I bought a Janome Continental M6. They had a really great Holiday special going on. The Throat is 13.7"!

My retailer told me that Coats and Clark thread is terrible for my Baby Lock machines (I have 3 but not a Jazz). They said using it would land my machine in the repair shop more quickly. I don’t know why, but I don’t need that! I mostly use Metrosene as that is what my local sewing center sells and approves for Baby Lock. My Accomplish straight stitch machine also has the large throat and a free motion foot. I have not tried it yet but wouldn’t be surprised if your settings for your Jazz are similar for the Accomplish. At least it’s something to try if needed. Thank you for the info!

If you’re FMQing on ANY machine, regardless of brand, age, model, features, etc., you should set your stitch length AND width at zero with zero presser foot pressure. You should always drop or cover your feed dogs. This is a no brainer. Why?
Because YOU are the one determining how fast or slow the fabric/quilt moves under the foot, as well as the direction. YOU also determine the speed of stitching by how hard you press down on the foot pedal. If your machine has a speed control function, this is a wonderful aid to use because you just set it at a comfortable speed for you and step down on the pedal all the way. Basically, you’re using the foot pedal as an on-off switch.
You want the FMQ foot to glide freely over the quilt, but at a height just above the fabric - approximately between 1/8” and 1/4”.
The most noteworthy setting that Jean mentioned was her tension setting of 9, which is quite high. THIS is the variable that will differ from machine to machine.
CAVEAT: If you have a stitch regulator of some type with your machine for FMQing, then use the settings recommended by the manufacturer. This may involve setting your stitch length at something other than zero. I have an older Bernina with the stitch regulator, and it requires me to set the stitch length at my preferred length for FMQ, e.g. 3. I rarely use it because the throat area is so small, and I typically make Queen or King sized quilts for gifting.

Once I got my tension set, I kept it right where it’s at and no issues so far.
