My nephew went to represent SA, in springboard colours, in Portugal Latin American Dance competition and we as a familyhad to raise every cent he needed for that trip. So I am very happy about the decision Gayton made 🎉🎉🎉

I know exactly how you feel as well...Last year,a couple kids from our community were selected to play in a soccer tournament in Spain...We all asked the department to step in and help with the funding,they said "There is no money"...Thanks to God,the community came together and helped raise the money for the 3 boys.

It's is the right thing the Minister done. I'm not against super fans, but use their own money to be a super fan. Parents should pay thousands of Rands when their children has to play for their province without a cent give by Sport department stating their is no money to help for their accommodation. Let very super fan pay his own way or watch like I do on the TV at home
So many talented deserving kids have fallen out of sports because they got no funding & their parents got tired of always trying to get funds.
Even the internationally! We held the International angling competition in April and the guy representing SA was complaining about funding his own trips but when he won SA was praising him but still no money towards his ventures representing the country

My dad got his Grand Master's Springbok colours, and the compo was in Namibia (SA won). My dad also had to pay for everything- flights, accommodation, the gear he HAD to wear, etc,

@ashlouw5350 fax, sports is one of the best tools to get academic sponsorships and learn discipline. It could help alot of poor communities if they set up sport programmes
I am glad there is no more hand outs. They must spend their own money. My daughter is getting married overseas where she live and work, I cannot go to the wedding, I don't have the money or a full time job. Maybe I should have ask the minister of travel to pay for me😂

HOW, HOW??? Do you have a budget for “Superfans” if you do not even have facilities to develop athletes from grass roots, no infrastructure in any community. Local community facilities are sand pits with no equipment. So what struggle is it to even reach national athlete level? What the heck is a super fan anyway when the athletes are sidelined? Are we watching superfans now? Get the basics right!.

There are many super fans in South Africa that love cricket, rugby etc. They have to go watch it in a pub, bar or at home if they lucky enough to have dstv as they can't afford to fly over the world to go watch and support! So these looters shouldn't be allowed to go, they should go work and pay for tickets and hotels out of their own pockets! Some people's kids in sports etc get to the level to compete in another country but the club doesn't pay for their tickets and accommodation they have to pay it themselves, the government doesn't pay for it. So I fully agree with Gayton! He should have been president because then he would have had the power to pull every department right and lift out the corrupted in every department! I always voted DA but this year I took a chance to vote for him, I'm just disappointed that more people didn't vote him to power! If he keeps this up, I hope the next election he is voted in as president!

Invest more in our athletes and less wasting of limited funds to show of worthless fans that claim that the team or individual won because the superfan were there. If the superfan want to go great, but let him/her pay for their own little holiday and not the government, this type of corruption has been going on for too long.

I agree with Thembekile. It makes sense to rather have a vetting process to send fans who make sense for the events they are sent for as well as limiting the number of people who can go.
I agree with Anele’s feeling that it was fine until posts of the fun and not the business were shared. Being sent as a fan is truly being sent as an ambassador of the nation meaning you are to show up as a good representative of the country and as moral support for the athletes. Not all the off the clock fun should make it onto the socials when said fun can potentially get the wrong kind of press.
I agree with Jason’s sentiment but wish to remind anyone who thinks similarly to him that the what gets done with our roads is an entirely different ministry and cannot fully be blamed on superfans being sent places. Complaining about a matter under one minster’s jurisdiction is but a happy distraction in favour of the other whom you should be addressing.
I agree with Cindy so much because I’ve witnessed as far back as the days of Fikile Mbalula’s rather famous time as the minister of Sport that a person tweeted something to the effect of how she had to fund her way to the Olympics and was not reimbursed for it. I know of a powerlifter who had to fund their way to Canada in 2015 the Commonwealth Games. That same powerlifter traveled UK last year through crowding funding where he and the team at large won multiple medals with some lifters breaking world records. It only makes sense that such efforts receive funding to make their travels a lot easier and as very little as the money to send super fans is compared the multitude of athletes, artists, practitioners and the like it does make sense to want to focus on sending active participants first before super supporters.
I remember Mama Joy's pics on Tv, teary eyes after a Pirate's game..Mama Joy, is a dedicated ambassador of sports in this country... Dedicated her life to sport...She should be the Minister of Sport in this country,...

There's no fence to be sitting on when it comes to this. There absolutely no need for tax payer's money to be used to send non-athletes or non-performers to events. There are more than enough who can attend to represent us in the stands and show up on camera for PR effect. If you looking for sponsorship for someone to support you lavish travels whether to attend sport or other, then raise funds privately or find yourself sugar to jet you wherever you want to be.

Best decision, use that money for our country to relieve us off debt and help improve facilities to generate income. People who can afford to travel when there are international events , they should raise our country flag high and consider themselves at their own cost as " super fans ".
Team thanks for the comments. Look at the super fans ROI “Return on Investment” ….. PR and marketing is a business that the results have to measured. Sportsmen are measured on performance that is how they get selected, the same goes for the marketing activities of the “Super Fans”. If Mama Joy is in an ad she will be paid, if she is finding export opportunities for South Africa , she is providing value , but if none of these things are happening there is no ROI. Put the money into the athletes . They need the investment , marketing and PR is not required , Hell the bokke don’t need the PR , so why send mama joy?
I don't particularly like the man but he is making a wise decision here. There is no need for these superfans. There are local museums which tell wonderful stories which need extra money from DSAC. Let's promote our cultural history and make museums exciting places for local children to visit...
