Every dance studio should play this for all their students.

@Egils Smagris, Excellent ! Except : it doesn't answer the question I have, which is: (1) what's the difference between backing line of dance and facing against line of dance? (2) in waltz, should a natural turn always be diagonal wall and a reverse turn always diagonal center, or vice versa, or ...?

Thanks Jonathon for appreciatin this video and for your questions. (1) Backing line of dance means that you move bacward in direction of line of dance. Facing line of dance means that you move forward in direction of line of dance. (2) In Slow Waltz Natural Turn Man starts with Right Foot forward facing diagonally to Wall (exception may be in some advanced routines). In Slow Waltz Reverse Turn Man starts with Left Foot forward facing diagonally to Center. There might be exceptions in some routines. Hope it helps.

@@EgilsSmagris Thank you Egils. Does the Natural Turn just "start" diagonal wall or does it continue on a straight path diagonal wall until its completion (and then perhaps a change step / progressive step, and then perhaps a Reverse Turn)? So if the ballroom had very long walls, from overhead the path might look like a zig zag - zigging Natural Turn diagonal wall then zagging Reverse Turn diagonal center?
Also I think you missed the word "against" in my question #1: what's the difference between backing line of dance and facing AGAINST line of dance?
      Thanks!

In Slow Waltz Natural Turn first bar (123) travels diagonally to wall, second part of Natural Turn travels down line of dance. Closed Change - diagonally to center. Reverse Turn 1st bar - diagonally to Center, 2nd bar - down line of dance. Closed Change - diagonally to wall. It looks like zig zag pattern, therefore slow waltz sometimes is called diagonal waltz.
In Viennese Waltz travelling is different - basically all figures travel down line of dance.
      (1) Sorry to miss this question. Facing against line of dance means that dancer travels against line of dance (simplest example would be step forward against LOD); backing line of dance means dancer travells in direction of line of dance (simplest example step back down line of dance. For some steps is difficult to decide exactly which is it - when step not forward or backward, but to side or closing of feet.

This is very useful! Thank you. Glad I found your channel. Egils, may I ask you to give some advice on how to do the Vien. Waltz left turn properly? When I do it with my partner, it require lots of space to make the turn, but you make the steps look so compact.

LsSuccesor, thanks!!! When you dance Reverse Turn in Viennese Waltz important is to practice to get around each other and gradually you develop skill to dance down line of dance and around even corners. Here is video of basics for Viennerse Waltz th-cam.com/video/NDenZ1rH6GU/w-d-xo.html
