    Hey thanks for the tour around your swiss collection. Nice one! Ps: I can tell you from personal experiences that the army still issues the P220 to their officers today. The P226 and Glock are issued to the special forces and mp.
    Keep up the good work! You need a Stgw 57 in your collection!

    This reminds me of a motivational poster I saw years ago about the importance of getting things right.. It shows Hannibal sitting on a rock with his head in his hands, while a soldier beside him, wearing fancy clothes, says, "We thought you wanted to cross the Alps with elegance."
    The Swiss are an example of what you can do with a tradition of fine skills combined with a desire only to say no to the squabbles of others.

    Eric, I didn't realize there were so many versions of the straight pull bolt guns. They are all beautifully elegant. I also never knew the Swiss had the Luger before the Germans. From one history geek to another, awesome video, one of your best and you have a lot.

    • @jimvandemoter6961

      Amy, I'm not familiar with that story. I'll have to look into it. Any suggestions as to sources?

    • @That_NJ_guy
      @That_NJ_guy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Vandemoter there are more straight pulls from different nations like the Ross rifle or the M95. The Swiss kept the design the longest but I have heard the Ross is just as smooth if not better.

    • @That_NJ_guy
      @That_NJ_guy 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim Vandemoter also yes they were the first to adopt the luger. The Swiss was extremely modern as a military in the early 1900s he'll even in the late 1800s the Swiss were very modern.

    K31 is my favourite rifle to shoot. It just shoulders so nice, great balance, and an absolute tack driver. still remember when I shot a sub moa group out of it with open sites at 100 yards. I was shocked. I've shot coyotes at over 200 yards with open sites. I even clean it with the same stuff the swiss army did. Just some rifles got that feel. And the K31 is one of them.

    As much as i know, the GP-11 is in use by the older men in our country. because we have a militia like army everyone who made the army training(RS) is haveing a gun at his home. They got the Rifle at home wich they trained on. For example my father has his Stgw-57. He uses it still for the mandatory shooting program.

    I REALLY REALLY AGREE WITH THE STANCE TO EDUCATE AND SHOW THESE OLDER FIREARMS !!!!! Eric you are so right. And I also agree about the quality, care, and pride put into these firearms by those that assembled them. I have NO belief that someone will pick up an AR and it will be in anywhere near the condition of my Snider MKIII conversion 142 years after it was built. Nor shoot as well. I'm biased, I own 5 ARs. 3 AKs. A couple of precision rifles. So I shoot modern arms and I'm a dam fine shot. But honestly I am just in love with my Peabody Martini, 1881 Trapdoor, the Snider MKIII, the Sharps, (and who does not just love an 1886 Winchester, 1895 Marlin 45/70) as well as a couple of custom black powders. I love them all from a mechanical engineering standpoint. Our ancestors were giants! They envisioned and built masterpieces. We are not "smarter" than they were.

  • @Toolness1
    @Toolness1 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    I have two 1889's and they will chamber and fire (very accurately) the exact same *cast* loads I use in the 1911, K11, 96/11, and K31. The throat is so generous that the brass doesn't need trimmed for cast bullets. With FMJ your pressures are a lot higher so you'll want to verify there's no bullet pinch going on as well as using 30-40 Krag data, but for me, extra trimming is not needed.
    I use a 180gr .311 sized powder coated wheel weight bullet over 19gr 2400 in a berdan primed GP11 case. Shoots cloverleafs at 50 yds out of all the Swiss rifles and seals perfectly in the 1889 with no blowback.

    The "Pistole 08" was adopted with the famous 9mm Parabellum in the German army in 1908 - correct. The Swiss brought it into service already in 1900, in cal. 7,65.
    But: The "Pistole 04" was adopted by the German Imperial Navy in 1904. It was also a Luger. They produced with some specifications only about 32.000 issues, mainly for the crews of torpedo boats and naval airships.

    You need to handle one to appreciate how well they are made, there can't be compared to any other service firearms, even custom production.

    Yes, the GP11 ist still in use but only for some Machineguns. For Sportshooter it is the best Option that we can get. On most of the outdoor Shootingranges are only allowed to fire with military Ammo. GP11, GP90 (the new one) and for Pistols only 9mm Para and the 7,65mm from the Luger. Only the .22 long is a special thing that's allowed. That's why there are not really much foreign Rifles used in Switzerland because we can't really use them on much Ranges.

    Have a Schmidt-Rubin, K31(sporterized by my grandfather, he was Swiss and bought several after he moved here), and an 1882. Didn't know it was an earlier model until watching the video, it has the plastic black grips. I even have ammo for it, but it doesn't fire, seems like light primer strikes.

    Great video! My family is originally from Switzerland and I so happen to be heading there next week. They're marksman as well as collectors/historians of their small arms. I wish we could get Swiss firearms here as cheap as they are available there. The P210 is the holy grail of coarse...I shot one there while visiting probably 10-12 years ago. Such an accurate firearm.

    The SIG P210-4 was a pure export version for the West German Border Police ( Bundesgrenzschutz) after the war. On this gun you see the serial with the "D" upfront indicating tie export to Germany and the german stamp right over the trigger guard. It was never adopted in this particular version into Swiss sercice. At least not officially......Some found their way into the German Army to military police units. It was called initially "Pistole Neuhausen" before getting desginated "P2". At some point they were called P49.....
    Deliverd between 1951 and 1954 at a price tag of 185,- DM...
    It differs from the Swiss ones with the delete of the lanyard ring and the addition of a loaded chamber indicator.....

      @Fred Billups Male citizens usually have to join the army. If you want to keep your rifle/pistol after your service, you need to participate at the "Feldschiessen"-competition for at least 2 times in the last three years along with finishing your mandatory 300m/50m program and have a standard weapons buying permit. The burst-fire/full-auto parts of the rifle will be removed and you are free to take your rifle or pistol home again. (You always had the weapon and equipment at home until your discharge)

    EDIT: They had ceased production between 1994 and 2015.

    Please correct me if I am wrong, but it seems that the significance of the “transitional rifles” has been misrepresented. The 96/11 rifle (which as you point out can be identified by the grafted pistol grip), was much more than a footnote in Swiss small arms history. Remanufactured from stockpiled 89/96 rifles, the 96/11 was actually the most widely produced Swiss long rifle chambered in the GP11 cartridge. By the year 1915 there were almost three times as many 96/11s in service as there were new production 1911s. Even after the Swiss ran out of 89/96 rifles to convert, production of 1911 rifles never caught up with the number of 96/11s already in service. Technically speaking, the 1911 rifles were actually supplemental to the 96/11s, which by their own right were the defining long rifle of the era.

    But what about the sig pro? It was the last weapon made by SIG in Switzerland in '98-'99. It's my favorite Pistole ever made. They were made in Germany starting in 2002 for French service and are now made in New Hampshire like other Sig Sauer Inc guns. Great Swiss weapon that most seem to forget, but yeah I salivate at the thought of Swiss-German engineering and how delicious everything they make is. So proud to own an SP2022.

    The 96/11 patterns got a new barrel and sights, and modified stock; they kept the expensive receivers and bolts :)

    Just a little correcture: there is no StG58, it is StGw 57.
    PE57 is a different variant but not the same rifle-> it's the civilian, semi-auto only variant and has the scope mounting tabs on the upper. 😉

    I'm a Swiss citizen and obviously I'm a shooter and love Swiss guns and rifles.
    I like Swiss pistols however I never use leather holsters. I store them carefully and use modern boxes to store the guns in. The reason? The leather of the holsters wears down the sharp parts of the weapons and makes the steel appear shiny, so do not use the original holsters if you want to preserve the "black" of your weapons.

    Eric you have a few things wrong, especially about the Luger. The Swiss bought the first model 1900 Luger from Germany (DWM). The later models were then produced in Switzerland (contract). So that the Swiss had the Luger before Germany is incorrect. The Luger was issued to officers in Germany from 1900. Also the P75 served all the way up to now and is slowly phased out and replaced by Glock 17. The Swiss Army never used Sphinx nor P226. However they where and are used by law enforement in Switzerland.

    AFAIK, P210 went out of service in the late 90s with the very last officers having it retiring. It was phased out as a Police pistol in the Seventies, to be replaced mostly by P220, P225 or P230 (and later by a mishmash of HK post-USP, Sphinx AT2000, SIG PRO, P226, and of course Glock). I've never heard of a Police adopting the Sphinx SDP as a sidearm, most Police forces Cantonal or local are switching massively to Glock pistols anyway, like the Army after the SIG PRO fiasco.
