My favorite long-forgotten part of New Orleans Square wasn't a place, but a person, Ernie McLean, who died in 2012. He was a great musician, and the last person ever Walt Disney personally hired for the park. You used to see him sitting on a stool, day-after-day, playing to passersby. Cool guy, the kind of guy that made Disneyland what it was.
I think it's a disgrace that they took away the Court of Angels, such a beautiful place of Disneyland, away from people who can't afford to fork over hunks of cash.
i miss the court of angels more than anything. my family would go there every time we visited disneyland. on my last trip while my dad was still alive, we took a picture at the steps. it’s a sweet picture and memory, but i miss the area so much
I feel like people are always in a rush to get on the rides they don’t take time to appreciate the architecture and attention to detail in the parks. Quite sad
Dark Dimensions Haunted House I agree with that, however last time I went to Disneyland we had so much time on our hands due to fast passes etc and the stuff we found was amazing. I’ve been 4 times and still managed to find new areas and hidden places around the park.
Kurtis Stoddard Exactly. The stuff in videos like this, it seems to me, is for people who have passes. For most people, half an hour spent exploring the back courts and details of New Orleans Square means missing another one or two rides in the park.
The opening of New Orleans Square was so exciting because it was a whole new land opening up on the heels of "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln," It's a Small World" and just ahead of "The Primeval World." It was such an exciting time at Disneyland. I'll never forget my first fritter and mint julep. I don't know how long it was before I found out that a "real" mint julep has alcohol in it. I used to love the One of a Kind Shop. You're right about the frustration over the Haunted Mansion sitting there looking so stately, yet a tiny bit creepy. All you could do was stand at the gate and wonder until August of 1969.
Your best🥰I’m heading “home” to Uncle Walt’s Park on September 16th...I’ll get my fortune told by Pirate Red. I miss Uncle Walt so much. You make his work even more vivid for this old Disneyland kid...I’m 67 and have been going to Disneyland for over 60 years...hundreds of times and I still learn nuances from you.😎💕🤙🏻👻
Great piece, you pretty much nailed it. For some reason I thought you were going to go into more detail about the original shops ( Arribas Brothers, etc. ) or the originally intended wax museum walkthrough, but no big, you still nailed it. Looks like you were in C33 around the time of "Summer of Tiki". Congrats. You got some great footage from the balcony as well. No matter how many times I've been up the new C33 staircase I really do miss the original entry, and am personally very irked that the Courtyard of Angels was taken away from the public. I knew several parents who had easily agitated kids that needed that as a "calm down" space to deal with crowding and panic issues.
Nothing used to please me more than just BEING at Disneyland, and looking at everything built so beautifully so long ago. That old magic has stuck hard with me.
That is sad to hear about the Court of Angels. Years ago; when I niece as only 7 (she's 40 now), I took her picture on the winding staircase. I also meant to go back with a proper outfit matching the time period, and photograph her again, parasol in hand. It never happened; as I never had the money to make it happen. Now to learn is closed off to the public is very sad news indeed. I will never again get to relive that moment; as I have no idea what happened to that photo
Wait what?! They have candles that smell like the water on Pirates of the Caribbean? You are right. New Orleans Square is the best. Haunted mansion rules, and pirates of the Caribbean is freaking awesome. I bought lots of art from the gallery above pirates years ago. It has cost me a fortune to get it framed.
Most of my childhood family photos are in the court of angels. I was hoping to do my wedding photos there when the day comes, but unfortunately it’s been incorporated into club 33
Lets see.... the fountain did work. I was married at the hotel and honeymooned in a suite for 4 days at the D-land hotel. We spent much of day one in that courtyard, being good Premium Pass Holders. You also didn’t mention that one of the doors in that courtyard was practical and was for Cast Members Only. The Hat Shop, Pieces of Eight ( Antiques ) were also great stores that had one of a kind merchandise.
I went up the elevator and snuck into club 33 about 20yrs ago . You could access that elevator from the entrance to that area you showed called angels square .. the elevator took me up to the kitchen .. when we got up there someone asked us what we were doing up there we said we were lost .. they nicely told us to get lost 😆
Love all your videos! I miss the Court of Angels. It was one of my favorite places I could take a break from the crowds. The Disney gallery was also one of those quiet, air conditioned areas most people didn’t know about. The Gallery would play classic Disney soundtracks by violin. It also had an outdoor courtyard that had red Brick, white walls and windows, and a small white working fountain.
I remember playing the Pirates pinball game in that arcade many years ago. This was back when the Starcade still had the whole floor dedicated almost solely to pinball machines. Not long after that closed was when the Pirates machine disappeared from that shop. That and the Indiana Jones machine in the shop in Adventureland were the last pinball machines I remember seeing in the park, and even that one was taken out a few years ago.
Thanks! I remember The Court Of Angels when New Orleans Square opened. It felt just as you describe it. Place of peace and quiet away from it all and somehow made the entire Land feel even more real with the architecture and stairway and flowers and lack of people in the secluded almost effectively private corner.
If you love the old Soarin Over California scent, Target sells this Signature Soy candle called Coastal Linen and it smells just like the old trip of scents mixed together like you’d smell when the show is done 😍
I was really lucky and got invited to club 33 a month ago. The court of angels was really beautiful, and the inside of the club was too. WOW! I didn’t even go in the Dining Room (because we weren’t dressed to the dress code) but just going in the lounge was amazing. For those of you who haven’t been the lounge at club 33 was added a few years ago and has windows looking down on the French Market and the New Orleans Train Station. It’s hard to see it from the outside during the day, but if you go through New Orleans Square at night and look at the second floor of the building by the French market you can see it thru the windows. That place is crazy and I hope one day I can afford a membership (but that probably will never happen)
We use to hit up Disney Gallery every time. We were serious Disney art collectors so, whenever we found out Haunted Mansion concept art was there we were there. The space was so beautiful and, the displays of art equally. When we bought a lithograph they would take you into a small room and they would wear white gloves while they showed you a litho for you to inspect for imperfections before you buy. If it’s all good they would have it sent to the front gate pick up booth. There was a woman named Barbara who worked there that we knew very well and, when the Gallery was moved to DT Disney we ran into her. She so loved working the old Gallery and, was miserable working in the new space. I know having new stuff at Disney is cool but, I think they made a HUGE mistake taking away the Gallery above pirates. I’ve met Marc Davis, Milt Kahl, Sam McKim, Ken Anderson all in that charming space. My Mansion art are my babies signed by each of these guys. I’m sure they’re worth a pretty penny by now but, I just love enjoying them for the beauty of what was to come or not come for the ride.
I love New Orleans Square! It’s by far my favorite part of the park. I wish that Haunted Mansion could get a queue to hold more people though without destroying the area by the water fountain. It’s one of my favorite areas to relax in. Pirates is my families favorite too.
...I remember that arcade... ...as a kid, my family visited Disneyland in the summer of 1968, and I got to play a bunch of those really cool arcade games (I was 8 years old at that time)... ...I wish they would bring that arcade back in some form or another, maybe even as a video game for the Playstation or XBox... ...it would be so cool to see those games again...
The Court of Angels was always a very special place for my Mother when ever we went to Disneyland we had to take a picture there and spend some time just soaking it all in. We would get our portraits done and have lunch at the Blue Bayou and then just stroll through New Orleans square enjoying everything we came upon. When I got older I would go to events at the Disney Gallery and We even watched Fantasmic from the balcony. I love these old parts of Disneyland and I miss them every time I go.
10:43 "Not a whole lot of people know that he still works." We went in 2018, in January... ...so many locals and AP holders... ...I let my daughter have her fortune read, and people around us marveled at the pirate. It was as if they had never seen him move before. We certainly hadn't, that's why we were there, but I found it funny how interested everyone else was.
Absolutely love New Orleans Square! From the food, the iconic rides, twists the streets, the classic smell of Bromine water in Pirates, the dusty smell of the Haunted Mansion, the shops...the list goes on. It truly is one of the most atmospheric lands in any Disney Park and the attention to detail is amazing. P.S.- There's a little matter I forgot to mention....Thank you, Dylan, for another awesome Disney video!
Oh Dear. Those stairs were my favorite spot in all of Disneyland. Used to be the mint julep and rest stop. I may never get back to Disneyland. But it will be easier now that I know I can no longer sit on those stairs.
I all ways liked to go down the back streets of New Orleans Square. I remember the Court of Angels I would go there to cool off. Thanks for the info. Have a great weekend.
We really enjoyed this one - that's where I used to work (Custodial Host, late 80s) and it's my favorite as well. I've never eaten there but I've been in Club 33 dozens of times... to clean the bathrooms. Proud to be a patron.
I really appreciate the amount of time, planning, and research that went into this! You are so full of facts and cool Disney stories, it would be amazing to do a walking tour of Disneyland with you. Disneyland needs to get on that!
This is so true. It’s the first land I try to go to. FYI- the Monty Cristo at Blue Bayou is amazing ! For those who have never had it-it’s a must try!!!
This is amazing! I grew up going to Disneyland from the 70s through the nineties, I had no idea the Disney Gallery and court of angels were remodelled! I have never been happier than I was just wandering those back areas of NOS, the court and the area just outside the gallery had the most beautiful hydrangeas you’ve ever seen. We used to watch Fantasmic from the balcony of the apartment, it was kind of a crappy view bc the trees blocked a lot of it, but if you went straight to the gallery when the park opened, you could sign up to sit in the tiny little VIP to watch. It was better than the Club 33 experience! I miss it more than humans I’ve known ♥️
There's no "L" in angels in French. The word is _anges_ Having said that, I really liked this look at how the experience has changed. It's as valuable a part of history as the rides.
Fabrisse ter Brugghe thanks for posting this! I thought I heard “angles” instead of “anges” as well, it looks like he misspelled “Angels” as “Angles” in English when he plugged it into Google Translate so of course we got “Angles” in French instead of “Anges” since the words are the same between the two languages. I was going to comment something similar 😆
Thanks for your video. The area between the Haunted Mansion exit and the NOS train station has always been a favorite place to sit and relax, with views that are unspoiled by commercialism and junk.
Yes! Ol' Uncle Walt was quite the tease when promoting a film or new attraction for Disneyland. It was the showman in him. There's also THIS to consider...time, $$$, & technology. All key factors to create a memorable Disney attraction and experience. Blue Bayou restaurant was Walt's answer (themed park food could include a 5 star restaurant) I did have the pleasure of visiting the Disney Gallery before it was removed. Even bought some nice souvenirs there.
I miss the Court of Angels. It was a really nice place to unwind and relax. My autistic brother loved it because of how quiet it was compared to the rest of the park. Now there’s not really any places where you can do that
You should’ve talked about the perfume shop! Hello ex Disney cast member here! The perfume shop is actually one of the original shops still open :) lots of VIP tour guides would go in to our shop because it’s a part of original Disney history still going on
Thank you for that nice trip through New Orleans Square. I do recall some of the items you pointed out like the staircase with the flowers. Being a kid I I would roll my eyes at that site and could not wait to go on to the next ride. I was fortunate that my parents took us to Disneyland most Summers when I was a kid. Yet I never heard of Fortune red or knew of the Pirates shooting gallery. One of my fond memories of the area was seeing two young black boys dancing and at the end pulling their hats off asking for tips. They were there just during the early years of New Orleans Square.
You constantly make videos about subjects I didn't even know I wanted info on. Then I become obsessed with the subject which leads me to all sorts of rabbit holes of mystery and fun.
I miss the Disney Gallery. We would watch Fantasmic from the balcony up there. So cool. They sold a dozen tickets at the beginning of each day. They served desserts and hot cocoa for the show.
Love your work. You single handily got me more interested in the parks and is the reason I'm gonna try to visit both U.S. parks this year. Keep up the great videos man🤙
Aaaaah the Court of Angels! That was so cool! It reminded me of those gardens and courtyards you see in New Orleans and I thought it was a nice touch to have at Disney!
Nooks and crannies are the best parts of the Disney parks, so it is a real shame that the Court of Angels is blocked to a vast majority of people. It kind of reminds me of something you’d see in the Morocco pavilion at Epcot, which is high praise.
I remember "The Pirates Arcade Museum", my buddies and I always stopped to play some games there, after we rode "The Pirates of the Caribean". The same as we always stopped at the arcade on Main Street to play all the vintage games. My girlfriend, now wife of twenty-nine years, bought a "Steem Boat Wille" print at the "Disney Gallery" back in the eighties, we also frequented the "Court of Angels" it was a nice rest bit from the hustle and bustle of our favorite land "New Orleans Square". We are both from So. Cal and so much has changed in the place we so often visited as a couple and with our now two grown daughters, my wife and I miss the old Disneyland.
I loved the Disney Gallery. I especially miss the shop that had authentic New Orleans items. You could get New Orleans pralines and Cafe DuMonde beignet mix and coffee with chicory.
I was sort of hoping your Court of Angels picture was the stick figure Dallin, haha. Would like to see a follow up video about the Teddi Barra's Swingin' Arcade in Bear Country/Critter Country and the Penny Arcade on Main Street!
Man, I want to travel back in time for a day and see old Disneyland. I know there’s pictures and videos, but I want to explore the nooks and crannies and taste the classic food.
Even as a kid my favorite part of DL was the ambience...and still is. NOSquare is the best expression of that, for me anyway. Gettin' pretty crowded lately though...
My favorite thing about New Orleans square that isn’t there anymore is you could hear voices coming from the balcony and hear conversations of the people who lived there. I’m not sure when it stopped, I’m pretty sure it was quite a few years ago at this point, but it was so delightful and fun.
They still play the voices via the upstairs speakers. They do the same thing on Mainstreet. last time you were there they must have been under refurbishment. Sometimes they’re hard to hear with all the background noise.
@@YallternativeFilms Must be all the background noise! I'll have to hang around there next time I have a chance to go by myself and see if I can hear them. Thanks!
For many years - long before it became the Disney Gallery - the rooms above Pirates' entrance were used by park operations as offices for the Japanese team from Tokyo Disneyland. Here the company trained them in how to run a Disney theme park (even as the visiting Asians worked in various functions of Disneyland) and prepared to create the first international WED Enterprises project.
I love that courtyard, that's now Club 33!! Beautiful!! I also liked the Pirates tune in the background. From the queue line music.🎶 Lol. Nice video!!👍🎥
Don't comment on videos hardly ever but your videos are the best Sir! Great work ... always look forward to them! My son and I will be coming from Colorado to Disneyland on the 12th - 18th this month ... can't wait!
I miss the Gallery sooo much!!! I spent a lot of time and money there! I wish it was still there. It was nice to be in Walt’s apartment to see all of the art work. You could really picture Walt in there. The view from there was also amazing.
Good video love the the story of New Orleans square I heard by a cast member told me at the old fashion Hirsch horse buggy in front of the haunted Mansion was used for Walt Disney's funeral
Bah! Both the Court of Angels and the art museum above Pirates became favorites of mine. Peaceful places to rest and savor a respite from a whirlwind day of rides, lines, and crowds. Cast members too often seemed more relaxed there, and initiated friendly conversations. Disneyland needs more such sanctuaries, not less.
I remember back in 2007 or so me and my dad went back into the court of angels and I sat on this stairs as we just took a break and relaxed for 15 minutes or so. It’s kind of sad it’s not accessible to the average guest anymore
Seeing this video gives me the desire to see a video on quiet places at Disneyworld and Disneyland (preferably Disney World, since I go to that park more often)
My favorite long-forgotten part of New Orleans Square wasn't a place, but a person, Ernie McLean, who died in 2012. He was a great musician, and the last person ever Walt Disney personally hired for the park. You used to see him sitting on a stool, day-after-day, playing to passersby. During 1994 I probably met him there. Sad to hear his destiny.
I think it's a disgrace that they took away the Court of Angels, such a beautiful place of Disneyland, away from people who can't afford to fork over hunks of cash.
This is the first I had heard of this since moving away from SoCal some years ago. Completely heartbreaking and obnoxious.
I love how you had to force yourself to not talk about the haunted mansion.
I love The Haunted Mansion, as well!
1:12 "Let me in.... LET ME IIIIIIN"!

Thank you for this comment 🙏🏼
Pllzzzzzz or I shall let hell out on you 😛

Premiere didn't quite work for some reason, but I hope you all enjoy the video nonetheless!
Offhand Disney Please post more often I keep missing you
Going to Disneyland in a few minutes finally after months blocked out! Perfect timing for a new video! Thank you!
That’s ok man! This is awesome love your work !
Offhand Disney you need to upload more
That's alright. I actually don't care for the Premiere feature. If it helps your views, go for it. Otherwise, I'll stick with the bell.
Neat video!
Absolutely love the old film from the parks. I'd rather stay in the dream suite than Cinderella's castle.
Sounds cool
You can stay there for food and to watch the fireworks!
Terra Lyrics already done haha
PSA!!!!
the splash candle smells much more like the bromine water than the pirate candle!!! IMPORTANT!!
Blaine Dunn That’s good to know, I honestly thought the pirates candle smelled awful.
I already got the pirates :c
that’s amazing!!! That they captured that in a dang candle! What does the pirates one smell like then?
kuramasan more tropical
I was about to buy that one but couldn’t find reviews on it so thanks!

Having said that, I really liked this look at how the experience has changed.

I wish the Court of Angels was still open to the public. It looks beautiful!
I loved the Disney gallery as a kid! I spent hours there looking at the art and picking out the print I’d get to buy each year. It was delightful!
You should’ve talked about the perfume shop! Hello ex Disney cast member here! The perfume shop is actually one of the original shops still open :) lots of VIP tour guides would go in to our shop because it’s a part of original Disney history still going on
Just wanted to say I love your videos so much! They always make my day!
Another cool video. There are so many little known gems to visit in DL. I hope they aren't forgotten. Your videos keep them alive!
Just got my magic candles! Thanks for the discount!
This reminds me of the arcade that use to be at the exit of Space Mountain. That's where I had my first interactions with the Tron arcade video game.
I miss the court of angels. Sigh. New Orleans square is my favorite area as well.
I miss the Disney Gallery. We would watch Fantasmic from the balcony up there. So cool. They sold a dozen tickets at the beginning of each day. They served desserts and hot cocoa for the show.
I love the fact that I got to see so many of the Disney Gallery exhibits
You always do such a nice job with your videos! Brings back lots of memories.
When we went to Disneyland back in the day, and before The Haunted Mansion opened, my dad told me its where Walk Disney lived.
I love post cards
They are usually inexpensive and are fun to collect. They can make neat accent room art.
Love this video, I work at Disneyland inside the New Orleans’ stores and love that people share my interest in it’s history ❤️☺️
Bud, your videos are the most satisfying things I have watched in a while. Keep it up with the great content!
Even as a kid my favorite part of DL was the ambience...and still is. NOSquare is the best expression of that, for me anyway. Gettin' pretty crowded lately though...
I remember when that apartment over Pirates was open with all the artwork. I loved that.
Thanks!
Wow! That's so much better than the sounds that come from the balconies in real life New Orleans! DisneyLand really is magical!
I remember going into the arcade after riding Pirates of the Caribbean. I had a blast there.
My son and I will be coming from Colorado to Disneyland on the 12th - 18th this month ... can't wait!
one of the best videos i've seen for a fan like me. i didn't know any of this stuff! thanks for the info. it's very appreciated
i hear that pirates of the caribbean ride queue music love it used to listen to in class on a loop it’s good to study to
Thank you so much. I had no idea about this area! You know such interesting information!
I've been to the Disneyland Gallery's original New Orleans Square location back in 2003 when it was Haunted Mansion themed.
Stunningly done! Thanks Dallin!
You uploaded this as I was watching princess and the frog. Talk about the timing!
There is a tiki bar in my hometown that boasts a huge fish tank. I like it mainly because it(the bar) smells just like Pirates of the Caribbean.
... where's you're hometown and what's the name of that Tiki bar?...
...I like to check it out! 🗿
I always learn something new when I watch your videos!
Red and Shrunken Ned are my favorite
I would love more videos like this for different areas in the parks/ Thanks for sharing!
I remember back in 2007 or so me and my dad went back into the court of angels and I sat on this stairs as we just took a break and relaxed for 15 minutes or so. It’s kind of sad it’s not accessible to the average guest anymore
The video quality was great Dallin
I miss Court of Angels💖 It really was a nice place to get away and we took tons of family photos in that spot
I loved the Disney Gallery. It was horrible when we lost it. The view of the park from the gallery is the best one I've seen.
Seeing this video gives me the desire to see a video on quiet places at Disneyworld and Disneyland (preferably Disney World, since I go to that park more often)
What a great video!!!! Going next week and will tell Red hello for you!!!!!
Great video! My favorite land too! And also digging the old pirate music!
9:45 Him mentioning Creepypasta gained me as a subscriber. Totally a CP fan. Candle Cove is a CP pirate story, so candle snuff does sound familiar.
