    Thank you so much bruce, this video was invaluable for me attempting a loctite repair on my '90 miata. I studied this video and it went very smooth.

    Thank you so much for the video, it's going to save me so much hassle!
    I recently picked up a '90 Miata that's in worn shape. The owner took care of it until the car started losing power and ultimately stopped turning on/running, so he left it sitting for years after giving up. I suspect it's the crankshaft, battery power issue, or something is off with the engine.

    Thank you, really awesome video. I just did this on my 1990 this past week. My crank was in good shape and I didnt need to use the 660, but every other step in this video is a good way to make sure it stays that way.

      Thanks Niamh. I'm usually in too much of a hurry to record any repair videos. I just figured that since there aren't really any good ones on this repair that I'd do one.

    How's she goin'? That Locktite 660 look like great stuff. I have never heard of this type before. Sure does help for a problem like this eh!! Looking like this will be a good repair Bruce and you'll be out tooling around the hood in no time!!! Take care!!

    With these problems after a while with a shortnose crank... is it a better idea to buy one with a longnose? Or is a shortnose better?

    • @BruceLyeg
      @BruceLyeg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It's definitely better to get a long nose if you can. Not all the short nose cranks fail though. It's caused by people not properly torquing the crank bolt after doing the timing belt usually.

    What if the keyway is really worn and wobbled out on the crank, wouldn't JB Weld be better to fill in gaps ? Or should I need a whole engine tear down to replace the crank?

    • @BruceLyeg
      @BruceLyeg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Obviously replacing the crank is the best option, but also the most time consuming and expensive one. JB weld has been tried and found to not be as strong as the Loctite Quick Metal. Another option would be to have the key welded in place and the gap filled with weld.

  • @brianmccolgan4432

    Bruce, can I do this without replacing the timing belt? 1990 with 80k miles

    • @BruceLyeg
      @BruceLyeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      You can reuse the old timing belt if it's not in bad shape but I'd change it anyway. It has to be removed to do this and timing belts aren't too expensive. Even low mileage belts wear out. The rubber gets brittle over time.

  • @xXEvangelXx
    @xXEvangelXx 3 ปีที่แล้ว

    I'm probably going to buy a car that has the short nose crank, obviously I'm going to check if it's wobbling like crazy but beyond that what should I do with it? At 170k I'm assuming the timing belt either has been done or should be done soon, should I take it to a local Miata guy?

    • @BruceLyeg
      @BruceLyeg  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If the timing belt has been changed, ask who did it. Not properly torqueing the crank bolt can cause the wear on the keyway that causes crank wobble. Take a look at the radiator, if it's a brown color, it's going to blow or crack very soon. Look for rust on the lower front fender behind the front wheel and on the lower rear fender in front of the wheel. Take a good look underneath for rust. Good luck!

    how many miles on this Miata? i wonder how many miles till it get worn out.

    • @BruceLyeg
      @BruceLyeg  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      This one was at around 140,000 KMs. They don't always wear out, I have another one that's over 400K and fine. It all depends on if the crank bolt was properly torqued down after doing the timing belt

    As someone who's looking at a 1993 import mx5 in the UK, seeing such a recent video on this issue makes me confident.
    I'm yet to find out from the seller if it is a short nose crank car but I'll keep this video on hand should I need it, thanks a lot man.
    Do you know when they stopped using the short nose cranks?

    • @BruceLyeg
      @BruceLyeg  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      You should be good unless the engine was swapped. Mazda stopped using short nosed cranks midway through the 1991 model year.

  • @AlexSmith72399

    Hey! out of curiosity, how realistic is it to swap a long nose crank in place of a short nose crank? i have a 93 but i just purchased a very clean 90 (with short nose of course) and was considering swapping the long nose from my 93 to my 90 so i can more reliably go towards forced induction

    • @BruceLyeg
      @BruceLyeg  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Swapping the engine or just the crank? The short nose is plenty strong. The only problem with them is when people don't replace the crank bolt and properly torque it when working on the car. My other Miata is also a short nose and it's been turbo'd for about a year now. it's around 225hp and 12lbs of boost without a single problem

      Doing that would have made the video extremely long. There are already numerous videos on how to get the engine to the point where my video starts
