I once made a rug in class from old blankets. I’m also a rug hooker with oodles of noodles (cut strips) on hand. I’m tempted to try them in a warp faced project.
I've begun playing around with tapestry, which is most certainly the most wefty- faced fabric of all! So true about spreading out the warp so that it doesn't even have a chance of peeking through the fabric! Now I want to try the same principles on my floor loom, using some bright mercerized cotton weft bundles. Thanks for the insprirration. Great vid, as usual.
Doing a weft-faced project right now...although I had no idea a weft-faced fabric was even a thing until I watched this. It's just what happened. This is my first-ever "serious" weaving project on a modified children's frame loom, so basically I have no idea what I'm doing, but so far it looks good. It's SUPER slow, though because I am NOT using a large weft at all. I am using 9/2 linen....a lot of 9/2 linen....
Did a weft faced thing once. It was a bit light for a rug and a bit heavy for a throw, so I let the customers decide. It wasn't what I would call blanket sized, but it could cover a person for added warmth. The colors were bright, like you said, alternating with dark and bits of white or yellow. I did it at 6 epi because that's the dent I had, but warped it with standard rug warp. Then used a combination of size 5 bulky and size four Red Heart yarns as weft. (I was stash busting.) I ended up selling it for $60 (was asking $25), when two customers started haggling over it between themselves, each saying they'd be willing to pay $xx fir it. Well, I'll pay more.... 😀 I just stood there. The guy who wanted it for a car robe to put over his legs won. Wyoming winters can be harsh, and it was that year. He really wanted that blanket. The other guy, who had wanted it as a throw in his cabin, walked off, disgusted, but came back later to buy a rug made from blue jeans. Oddly, I've been thinking about repeating that thing, and the jean rug, in the foreseeable future, so you might see it on my loom in a month or so.
I'm currently doing a weft faced weave, place mats. The warp is a no frills 8/2 cotton, and the weft is a beautiful color changing single. The colors blend from one color to another. I purchased the yarn for knitting and discovered that it was awful to knit with because it split at the drop of a hat. However, it looks great as a 2x2 weft faced twill. The yarn does all the work.
I've just been having fun with krokbragd. Only 3 shafts but so easy to design whilst at the loom. I have been using aran knitting cotton for nice crisp geometric patterns. Thanks for the tips as always!
You could use wool roving.... that's unspun wool that is combed into a long roll. If you use a small roving, it can be a placemat or something similar. If the roving is heavier, you can make rugs.
Finally short and to the point weaving instructions with a bit of energy - I'm new to weaving, and I'm loving your videos.
