My mother got sick in 2016 and was in the hospital. She had an aneurysm that we knew was going to take her life. I brought in my iPad and put this song on repeat! I laid it on her pillow and kept it on repeat. After a week she finally succumbed to the thing that would take her home. I believe she was ushered into the Holy of Holies with this song in her heart. Thank you for sharing this song and its history.

Many years ago when l was a newborn Christian we sang this beautiful hymn, and l wrote in my hymn book that l wanted this sung at my funeral. Just this week it was broadcast that Eric Liddell, the Flying Scotsman who won a gold medal in the Paris Olympics of 1924, asked for the camp orchestra to play it outside his window when he was dying in POW camp in China.
In the middle of the night under deep distress, the Lord brought this into my mind. I knew it as a young Christian, now 50 years later, it comes to my memory. Bless the Lord O my soul.
Many years ago, I had been working on memorizing this hymn. Then we got the call that my mother's father was dying; we piled into the car and headed across the state, trying to get there in time to say goodbye. And I was able to sing it for my mother on the trip, which found very comforting and encouraging. Who could have expected that? 🌺🙏🌺
This song has meant so much to me since my father passed away from cancer followed shortly thereafter by my grandma and aunt and uncle within 1 day apart. It has truly spoken to my heart.
Recently, I began listing the "vast cloud of witnesses" from life who have left Earth for the "Great Beyond" and are cheering me on! I look forward to being reunited with each of them as my length of days gets shorter.
Going on 62 years of disabling migraine headaches, CPTSD and many other challenges and I can honestly say that praising God in all things is such a powerful tool. against any enemy lies that try to make us doubt God's love. Thank you for this video. Romans 8:28; 2 Corinthians 10:4-5; Ephesians 5:20. What a blessing it is when you finally have the understanding that God is good all the time, and, all the time, God is good. Believe it and enter into His precious, life-changing rest.
Hello from Nebraska. I love the classical piece Finlandia. I also think the words to their national anthem are very sweet. I believe he wrote this as WWI looked inevitable, to encourage his fellow Finlandiers. I have loved "Be Still My Soul" since I first heard it as a child. The verses describe so well the Father's love for us through the different challenges we face living in this fallen world. I learned to trust the Lord through years of seeking children and finally having our family, and in the loss of a newborn. I saw the face of God smile with love as He comforted us. And now He walks with me as I live with Crohn's disease. I am so grateful that Jesus was willing to die for us, and that He calls us His friends. Thank you for spotlighting this beautiful hymn.
With tears in my eyes I listened to you speak and sing this song. I am 70 years old and have been through a lot of pain and disaappoint in my life. Right now, I don't know if I have enough faith to going on because my body is wearing down and I still my mind is not ready to except it. We just moved to an old house that once had a yard with beautiful flowers but now my lower spine is giving me so much pain. But with this song in my heart maybe I can endure the pain with knowing Jesus does care. Thank you and thank the Lird for leading me to you!❤️❤️❤️🙏🙏🙏
Thank you. 🙏 Most performances leave out both the third and fifth verses. Both of which really ministered to me today, thank you. I’ve had friends depart not from death, but through abandonment after I lost my job three months ago. So, verse three was a blessing. And I will vow to sing the fifth verse in faith! Glad I found your channel. So many wonderful hymns to explore.
This hymn became meaningful to me when I was in doubt concerning my salvation and I thought how wonderful the words of this hymn for those who are His. Now that I have a settled peace that, though I’m not what I should be, by the grace of God, I am what I am and the words of this hymn are also for me.
This song was sung at my mother’s funeral. The words became a true comfort to me. All was darkened in a veil of tears for months, but my Lord was with me. Now it is one of my favorite hymns ❤
When my late husband was ill and suffering with depression, Be Still My Soul brought peace into my heart and I was able to continue supporting him. Bless you Luke 🙏
What an inspirational message, thank you Luke! These words impacted me again: 'Be still, my soul: thy God doth undertake To guide the future, as He has the past. Thy hope, thy confidence let nothing shake; All now mysterious shall be bright at last.' I needed it to today and received the link from a dear Christian friend in the US. God bless you!
I approach the fifth anniversary of my beloved husband's death, and am feeling very low. This morning the Holy Spirit directed my attention to "Be still my soul" on You Tube and ministered His love and tenderness to my soul. Thank you Luke for your sensitivity to His Holy Spirit's guidance and ministry. God bless you. xx
Thanks so much for lovely stories and hyms! I am from South Africa too but I live in the Netherlands now. I will be going back to the mission field soon, to Romania. God bless your lovely ministry.
Be Still my soul: the Lord is on thy side often comes into my mind during the night hours or when things are not going right. I used to know it properly when young but over the past years my memory isn't what it used to be & so only snatches of songs float into my memory via the Holy Spirit. I particularly like the last verse as it is one of hope so it is a pity it isn't sung more often as it is truly a crescendo to the song.
I have leaned on this hymn for His providence and strength. I lost my husband July 1 and my mother-in-law August 1. Grief has been near and raw and though the emotions come in waves, I have to remind myself that His eternal promises are more real and true than what we know to be real. It is hard to describe and being in that dark place I know He is carrying me though the tempest rages. Thank you for singing this as I had not heard all the verses before.
Raw grief is awful and yes it does come in waves, lost a few loved ones myself over the years but God has shown me that we do not grieve as those that have no hope, 1 Thess ch4 v13, we will see them again and our gracious God Himself shall wipe away our tears, Rev ch21 v4.
I am 76 years old and have been singing this song nearly all of those years. I have never heard or known of verse 5! This song is often sung at funerals in the Lutheran church. Thank you for this presentation.

Earlier this week my Mom heard this well known hymn with it's beautiful tune 'Finlandia' on "Songs of Praise" which was held this year in St Giles Cathedral, Edinburgh. They are commemorating the 100th Anniversary since Eric Liddell won the Olympic gold medal in the men's 400m race. He was known as the 'Flying Scotsman' and you will know of him from the movie "Chariots of Fire". He was due to run in the 100m race but because the heats were being run on a Sunday he pulled out of the race. He decided to enter the 400m race as the heats were run on a Friday. He served as a missionary in China for many years. Unfortunately he was taken prisoner in Japan in the Second World War. While there he became very ill. In hospital he asked that the Salvation Army play this hymn for him outside his window which they did. Unfortunately he died there at the early age of 43.
Yes, thanks for sharing! I didn't know this about it being played outside his window while in hospital. I have read in biographies this was his favorite hymn
Thank you for this wonderful reflection on Be Still My Soul, a long time favorite of mine, which became even more special with the death of my wife of 57 years. Verse 3 is especially powerful but is skipped in many recordings; so glad you included it! And a suggestion for the last line of verse 3: change just one word - "He" to " life" - so that last phrase becomes "all life takes away."
Thank you for sharing this! Absolutely beautiful and comforting! My home is just 1,5 miles form the home of Sibelius. My husband I think that this should be the national anthem of Finland. Jesus bless you!
Thankyou blessed and anointed one. My father used to play this one he lived to 93 and although he could still play I used to play hymns for him and renewed my childhood upbringing . Blessed memories ❤
Beautiful and what a message. Thank you. I knew a lot of these songs when I was young and you don’t hear a lot of them anymore. Happy Birthday to Jennifer!!
This is one of our familys favourite hymns .My dear husband had a powerful tenor voice. I can play the keyboard and we sing this hymn together.Whenever we think of its background tears will roll down .Now my great source of comfort is to sing hymns .
One of my favorite hymns. Another hymn to the tune of Finlandia is “We Rest on Thee”, which was sung by Jim Elliot and the other missionaries when they were martyred.
Your podcast, as with a few others Christians ones, is the Word of God sustaining me now through difficult times in my life. Thank you for your Ministry to me as to do many others. God's message brings hope that all will be well and this too shall pass. Thank you for being His voice.

Both this hymn and We rest on Thee our Shield and our Defender are wonderful hymns, both fit with Finlandia beautifully. Didn't often sing them in church, so when singing them from memory I would splice verses from both together as one hymn.
Addition to my message just before:
It reflects perfectly the serieus sentiment of that time, and it is still of nowadays sung
