  • Who else loves the late Edwardian inspired costumes in Titanic?
    In this video I reproduce Rose's swim dress from Titanic using historical methods where I can. Since I have an undying love for the film, I thought it was fitting my first video would be centered around one of the Titanic costumes. I love how, historically, fashion repeats itself as the styles of 1912 are almost exact to styles 100 years earlier in 1812. I've been working on mine and I used a basic regency dress pattern as a base and just adjusted the seamlines and did some finagling with the back closures. The purple outer layer which is like a coat is how I made mine but is attached at one shoulder so I can close the under dress in the back and secure the "coat" layer over like a robe with the sash tying in the back with a bow with long tails.

    I was mesmerized by the dress that Kate Winslet (Rose) wore in the film. I would love to wear such a dress in our time! Can you believe that! Imagine in 2013! It’s so lovely. I love the flow it has and it suited Rose well. She looked gorgeous in it. It’s a style that looks like it could pass as a fashion today. I have noticed that some things from that era haven’t changed much up to our present day.

    🌸🖤🫂✝️ Always felt if Rose was a real person she probably would’ve had a madein of hers hand sew on that passed down lace. I think everyone would’ve been upset but she would’ve loved it clearly! I feel like it’s also how she would’ve learned normal behavior like sewing or something like it. Like house cleaning, I think if the movie want on from that fight with soon to be she probably did more smaller things so she could be teached or learn from sight seeing it done. then doing that away from everyone like cleaning or sewing by hand.

    • @CarolineElizabethMartin
      @CarolineElizabethMartin  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've been researching the various Edwardian (late and early) corset styles. Boning really began to calm down in the mass produced 1910s corsets and like you mention, smoothed the hips and landed at the upper thigh. My November project will be dedicated to recreating the jump dress 😏. There is no doubt Rose would've worn a corset with the jump dress since it was a dinner dress. So I will be constructing her corset and combinations in preparation for the project, excited!

    OMG! That looks absolutely beautiful! I love the swim dress from the film as well, and I got a pattern just for it (Simplicity 8399). Have you tried that pattern? Also I noticed for the original dress, the sash in the back goes up into an inward V shape. Is that a difficult task to complete? I hope to make this dress one day soon! I hope you make more of Rose’s dresses! The Jump Dress is beautiful too!

    • @CarolineElizabethMartin
      @CarolineElizabethMartin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Thank you! I have examined simplicity 8399, it definitely would need some adjustment to get it to be super similar to the original. Actually the back was really hard for me, that’s why I don’t turn around in the video 😅. I ended up doing a standard closure with hooks and eyes. I plan on doing the jump dress next- a lot of beading lol

    • @TheGreekPianist
      @TheGreekPianist 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@CarolineElizabethMartin Oh definitely, from the looks of it on the front cover it totally needs adjustments! Especially the fabric. The problem is I can’t sew without a pattern or print to follow. And I want to make the swim dress as authentic and close to the original as possible, like you did! • @CarolineElizabethMartin
      @CarolineElizabethMartin  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      So this took me about a month to make but I wasn’t working on it seriously. If you work on it 5-8 hours a day you could probably finish it in a week/2weeks. I’m not 100% sure given my skill level is intermediate to advance. Can you read a pattern? There is a titanic pattern by simplicity that you can purchase to make a less accurate swim dress. I think this dress would be great for a beginner because it’s probably the easiest dress from the titanic to make. However there are a lot of little strategic things like the sash, the lace, the beading, the multiple skirts, the sleeves.
