Hi since ppl are confused I'll explain to yall what I think it's about.
The girl (Leqi) and the guy (Ken/Yujian) have been in a long term relationship for some time however the guy moved away to Hokkaido to pursue his dreams of becoming a sushi chef. In the beginning they would communicate through letters and Ken would tell Leqi how beautiful Otaru was and how he wished for her to one day visit him.
But as the relationship went on it didn't work out as they planned bc LDR's are difficult. They probably drifted apart and haven't spoken/sent letters to each other in some time and were in this awkward time where they both didn''t know if they were still together anymore but after Leqi realized she got promoted to a sub-branch of her company in America she wanted to go and see Ken in person to break it off for good and see him for the last time.
When she got to the sushi place he was kind of surprised but he wanted to be professional so he acted like he didn't know her perhaps maybe waiting until he got off work to speak to her properly. But unfortunately she got drunk by the time the shop closed so instead of talking about the important stuff, he kinda teased her. When he said like oh who said such a lame thing to you, maybe he was expecting her to say you did but she said my ex-boyfriend and in that moment he realized that she came here to end things and they just kept up this act of not knowing each other. Also the subs here are a mess so here's a better translation:
Ken: Why did you choose such a time to come to Otaru? (implying weather is bad)
Leqi: Well it's better than being teased everyday for never seeing snow in your life before.
Ken: There are people like that? Who's that lame?
Leqi: My ex.
They probably did this so they didn't have to think too much about their past as a couple or blame each other or whatnot. Like the time on the mountain when he was like oh maybe he should have kept to his promises and she said it doesn't matter now does it? So instead she kinda told him her feelings as if she didn't know him and as if she was just talking to a stranger about her ex without getting too confrontational about it since she wanted their last days to be pleasant. And he wanted to make up for not bringing her to Otaru during the time they were together and tried to fulfill everything on her bucket list. So he took her to places while she read the letters he sent to her in the past about the various places he wanted her to see and they spent time together like he intended to when they were still a couple.
And the inn owner and sushi chef probably knew because Ken told them about it at some point (probably asked for a day off then told the sushi chef and when he was waiting for Leqi at the inn maybe he told the inn owner idk) honestly and since it's a small town the inn owner and sushi chef were probably acquainted already.
In the end the subs are fucked up so it came of as confusing but it was just a joke between the two of them. She said you are my best ex-boyfriend as in you're the best ex-bf I've ever had and he said I'm the only ex-boyfriend you've had kinda in a teasing way. I mean keep in mind they've been in a relationship for 10 years until the broke up just a dayish ago so I'm guessing she's probably never dated anyone before him.
In the end he tried to make sushi for her but could only do the rice since it takes a long time to master sushi making (8 years he says in the short) and imo it symbolizes the fact that he's still not done pursuing his dreams yet. And it also shows that he's sorry he couldn't finish fulfilling all that he promised to do with her and that their relationship couldn't come to completion. And then she pretended to eat the "sushi" and said said it was delicious pretty much implying that she is satisfied with everything he's done for her even if he wasn't able to make her a delicious proper sushi the way he wanted to.
The end.
TBH the subs at some points were really trash and unless you speak mando it can get confusing at points.
PS. Someone can explain the "Love Letter" movie reference scene where she's screaming from the mountain because I've never watched the movie.

Eddie Peng seems like a really nice person. This was a really good role for him! And this is a great role for Zhang Ziyi too. In an interview, she said that she doesn't want to be only known for her action movies. I am sure she was happy to play this character.
Eddie Peng's pained facial expression while holding the letters was on point in this scene, a definite giveaway that he was the Ziyi's ex-boyfriend.

There is some translation provided, but there's so much that's not made clear that it's hard to feel any certainty about what you've seen. Still, there is help in the comments once you've seen it, and I encourage you to see it.This little film tends to wake up the inside and make us wish very much that love could be more simple, and bring with it less pain, or at least came with a fool-proof instruction manual..One of the nice things in 'SLML" is how good the actors all are and the careful deliberateness of the director..Excellent. I also appreciate that the writer seems to leave 'possibilities' before us at the finish of this story...That--I 'really' like..♥
