I like to collect MetaZoo, but you are spot on. Trying to do too much stuff with no direction.
Never had an issue with the darker stuff. Cryptids are mostly dark so it seemed right to be included in the game.
Having that theme of good vs evil play out with cryptids is where I saw the most potential in MZ and could have made a great story.
I don’t understand the switch to hellokitty at all though and largely agree with your other points.
I respect your take as I have observed that others enjoy it as a darker themed game. I think I misread what it was supposed to be back in CN 1st edition as I have not ever been super into cryptids although I thought it was a cool element of the game and I liked other attributes of it.
I feel bad for anyone who got suckered into MetaZoo. The rug pull was boring and slow but it was obvious to anyone who wasn't invested.

Why do you and Amu continue to make videos on Metazoo if it’s dead? Surely a dead game means nobody talks about it. I agree 2023 was a mess of a year but people still continue to actively talk on the discord and on Facebook. I still like buying Metazoo and I guess in relation of the Mike letter. I’ve not bought recent sets or things until things change.
Umu specifically has an unending gripe with metazoo, I don't really understand why people take Umu seriously.

Outside of the concept, art, overall gameplay & the quality of the product (packaging/presentation) - I think every decision Mike made was wrong. This is such a brilliant IP and idea but the owner managed to drive away nearly every supporter and customer while burning nearly all of the bridges to get the product to consumers or build local communities. Mistreatment of LGS', judges, streamers, content creators, community of supporters & fans destroyed MZ. Increasing print runs while decreasing your customer base is probably not a great idea.
I had been very defensive about MZ because it is a great idea. Also, it was forgivable that Mike made mistakes, building a business such as this isn't easy. At this point, however, I think it's a dead duck. Where is MZ getting its revenue? Where has MZ been getting its revenue? They haven't been. With all of the backlash and anger being thrown at MZ, you'd think that it'd be top priority to pay out those competitors who still haven't been paid. Yet, the deadline came and went without payment or even communication to those players. If MZ had the money to pay them, I'm sure they'd have been paid. I think Mike killed it with a never ending series of ill-advised decisions and blunders. Very shortsighted. Totally deluded.
I'm very disappointed in how things turned out. I really like MZ. First thing I've collected since I was a kid. I still want to collect MZ but Mike is still, at this moment, managing to continue pissing off what's remaining of his community. Even Argos made a video the other day calling for a change in management at MZ. Mike ruined this IP. Unfortunately, probably for good. I would be shocked if there was a MZ release this year at all. They have no money nor customers. It's done.

I think the issue of core image is wrong. Lets look at other tcg. Magic is now fortnite, doctor who, warhammer, etc its all over the place now. Yugioh, was supposed to be a kids card game. When it first came out plent of the the very first batch of cards are not kid friendly at all and censored. Now, yugioh has all types of weird stuff in it. The ONLY tcg that stuck with it self is pokemon, but i mean pokemon is the largest IP like ever. Metazoo probably did need to focus but i think image was the least of its issue. I think a much bigger issue is lack of players. It never seemed marketed as a game. All the marketing was about how print runs, how limited things are etc. But with out players these games fail. Cards have value in tcg based on rarity but also playability. But with out players what does metazoo have? They made a tcg that felt more like baseball cards.
Great points. Agree with you completely on Magic. Zoo needs some pokemon-style first battle decks or something to ease new players in.
The game was released at the perfect time. Covid money was everywhere and people had money to burn. Kudos to the owners of Metazoo who timed it perfectly and made lots of money from nerds that wanted to collect cards. Now, with higher interest rates and a new economic environment, it's time for this game to die.

At this point there are too many cards and printings for Metazoo to be able to thrive or be beginner friendly. A lot of people also have fomo so they won't wanna play a tcg that already has all of its products out. Game can't die when it was never alive.
I definitely think they need some super easy newbie decks in Targets and such to ease players in. Pokemon and Lorcana have great starters ready to buy off the shelves and learn, but Zoo hasn’t put any starter products out that I’ve seen. I am not sure the blister packs stocked there really add anything when you can get a 1st edition booster box for cheap.
Those cards will be worth alot because they will never print any more $$$$$

Iv played a lot of TCG games in my past 20 years, in and out of yugioh, I play weiss schwarz, magic right now, and use to play vanguard, pokemon, duel masters and force of will. I can say a few things about the game itself and the vibe I get from it. It seems the people behind the game just honestly wanted to make money off of it. And when Logan Paul was talking about the game im sure they thought "Oh YES!!! Now our game is gonna make so much money" and proceeded to throw all their money at the game while it was overhyped. And it did for a while but I honestly think people just picked it up, collected and sold cards because of the hype, I'm pretty sure that's what mostly happened, no one was playing the game. Now that the hype has died out, the game is meh.Honestly, the game itself is mid at best, but honestly in my opinion on how I feel about the game, it's really nothing special. The art is kinda nice but almost seems made by 5th graders. The engine is typical (tap cards to summon things), nothing special.
I think they really thought the Logan Paul hype train was going to carry the game for a while, but I'm sure people who like me saw after a while, greed and pride only goes so far. And since they seem to not know what their doing, the game is going to dwindle. Im sure they thought if people sold out each set they could just barf out another set and sell it all again and keep going. But now it just seems like a stock market game. Try to collect the coolest cards and keep them until something happens. But I saw this from the beginning, I only saw this game as a cash grab from the start to be honest and that seems all it really was. They threw their money into the game, tried to do to much, couldn't take criticism for things, and now it fell behind considering this game doesn't have a lot backing it up accept pure sales. The only people that made money were resellers and collectors/and card flippers who made bank at the games hype. But the fact a guy talking about a game like this and doing exactly what pretty much everyone else did ( purchased the game to collect it and never play it to make more money ). Of coarse greed will fail a game, greed only takes you so far, and with a seemingly boring and typical card game like this. Ya I saw this from a mile away.
Got in with KS, got out when Rudy pumped it and changed the entire way Mike was running the company. I kept buying non alt boxes after KS delivery for $78 directly from Metazoo and sold them a month later for 3k after the Rudy bump. I'm sure a swing like that was totally healthy :P
I thought I had it good getting a Kickstarter box at 2k and selling it for 5. It was a different game back then and I feel lucky expecting a future bump after Rudy teased it.
I think the dark theme that Metazoo has is good, because no other TCG has this kind of dark theme or auro to it. So that´s unit and good. Metazoo don´t has to be for young children. So I think they should keep this dark theme and this style of art.
But I think Metazoo should have come out with the TV show, a movie and a video game from the very beginning so that people around the world know what Metazoo is and what the story is about. I love Metazoo and I have a lot of cards and I really like the game, but I still do not know what the story is about.

The hello kitty colab was a complete miss, they had a false sense of hope because of the lines at NYCC. I hope the realized the lines were purely resellers and not fans.
Yea, I think those promos were absolutely free tendies.
They did put out a mission statement and I think apology letter. I think they're saying how they were trying to aim to be like pokémon's older brother kind of like Sega and all I couldn't help but think, oh that's a great business model.

Thanks for being honest. I followed this from before 1st ed. They might have had sonething but Mike has proved to be an absolutely clueless moron and the FOMO/Hype really messed up expectations and natural growth.
I was banned from the discord for asking why there were skateboard decks with promos but not how to play info on the website. Two years later and I still can't find in depth play info on the site.
I recently learmed how to play and was considered buying in to play it as the ship sinks but the game play info is so rare I'm going to skip. When all Im seeing is hopium Metazoo to the moon post or people dumping.
I also hated the foil only cards. Do not want to spend 40.00 a card cause it only comes in a super rare foil. Not worth paying that much for a sinking game.
MetaZoo didnt have hope... it had Hype and Fomo. Big difference.
I appreciate your points about the gameplay rules. I think there should be precon decks in Target instead of blisters to help with this. “Get in touch to collaborate” message on website banner and social media bio also a bad look.
@FranklyCollecting , yup a constructed deck would have really helped me in my interest. Instead I'm going to Caster's website and they have meta decks listed but nothing with Kurumi cards. The entire website didn't look like it had been updated in a year so I didn't know if I could trust that these decks were still top tier before I go drop money on them. What was even more discouraging is Zoo has icons to represent things. Those icons changed arts around sets so Id need to carry multiple rule books to have a comprehensive list of icons. The people teaching me how to play couldn't even tell me what one was. Just way to much of a hassle for a dieing game imo
They could really use some mini starter decks like the Pokemon first battle decks to ease newbies in and give an easy introduction, with some super simple fourth wall effects.
@FranklyCollecting , speaking of 4th wall effects I've heard a bunch of then are illegal for tournaments but I couldn't find any info on it.

Youd have clowns wearing 2 hats, a red bowtie and arguing over whether the area there in is "suburban" or when nightime starts. I agree with you, but don’t let go of your collection yet. Hold on to it a little longer. It is possible for things to change for the better. I do think it sucks for the people who got into metazoo early paying full price or above retail for products that crashed really hard. It is very discouraging.
I will probably get rid of some select things when I’m able and hold on to others. We will see in 2024 if there is a hard swing back to roots and folks like it again, but IDK!

I've always been interested in MetaZoo's Topps cards but I can't keep up collecting the regular cards. They are also just too dark for my taste.
I agree with that. Apparently, there is an audience for that style, but I would guess it’s pretty niche compared to something that leans more toward Pokemon.

I agree. I thought those were great sets, even Wilderness and UFO, but the oversupply, drama, and saturation of competing products really brought things down after that.
I know this is off topic but considering pokemon some have just recently dropped videos and a lot of those folks are jealous salty Magic people that realizes their game sucks because they treat them like shit and have an animosity towards Pokemon. cause you made a video about it blowing again and thats what the hobby does. people are quick to be negative.

Sad. It seemed like Metazoo was really popular and next up to join the big 3. But with all the setbacks they caused, they dropped the ball. I feel like metazoo's days are numbered..
I definitely think there was way more potential that started to dwindle from around Wilderness on. It also sounds like it’s hard to get into playing the game at this point in terms of learning the rules, keeping up with meta, and such, as @audrisampson has suggested.
It was never destined to challenge the big three.The art looks like it was drawn by third graders.I don't see anyone raving about the game play mechanics ,either.Most of the people who hyped it from the start were speculators.
I definitely saw it as analogous to competing with pokemon the way fab was running up against mtg, but I think fab has fared better. I wonder if Rudy saw it that way too early on.
First off Umu sniffs dog crap, his opinion is about as valid as expired milk from 1999…Second you should have listened to what Rudy said, he said he wasn’t sure if MetaZoo would be printing his future promos because they haven’t answered his texts. Third and the biggest problem is Andy the MetaZoo president. If he is ever replaced, things can only go up, but for now buy the dip, MetaZoo will never go away but will need a lot of time to rebuild everyone’s trust, things are bad, but time heals all wounds and one day MetaZoo be back on track, it’s going to be a long road but things will be fine eventually.
I went and saw the Zoo segment of Rudy’s video. Not sure what the future holds for Zoo but am not optimistic myself from what I’ve seen, although I wish all well with it. I really like Umu and think he is able to articulate many things just the way they are, although I understand some don’t like the more negative focus. Appreciate your input.

Rudy litteraly admit he don't see how MZ can manage to sell their next products after the absolut disaster that was Hello Kitty (which was supposed to be the "garanteed Hit" and the stop of MZ fall).
What he said was that MetaZoo is done for now, maybe for years, probably for ever.
Most people saw it coming but MetaZoo censorship shielded their toxic community from this truth.

There are plenty of people like me who love MetaZoo but are close to leaving due to all of the dissapointing decissions they have made in 2023. If people weren’t leaving Mike would have never had a reason to release that letter to begin with and they’ve already broken a couple promises on there only 2 weeks later. Some things never change.
Metazoo closely resembles trash at this point.
It’s a lot easier to say you’re going to change or improve this or that than it is to actually take action. It feels good to tell people I’m going to pick up music again, but when it comes time to practice every day … eh …

I'm seeing and hearing people buying all these cheap booster boxes as investments in case Metazoo comes back....but that only worked with Pokemon because it was a worldwide phenomenon....the demand will never be there for Metazoo and the amount of booster boxes leftover proves it....unless a literal miracle happens this game will flatline....but I do think they have 400-500 super die hard fans left that will carry them until the weight of the dead tcg crushes them all 🏋♀👩🦼💀.
I'm glad fans of Hello Kitty can get the product cheap at least, but I agree that there is not anything investable in Zoo and it is quite dangerous to try to invest in Zoo of all TCGs. IMO, that ship has sailed for a while now, and, for me at least, it's no longer even interesting to collect (too dark, identity all over the place, can't fulfill product, company drama, etc.).
