I'm an odd guy. I'm not especially macho. I literally cry at some Sarah McLachlan songs. And yet I pretty much never cry at movies. I just don't seem to suspend disbelief or get invested enough. On some level the characters just stay as characters for me I think.
Which almost made me wonder "Okay what if it were real, would I cry at say a documentary?" And the answer to that is "yes, sometimes." Or at least there was a documentary on the Rwandan genocide that just wrecked me. (Also on very rare occasions I have cried at fiction movies if the movie plays a song that tends to make me cry or if it really intensely evokes an actual trauma in my past.)

I think "romantic dramas" do tend to "code female" a bit. But not sure this one did. A man wrote it, the story is narrated by a man, and the guy gets the girl despite acting a tad mentally unstable IMO in his youth. So I didn't think it necessarily had the "women's picture" reputation.

I'm going a different route and mention James Garner and Gena Rowlands as Noah and Ellie. Two legends of the Golden Age of Hollywood. James with many movies such as "Victor/Victoria"(1982), "Murphy's Romance"(1985) and "The Children's Hour"(1961), Gena with "Tony Rome"(1967) and "Gloria"(1980). I would also like to point out Gena's son, Nick Cassavetes was the Director to this movie "The Notebook" Love this movie, never get tired of it and always makes me cry. Thank u for this reaction. Always look forward to them!

The part where Rachel Mcadams cried was where I cried the most. She cried so convincingly, she's a very great actress. Anyway, I think we focused so much on the ending and how sad it was. But we gotta remember, 50-60 years of happy marriage and being that inseparable even at that age. That's extremely rare in most marriages. Can't ask for more than that right? It's actually a happy ending movie come to think of it.

I knew you would cry; one would have to be without a heart to not be moved to tears by the story of her Alzheimer's and him reading their love story to her to bring her back, however briefly.
As a movie, I think she made the right decision. If this was reality, it would be a "no." A super volatile relationship that even got physically abusive at times is clearly not a stable one. This works as a romance in a film but likely wouldn't have gone the distance in real life. Happily, though, movies let us suspend reality and enjoy some escapism, which this provides, along with a sweet, poignant story of the elderly couple coping with what so many have to as one of the spouses loses their memories and begins to drift away....

I think what's so unique about this movie is that Lon... wasn't a bad guy. He loved Allie, he was patient and understanding and tried to do right by her even after she didn't do the same for him. It would have been easy to make him a villain but instead they made him a good guy... which just made her choice harder. Very effective story-telling.

Money is great, but it's not everything it cannot buy love, but love is forever if you've truly found it and it's not easy to love someone either, sometimes you're going to fight sometimes, but deep down there is still that spark that tells you that this person is your everyday life that you want to wake up beside you, when someone is there for you no matter what, that is worth more than anything else in the world then to have that special person there for you for good. I cried in the ending of it. The dying at the same time.

I fell asleep watching it. But that could be attributed to the fact that I would watch four movies a day back then. I would come home for four days a month and made sure I watched all the movies that were coming out. And back then we had weekly countdowns of the top movies and there were plenty of good ones. So I'd hire those from the Video store, daily four and watch them. So I'd be sleepy too.
This was listed as Nicholas Sparks' great novels and made into a movie. And there was a rain scene with Ryan Gosling and the Mean girl. So it was a must watch. I used to think Sparks was a woman.
