    Wow. I wish I had watched this before I ordered the cords. Great video. My first with you. I brought my 401A at a thrift store. Now I know I can try it with my featherweight cord. Thanks again.

    Hi ANDY! I bought a 301A and used your videos to clean her up like Coco. She’s awesome now.
    Today I found a 401A for $20! So... I’m back to learn how to fix her up like Sweetness.
    Thank you for all you do for us with these awesome old machines. I’m on a Facebook group for 301s and you are mentioned almost daily for helping someone. You have a lot of fans in there. 💜💜💜

      You will enjoy the differences (and challenges) of the 401A vs the 301A. $20, what a price! You saw my "Trouble" 401A Playlist, right? th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLiDl9yFTP6mJgQmz5lj4NO.html Ask a favor? Next time you are visiting your Facebook Group please tell them Andy Tube says "hey, thanks for watching my channel and saving all those 301A beauties". I think they are the ones who helped my viewership increase, which lets me reach more folks and hopefully save more machines. Thanks for the comment, Mary, and good luck with your new machine! ✨

      Andy Tube I sure will Andy. Hey is it possible to get your email address? I want to send you before and after pics of my 301 Libby! I was soooo proud of myself after she was done that I wanted to show her off to you!
      If it wasn’t for you I’d never even tried to fix her. You’re my sewing machine super hero!

    I went over everything again and my wife said to try changing the bobbin. It was a new repro. I put in an old one and it worked. It was the bobbin all along. Thanks for all your tubes. My wife started collecting and you are a wealth of information to get them in shape.

    Thank you so much for your videos. I have my sewing machines running like they were just taken from the assembly line. These old machines are the best in the world. Hum like a kitten. What you do for us is out here is so valuable. I’ve learned so much from your videos. My mom
    Had these machines. I love them!

      Andy Tube I bought the 403a I think 2 weeks ago. Got it running like the day it was made! Today after finding out I’m loosing another friend in ICU, I just hit the buy button ebay. Wrote the person and thanked them for offering the 401a. I said I’m dedicating it to my mom
      And best friend. He wrote back said he’s taking stuff off his auction that will go with this sewing machine I’m buying. And it was his mothers. It’s been in his like 63 years and he’s so very happy it’s going to someone that will love it, appreciate it and enjoy it! I wrote, God bless you and thank you! I will bring it back to life. I see it still sews, a plus, and the exterior looks in wonderful condition. Says foot peddle and plug not very good. Have to jiggle. I have the foot peddle off the 403 so I’ll be able to work on it get things tip top.
      I’ve got a new singer computer , don’t like, nothing is like the older ones. I’d take these over anything any more. Nothing feels or sounds like them. What power. I want to hear the motor and go through the whole thing. Giving me something to look forward too. These babies are staying with me! Thanks Andy.
      Keep these videos coming. We out here can’t get enough of them. Your a fantastic patient teacher!!!

      Andy Tube, yes , Mom has both these and the 500 rocketeer. I think this might be it for now. So I have used all when I was younger. Before I found your videos 10 yrs ago I let the two go to goodwill. I could not get the stitching right. My heart was broken. I thought a newer one would do the trick. Forget that two newer ones later. I said let me go back to what I know and love after I seen your videos. That was a best decision I ever made. I was kicking myself all these yrs for letting those go. To think I could have at least kept all the parts. I learned a valuable lesson. I won’t do that again. Thanks to you, I think we are all
      out here saving the best. The new machines run. But not like these. Like I say like going from a tricycle to a Lamborghini! Don’t want to sew with anything else after you have with these. I’m
      Spoiled now! In a good way lol
      Thx again. Looking forward to more of your vids especially under quarantine. Stay safe you and your loved ones. God bless!

      We just found your videos and have a 401a we found at goodwill. It will wind a bobbin, but when we try to sew, we can't move the main shaft that would let the sewing arm go up n down. All the selections on the cams can be moved easily. Do you have a video on unfreezing the main shaft and what to look for and try? Or any other suggestions we could try. Thank you for giving such a great introduction to this machine. Bona n Gary

      @andytubesewing1953  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Welcome to Andy Tube and congratulations on your 401A. You wound a bobbin, so the motor and handwheel turn. Did you turn the stop motion knob/screw back to the right to engage the main shaft for sewing? The smaller chrome knob on the handwheel?
      Go here and download a free copy of the instruction manual.
      www.singerco.com/uploads/download/0162c86247a7a4b1c36b1585ee7f5f0496cf11fe.pdf
      Put sewing machine oil everywhere it says to put it. Warm those same areas with a hair drier. This will help get things moving, but don't force anything. This will help things loosen and you keep doing it: oil - heat - oil - heat.
      A good cleaning solves many problems. Go here and download the 401 service manual. It has every adjustment instruction for your machine.

    Hey Andy I purchased a 401a from USA I live in Australia when it arrived i booked it for a service to sewing machine mechanic, brought it home cost $120 for service. I felt there just was something wrong watch a tutorial on cleaning and oiling so opened her up and what a mess black grease and fluff from top to bottom. Cleaned her out and oiled her up what a difference. Just one question what sort of grease and oil should you use on her. My god I love this little machine I have 8 other machine from very old to fairly modern but this is my princess and want to the best I can for her. Thank you so much just stumbled across this video and immediately subscribed. Thank you so much Tricia.

    In love with Singer "gear driven" beauties.....I take care of and use...Model 15-91, Model 201-2, 301A and last but not the most dependable...401A....Had a sewist tell me she watched your video's and learned how to adjust the "check spring" on her machine and that cleared up the problems....occasional thread tangles in the bobbin area....which mine also does. I don't think its a timing prob..I may take to hospital (repair shop) eventually ....For me the sound of the machine ..the feeling of it addictive....I can tolerate most noises made by modern sewing machines....I have not had the luxury of the high dollar ones ..but mid price and lower priced machines nowadays..sound awful to me...Older Singers ..smooth and relaxing!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      You certainly have some of the best models Singer made. Sorry to hear about your thread tangles, but it is fairly common. Many times it just comes down to a good cleaning of the hook and bobbin case then the tension unit. There are adjustments that can be checked without changing any settings, Like the stroke & tension of the check spring and the thread gap of the bobbin cushioning spring. Maladjustments of those do cause thread tangles. I have a couple playlists I can refer you to if you'd like to learn more and do some checking. A total of 44 videos for models 403A & 401A which mostly have the same parts systems.
      th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg.html
      th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLiDl9yFTP6mJgQmz5lj4NO.html

      Working on tension: th-cam.com/video/eVLiED-FCA8/w-d-xo.html
      and many other parts of the machine. If you have a trusted repair shop that is capable of working on a vintage Singer model then that is fortunate. Many places do not have the experience, or desire, to repair. IMO, the nice thing about the vintage machines is they are hard to hurt and are very adjustable and repairable. A reflection on the engineering and manufacturing of the '40s thru '60s I think.
      Happy sewing, and thanks for watching my channel.

      @@andytubesewing1953 Thanks....I did watch the video in which you checked thread gap. A person I spoke with in the FB Group for 401A's has used one for 54 years and gave me some tips...one of which was using a vintage bobbin ..I found one that I tried and low and behold it seemed to help a LOT. I plan to watch your vid on check spring adjustment ...everything else ..including "timing" seems ok following your instructions for checking that issue. Oh I named this machine Ida Singer :). @@stephenvinson6474 Happy to hear about the bobbin tip! There are a number of things to cause tangles for sure. I've found two different heights of class 66 bobbins and the slightly taller one does snag thread at times. Many of the new metal class 66 bobbins have a rolled "edge" on the "barrel" that will snag also. I'm told there a many helping people on the FB groups so you went to the right place I think. It may interest you to know that the 401A was shipped from the factory with 4 Plastic Bobbins, and plastic bobbins are what they recommended for the 401A Class machines (401A, 403A, 404) Ida Singer, a nice unique name.

      The part number for the disc on model 401A is 172226. That part number is also used on the 403A, 404, 500A, 503A, and 328K that I know of. The tension units on models 401A, 043A & 404 are the same. There is an after-market "UNIVERSAL" tension unit sold online that says it works on dozens of models, including the 401A, and it sells for less than $20. I have no idea if it works or not th-cam.com/channels/USPDsHaFtRoz1VA2U1xJ4w.htmlplaylists there are many other sellers of that, too.

    Andy, first of all I want to pay my respects to one of the true remaining Craftsmen on the Planet that have the ability to do this.
    I'm afraid when you go, along with you this part of Historical Museum Quality Rebuild will go with you.
    I recently picked up a Rocketeer 500a for my daughter and (more often than not) the motor will simply "Buzz" and need to be hand started.
    I have sent her this video where you touch on this issue and placement of the thread take-up lever or to bury the needle but my guess is that the issue will remain.
    Could this be that simply replacing the "Brushes" and cleaning up the Armature gaps will resolve this problem?
    Have you done a video on this particular issue or can you point me to one that will help?
    OR: is there a rebuild service that can supply a rebuilt one? I am hesitant to buy a "Used" one for fear that the same problem will exist.

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Joe. I can't reply right now b/c my head is swollen, LOL. If the mechanical parts move freely and smoothly when you turn the handwheel then that eliminates binding, dirty or lack of oil/grease. That leaves the motor and the foot controller. I loosen the stop motion knob, like when you wind a bobbin, and try to run just the motor. If it spins the handwheel I just rest my palm on the wheel to see how much pressure it takes to stop it. I will say more often it is the foot controller causing the problem. If the contacts are dirty, out of adjustment or the resistance carbons a blackened and turning to powder, then when you push on the pedal the electricity must build up or "jump the gap" of a bad adjustment. I have videos of repairing both types of controllers, the button type, and clamshell type. They are step-by-step. I also have videos of rehabbing the motor step-by-step. A used motor is a risk as you say, it might not be much better. You can buy an electronic foot pedal for < $30 and move the cord to it.

      Hey Andy, thanks for the lightening quick reply but in all honesty I expected this judging how well you do everything else....Ok, I'll try to stop 'gushing' over you Pal but don't fault me if I can't.
      I had considered the "Controller" may be the culprit because she performs so well when the clutch is dis-engaged and there is no resistance when turning the handwheel when sewing.
      My daughter really likes the knee controller. I guess if we go the the new foot controller we will lose that function but will watch your video on the "Button foot style" first.
      Best case scenario would be I get a new button style controller and have
      my daughter (or her boyfriend) change the whole thing out because I live a 6 hour round trip drive away.
      Thanks again Andy and will keep you posted.

See the clamshell playlist for where I found the one place to buy carbons. About $16. The "tube" is made to fit the clamshell but is easily opened up to take out the discs and transfer evenly into the 2 tubes of the button style. My wife will only use the knee control too, so I have rebuilt many of them. A nice project for them to do together and tell the kids about someday.

      I just spent 3 days visiting my daughter (Shannon and her 'betrothed' Jesse) for the specific reason to deliver this "Rocketeer". Shannon has the 237 Fashion Mate and was ready to go the the next level so she now has a 237 backup machine and with 2 fold out style tables, she is enjoying the extra table-top space. I made her a 'filler' to fill the hole when the machine head is folded down on the 237.
      And yes, I taught her how to sew and started her out on the 237.
      Jesse is an electronic 'prodigy' and can handle the rebuilding task better than I can no doubt.
      I was watching your video on rebuilding the button style foot controller and think I will order the 'Carbons' before I have Jesse start his magic.
      Thanks Andy!
      PS> I did pretty good but my final statement is to encourage you to keep making these wonderful videos. I have been watching the evolution of how your views are growing and hope you are making $$$$ on them by selling advertising.
      Later Pal.

      You are a good parent. Jesse will have fun then, no problem. You mention the motor brushes. I seldom need to replace them although they, and the commutator, can get dirty. If you saw my last upload you see what lack of maintenance can do. >> th-cam.com/video/WCd0Pf0Gvb8/w-d-xo.html
      I thought about monetizing my channel with ads, but I don't think it pays that much until you get into the huge numbers of views, not a piddling 260K. It's been a couple of years since I checked though.
      I'll get my reward in heaven I guess, like mom used to say. It's been a pleasure sir, take care.

    Andy, thank you so much for your videos. You are a wonderful instructor! I successfully completed my 404 restoration and decided to try my hand at a 401a. I’ve run into a problem. I have what looks like possibly a spring that is broke in half (straight black piece with curved up tips) and I have no idea where it came from. I’m guessing that it flew out from the top when I tipped it over at some point but that’s just a guess. I would like to send you a picture so you can tell me what it is so I can purchase an unbroken one but I can’t figure out how to attach a picture. Do you have an email address I can use by any chance? Thanks!

    Thank you, as always Andy! I have a 401A that was in horrible condition. She is up and running again, however I need to go a bit deeper on cleaning and inspection.. I'm unable to get the bobbin to wind - and I did replace the rubber tire. It seems like the tire doesn't sit snug enough against the wheel to turn it. Any suggestions on where to look? Where to tighten? You mention a couple things regarding the bobbin winder in your initial inspection, and it seems to be my problem too! Any links...suggestions, etc. would be appreciated!

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      A couple of things can cause this. If there is oil/was on the back of the handwheel where the tire touches it will not get a good grip and won't wind. Another is if the bobbin winder spindle is dry and needs oil. You can drop some alcohol in the hole and spin the tire then drop oil in the hole. Finally, there is a tension spring behind the mounting screw that holds the bobbin winder frame to the machine. If it is loose or dirty back there you might not get enough pressure on the tire to wind the bobbin. Here a couple of videos showing how to remove and install that whole system >> REMOVE: th-cam.com/video/H_1nwm5MryY/w-d-xo.html INSTALL: th-cam.com/video/UGZyNRgOLcA/w-d-xo.html
      One last thought; if the tire is too big that prevents the tension screw from applying the full force on the tire to handwheel. Rare, but I have seen that. Good Luck, and thanks for asking.

      @@andytubesewing1953 - I did all three things you mentioned - cleaned/oiled the spindle, cleaned the handwheel / tire with a bit of alcohol, and then tightened the mounting screw. Magical! I have a wound bobbin! Thank you, thank you, thank you! I am really learning so much from your videos. Almost ready to move on to the 99K. :-) I realize that by doing multiple things I really don't know WHAT the actual problem was, but at the point, I'm just glad to be winding bobbins. If it happens again, I will do a bit more "separate" troubleshooting. Thanks, Andy. Your expertise is invaluable to the Vintage-Loving-Machine-Rescuing Tribe!

      A happy ending is always the best! I'm glad it worked out. The 50+ playlist I did for Model 404 has been used by many 401A/403A owners to work on their machines b/c all the parts are the same. The 404 has no ZZ stitching or cam stack, but everything else on the 401A is on the 404.
      th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKIB4kvIHCfHYuyLMUp5A4UI.html
      About the separate troubleshooting. When I first started working on machines I would test it and then troubleshoot each little problem. It took soooo long. I now just remove some of the parts to facilitate cleaning the machine, clean & degrease it, reassemble and oil according to the manual. Funny thing is most of those little problems have disappeared. I've been expressing to people before they try to "Fix" or "adjust" anything, do your best to clean the parts and add a little fresh oil. Thanks for saving that Slant-O-Matic, and best of luck with your 99K. It is a fun machine to work on.

    I purchased a 401a from the daughter of the original owner for only $10. She was honest about the spots in the finish but didn’t matter to me and still doesn’t. I have found that nothing in my arsenal is getting them out including polishing compound. Hmm🤔. Any suggestions? I bough it to give to my daughter. Not to resale but still want it to look nice. Have you ever repainted?

      Years ago I had a T & S 628 that had weird spots and I thought I'd just use a rubbing compound to remove them but the discoloration was imbeded into the paint, not just on the surface. I never got them out. I have never done any kind of painting on a sewing machine, sorry.

    Just bought a Singer 401a, when I turn it over feels like it's been in a sand storm, real gritty. Where do I start?

    • @andytubesewing1953
      @andytubesewing1953  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      See any rust? It may have been flooded. The problem with gritty dirt is getting it all out. I wash and dry a machine like that in the shower. (No kidding) I usually dismantle most of the removable parts first, but you do not have to do that if you don't care to. Using a cleaner/degreaser I pretreat it on a workbench, then a spray & wash in the shower, followed by a very complete drying. If it is as bad as you describe I do it outdoors and use a garden hose & nozzle for stronger rinsing power. This process will get everything out of the machine, bearings, and hinge studs/screws. I'll list some videos here about all that. You can skim through them and see what I'm talking about. You can easily watch them at 1.5 or even 2x speed. First, here is a wash & dry video: th-cam.com/video/N3oYsTBJrFI/w-d-xo.html Feel free to skip to the good parts, haha. Here are the recommended playlists for the restoration of the machine:
      16 videos for model 401A: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKLiDl9yFTP6mJgQmz5lj4NO.html
      26 videos for model 403A: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKKyqvdDRwS-9MfLuwSNJTcg.html
      8 videos for the foot pedal: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKL6ePPxLpmnWSzTyxPKTb71.html
      7 videos for the motor: th-cam.com/play/PLsCOZgzzaiKL6ePPxLpmnWSzTyxPKTb71.html
      You'll be able to skip a number of them as they may cover the same thing, like removing the needle bar, but between all of the playlist you can remove as many parts as you decide to, or as few as you want. I have about 75 more videos, but these I listed will cover almost everything. I hope you can rescue the machine. The 401A Slant-O-Matic has been called the "Cadillac" of Singer sewing machine, and when new cost about $2300 in today's dollars.
      oh, a couple more things since I've already overwhelmed you, Free instruction manual here:

      I'm wondering what is happening to the thread? Does it just stay on the hook and go round & round untill you have a big nest of thread? Anyway, if you want to email my channel at andytube53@gmail.comwith more info then maybe we can work to find a solution.

    Hi Andy, does any of your videos show how to remove and clean the stitch selector knobs on a 401 a or something similar? Or do you recommend that we don’t mess with them. Also does one of your videos show how to make the different stitches? I’m having trouble making that happen. Thanks, Marci V.
