Is technology really ruining your life? | David Ellis | TEDxLancasterU

  • It is almost impossible to avoid laptops, social media, emails, and smartphones. Many of these technologies were developed to help organise our lives, while others promise to keep us fitter and happier for longer. But does all this technology have unintended consequences? David Ellis holds a 50th Anniversary Lectureship in Psychology at Lancaster University and an Honorary Research Fellowship at The University of Lincoln. Much of his work considers how recent methodological developments in technology and data collection (often referred to as digital traces) can reveal information about individuals and their behaviour. He has published on these topics in The Lancet Public Health, the International Journal of Neural Systems, Computers in Human Behavior, Cyberpsychology, Behavior and Social Networking and other journals. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

Im a pretty young kid. I used to be an addict to computers. 14 Hours a day, 7 days a week. I was pretty much setting my life up to go no where. I realized that I was not spending my time figuring out my life. I took family for granted. I put blue light over my mom, and family. I was up to no good. Then, luckily I saw what happened when you did that. At the time I dreamed of basketball. Becoming a NBA superstar. I decided to look up the odds of a kid becoming what they dream of. 96% don't. That's when I promised myself I would be that 4%. And now I've been pursuing my dream. Even though it hasn't been long since I've changed, looking back, I realize how lucky I was to notice this. So to anyone reading this, look around. Look at older people. Look at other people. Most of them grow up, not even knowing what they want to do with their life. All because of computer. We live, then die. You were born to make a difference, so what are you waiting for? Be smart. And don't screw your life up before its too late. Hopefully this taught you something.

I have a love/hate relationship with technology, being an online video guitar teacher on TH-cam. I have managed to reach millions of guitarists through technology ( TH-cam an the internet ) for which I am very grateful for. On the other hand, I find that technology is advancing and changing way too fast, so what you learn about gadgets and software today may become obsolete a few short years from now. And the older you get, the more obsolete you feel. Unlike our early ancestors, whom the elders were respected and valued for their knowledge and wisdom. I wish technology would stop advancing and changing so that we could actually learn and master our gadgets that make our lives easier and more fun, but I don't see that ever happening.

Technology makes our life easier, but not neccessarily happier. It can disconnect us from our immediate reality quite a lot. Our neighborhood, our friends daily life, the natural world with all its fresh air an sunshine etc. That can be pretty sad.

You are right in a way that technology is overtaking our lives. But at the same time it has brought revolutionary changes to our lives. We save time as we do not have to manually wash our clothes, or carry a phonebook around . We can also get information readily . However, there is also an increase in the usage of these technologies for trivial things. If we use them correctly, we would benefit vastly

I agree with you. So many people are clearly addicted to their phones. Checking your phone 40 times in one day is definitely an unhealthy addiction. Everywhere you go, people literally can't put their phone down for longer than 5 minutes. People can't go to an event or on holiday without posting pics of it on instagram or twitter. Although maybe it's not smartphones so much that are the addiction but social media.

Technology is just a means to an end, not the end itself. The end is to live according to the laws of nature, respecting it and not abusing it the way we do. Corporations made us believe we have to use technology to be cool and smart, but actually it's to distract us from our shameful actions, that make 'em becoming richer and richer. And we are all complicit in this, because we have shut our brain down. Technology is not a bad thing per se, but we have to figure out that the soon we stop being fuckin compulsive zombie consumers the better for everyone. But zero hope we get it in time.

I think we all can say we are somehow addicted to Technology. It separates us from reality. But it makes life simpler you can just never get away from your screen. And big industries use Technology to profit from their company which they use to promote their products (Tech Companies). Technology isn't a big necessity in life but it can come in handy, therefore I think technology doesn't bring a negative impact on the world it's just how people are using it (And I am aware this isn't a part of the topic of the discussion I just wanted to add my viewpoint ) Have a great day!

Technology has it's good and bad benefits. But more overall, it's starting to do more bad than good. We as a people, as well as our future generations, are losing touch with their inner selves. The more they constantly distract themselves from the real world. But they don't, and won't know that their losing themselves. If they never even got the chance to get to know themselves, to begin with. So now the question is" what kind of monsters are being created? Because they have no souls, they're like one of the walking dead. If you ask them a question about their self, they wouldn't know how to answer, because they don't know anything about who they really are. Because they've been took the time to get to know their self. 💔🤪😵🤢🤮

    • @kumarakshaya2167
      @kumarakshaya2167 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

About he monster part , it really depends on the way we use technology. It's best to avoid violent games , or any harmful material on the internet that could affect one mentally. They are significant regulations done by some government's to avoid it's citizens from getting ahold of dangerous materials. There are also parenting controls to monitor children's activity so that they are not exposed to something that is traumatic or that might affect their mental health.
People might have forgotten to express themselves in real life but some people are feeling more comfortable in their social media lives. We can get every detail of a person whom we may or may not know from their social media. In reality, if a stranger asks us personal details we would freak out but in social media we want to portray ourselves as open book and we are giving away unnecessary information

As much as technology improves living it also is hindering real human growth. It stunts our growth as humans by making things too easy. The easement makes us lazy, less reliant on our own intelligence, and brings out the worst in some people. So yes as much as tech is good it needs to be put in check as well as those in charge of it. Big tech sensors or stifles what it doesn’t like while tracking and invading our privacy. If only there was a way to adjust to this new way of life without the control big tech levees against those that utilize the tech they provide. In the end we are all now slaves to our phones and technology. Humans were designed to be free and not meant to adapt to this level of technology.

If something makes you feel good, gives you release, I believe that those things may make you dependent, althought the intent may not be that. Perhaps 🤔🤔
Is it human biology?? Some people crack their knuckles because although it hurts now, it feels better after the pain, feeling of release. No pleasure receptors in the body, but there are pain receptors. So if no pain, you create pain to feel the pleasure. Well this may be human nature. We can utilize it for our advantage too, with sports, exercise, meditation.
However if we are happy as is, not try to create pain to feel pleasure, like intentionally putting on tight shoes so that you can feel the release later on, and actually feel pain on some things like exercise, that may lead to better quality of life, ehh. I believe that for now. Perhaps it could be wrong. Maybe this body was developed to handle so much pain and finally win, that nowadays because of so much comfort it doesn't know what to do and finally seeks release through other things, like craving more dopamine through video games, and getting upset over small losses?? Perhaps. I believe meditation can make us realize our true potential, and maybe using our minds too much could be problematic we should let it rest too using meditation and mindfulness and be more involved with the body, in my opinion.

In general, technology is ruining our life. But not for the reasons mentioned in this video. For example, in 1987, I walked into a bank and opened up an RRSP account. It took 12 minutes. Twelve days ago I contacted (a bank) to open up another RRSP account and it took 12 days for the process to be completed. So it's a myth that technology is making things faster, better, easier, etc.

Free energy for Tyler, need diesel lers burn plastics under pressure and distill the liquid, corporations have dumped millions of tons of plastics every year , so I should have no problem finding diesel with how littered the workd is from corporate plastics. It's fine, I told everyone I would have alternative to anything, you're welcome tyrannical tech, I just wanted to make a different life, you wouldn't let me do that, so now I just tell people alternatives to become self reliant off grid

Technology made life easier for whom? Before cell phones and computers we didn't have to lug anything all the time. If you weren't home or at work no one can get hold of you. And the cost of it all is ridiculous. TV used to be free. Phone bill was 25 bucks. Never needed to plug anything in. Cars were much easier to work on before computer chips. Technology is changing the way humans exist. People have two personas the one in real life staring at their cell phone and the other photoshopped with a pretend life on social media. And nobody ever mentions the amount of electricity to keep all of these electronical gadgets working.

The problem is that we don't use enough futureproof technology like a good bicycle, a cold chisel or a hi-ten hacksaw and that's what we need.
We need technology that gets better with age and yet we want fancy phones or the latest game consoles that get obsolete in a matter of years.
