What makes rally even better... You can watch it live for free. You can follow the cars to each stage. You can stand in the garage (usually just a tent) at the end of each stage and watch the mechanics at work. In the smaller local ones the driver is often helping them.
Where I am in Ireland they used to have one in my local park! Like a play park, for kids, with swings and stuff lol

The backfire and loud popping is caused by the anti-lag system where fuel is squirted directly into the exhaust manifold before the turbo with the intention of keeping the turbo spinning when up shifting or down shifting at high speed so there isn't any turbo lag.

Skoda, part of the VW group, makes great cars . The factories in Czechia make the smaller cars including SUVs which are branded Audi, VW, SEAT and Skoda. They share engines and gearboxes. Skoda itself started making cars well over 100 years ago.

Here in Finland the Octavia has been among the best selling cars most years since the early 2000s. Cupra will sell the more exclusive cars of theirs, both when it comes to performance and design..... To separate out Cupra is simply business strategy. I have a RHD (UK) Skoda Superb Estate / Wagon which is the bigger brother of the Octavia. The Octavia is a very spacious car with a big boot / trunk but the Superb is a little bit bigger with a huge boot / trunk & limo like space & legroom in the back. My Superb is a petrol & I had the stock 280bhp engine uprated to 360bhp with a simple & affordable ECU re-map (same engine as in the VW Golf R). It has a 6 speed DSG (auto) gearbox & a Haldex 4 x 4 all wheel drive system (standard on this model). 0-60 is around 5 secs & it is the ultimate Q car because it looks just like any other diesel Superb Estate. Skoda's are well built & very underrated cars.

that awesome sound mostly comes from the "Anti-Lag System". It's a form of air bypass method to keep the turbo running on high rpm when you lift your food from the pedal. The excess air which normaly would be just blow outside (by the blow off etc.) is now getting right before the turbo turbine. And that whole thing leads to the nice misfires :) Lancer Evo and Imprezas (rally versions) mostly use the same anti-lag. It's best live at the rally. When those cars are on their first lap and still not hot, they bang so loud when shifting, its like a slap in the face ;)

As someone who used to shred fields as a youth in the old Skodas during the 80's and early 90's, it's truly remarkable how Skoda have ascended to world class.
The old Skodas were affectionately called buckets and/or skips on wheels. They were dreadful machines. Now though, very sought after, reliable and revered road cars, then a highly favourable tuning machine for high octane motorsport like rallying and touring cars. One of the greatest transformations of a car brand in the past 30 years.

The YT channel Donut has "imported" a couple cars they featured in their site. IIRC, just the transport and fees were almost 10K $, and about half of that was for the vehicle to be released from customs (or whatever) once they had already been landed (from boat) in the US!
On the latest video they've done importing a car, I can't remember what car it was, they did do a pretty good exposure of the different contractors and organizations you need to deal with to get it done.
For Lancia Stratos, I think they're above 400K €, when you get to see one for sale (only about 400 ever built IIRC). As for the sound, it comes from a Ferrari V6, the same one as in the Ferrari Dino, and getting a donor Dino, to take the engine out of, would apparently be even harder than getting a Stratos.
I'm talking avout the getting that Ferrari V6 because there are at least two companies who build "kit cars" that are Stratos replicas. There is a YT called TINK, where they have lots of videos of a Lister Bell STR (one such replica) being assembled and worked on by them.
The engine used by TINK is an Alfa Rome Busso (which many say is the best sounding V6 ever; though there are several different models, with different displacements, number of valves per cylinder, turbocharged or not; they all sound great).
Check it out, iTINK is a pretty good channel, and severely underrated.

2:22 "No car pops more" ...... 😁...... Try a group B Mazda RX7 (80's, early 90's) (th-cam.com/video/laqW96hgydo/w-d-xo.html)... when those cars popped and banged in your presence, you really felt it in your guts.
Or a Ford Escort Cosworth (also 90's) with an ALS (Anti Lag System) on it (th-cam.com/video/u4p3Zem6i4c/w-d-xo.html).
I think regulations nowadays make the present cars 'whisper' compared to back in those days. 🤣

I love the Castrol sponsored one with the matching green feathery arrow Skoda logo on the door.
I'll never get used to this being called "rally". To me it's always been known as "rallying". Standing in the damp Forest of Dean watching mk2 Escorts, Chevette HSRs, Mantas and Lotus Sunbeams.
It would be great if Ian looked at some older Skodas. I remember my mum walking to meet me from primary school, when I was about 5 or 6 in about 1991/92 and someone who lived nearby gave us a lift home in his rear engined 1980s Skoda Rapide. He was a chemistry teacher from Northern Ireland who used to show his pupils how to make bombs lol. I remember him saying "do you know what kind of car this is?" I knew what it was, but he jumped in and said "It's a Skoda. Horrible car! Don't buy a Skoda, never buy a Skoda ... I've had three of them. Horrible car." He since bought at least two more Skodas!! Quite an eccentric. I think that most owners of Eastern Bloc cars back then over here were quite alternative, shall we say.
My best mate currently drives a gold Skoda Octavia saloon about 15 years old, with a little rust. But we have big respect for it. I have more love for my old Vauxhall Vectra though, being a GM fan.

Look wise they kinds look like the mid 90's evo(5 or 6) maybe thats why people like them.Sound wise its hard to say what sounds better, for me its the mk3 Clio since i was lucky & got a ride in one & boy it was something special for me(bias here) but those things pop & bang like theres no tomorow, from the outside even mk1 Clio are fun buggers.
The kodiak i thinks is based on the vw Tiguan (same platform as the Gold & Octavia funny enough).

The VAG cars only share floorpan and running gear. The body’s are all unique to each manufacturer. For a truly glorious rally car sound search Andy Burton Peugeot 306 Cosworth. Unfortunately he regularly beat cars worth loads more and the car was outlawed.

Ian it is very easy to explain every Škoda is almost 100% last generation of VW from that class just like every new VW is almost the same car as the previous Audi, interconnected brands under one big VW Porsche Group, with the " individuall " design features and that is why VW is The Leader in the world, enjoy....!!!!
