Phil is so open and honest, seems like such a decent guy. He had a great look going on in the early days, the hair, make-up, clothes- great style.

the last bit, like last few mins when Phil talks about why he doesnt live in London....i loved how humble, honest, vulnerable of an answer he gave. I've heard his other interviews and he is so human (no pun) and its so nice to hear people be so genuine.

I saw The Human League about 15 years ago. Phil Oakey was in his 50s and smoking hot. It was a smallish festival in Scotland. We stayed all day just to hear them play in the evening and they were fabulous

Dare was pretty much perfect, that was always going to be extremely difficult to top. Would be for any band. But boy am I glad they made it, that album, especially for a synth over, is so enjoyable to listen to. They knocked it out of the park w/that album.

Funny how The Human League and Def Leppard have kinda followed a similar tracjectory for part of their careers. They both come from Sheffield, formed in 77, shared some glam influences(Bowie etc),were part of important 80's movements (new romantics, new wave,2nd British invasion),both kickstarted the 2 definitive dominant 80's music forms(synth-pop,hair metal),both had albums called hysteria(tho one was more successful than the other! Not need to guess lol),both are fans of each other too as well as being friends. Phil Oakey said that DL are the HL with loud guitars and more hair, and Joe Elliot said that when DL were making pyromania it was influenced by dare.

I realise we all have the ‘ music was better in my day ‘ syndrome but there’s no disputing the diversity and creativity of the various movements between 62 and 90 - only 28 years when compared to the same timespan since 1990. I was born in 64 and I think for pop etc music lovers there’s been no era to touch it. A guy on here once stated how there was only 15 years between The Beatles and The Human Leagues’ first albums...unbelievable but true 🏴😇❤️from the Wilverley Enclosure Witches

So, Ian and Martin decide "we're out of here" and leave Phillip and Adrien to shoulder the burden of a tour? (along with possibly being sued £250,00 for not going through with the tour) I don't know if I could be in the same room with those guys, ever. I'm really glad that Phillip pulled it off and the group became so successful.

    • @eldiablo8580

Martyn was actually kicked out of the group that he had started. Their manager colluded with the record company to pull the band apart. This video doesn't tell the whole story. Watch the video called Synth Britannia and you'll see that Martyn Ware was made the scapegoat for the group's lack of success. The record company actually pulled a shrewd move and split the Human League up and got 2 groups for the price of one. Martyn Ware came up with the name The Human League, it was his band, and then he came up with the name Heaven 17

I've just been re-listening to the Human League's albums and can't believe I've never seen this documentary before - especially since it's from 1999 (22 years ago!) and must have been repeated loads. It was interesting, and I really like how they've stayed down to earth, but it would be nice to see a longer, more in-depth look at the band. I know these kinds of documentaries are meant more as summaries/intros, but it felt like there was so much more to talk about, especially after 'Dare.'

I was a Human League follower since Travellogue. Full into the Martin Rushent era. Then saw them live in I think 2010 in Vienna at an electronic art event. They started after midnight (!) and they were amazing! Unlike the Pet Shop Boys, for example, they managed the art to mainstream perfectly, stayed true to their early followers while also performing "Together In Electric Dreams" ... Great respect to Philip Oakey and the girls!!!

I then saw the new line up at the Gaumont in Southampton in '81 and although Dare is truly a classic album, they were crap live.

That was Let me go, and peaked at 77 in the US charts. I remember them because of that song and the.station I listened to at the time WHTT used to play the song. @Daniel Large It's persoanal taste really. I too love the edgy sound of Reproduction ('Blind Youth' etc), but also get a lot of fun out of their later stuff.

Actually jagguy1225, it was Phil who told Martyn that he was going to throw him out of his own group that he founded! Ian to his credit did not stay and went with Martyn to form Heaven 17 (though it later transpired the split was engineered by their manager Bob Last). In the end both sides had success and Ian and Martyn were clever to agree 1% royalties from the next Human League album in return for letting Phil use the name!

Wow watching the videos from this band when I was a kid gave me the impression that this band was made up of wealthy jet set patricians from the world of Roxy Music's Avalon. To find that they are all from a steel town and that the women were never debutantes is far out!

There were some gorgeous men in these 80's bands. Good time to be a groupie! I was a groupie in the 70's though, and we had some choice meat back then, also! lol

Does anyone know the real story on the split. Martin said he walked into the studio and the girls were there like it was preplanned to go in another direction. It was management and Philip who knew and Martin and Ian were surprised. I don’t think Philip tells the same story.

Basically the management decided that the split was going to happen anyway and conspired with Phil and Adrian to throw out Martyn, then immediately give him another project. As Martyn mentioned in his book, they got two bands for the price of one. Ian knew about the plot but was on the fence until the last moment, so they didn't expect him to follow and it ruined their plans.
Martyn tells it as if it was completely out of nowhere, but Phil often recalls Martyn missing rehearsals and meetings prior to that, so there might be more to the story.

let me just say that the human league is perhaps the finest band in the history of pop music and when you stop and think about how awesome that is it almost makes you want to pass out from the magnitude of all of the various pop bands throughout history . I would have to say that the human league is really important in terms of musicianship and just all around stage antics and equally impressive is the massive catalogues of musical numbers and video ensembles . In fact many people surmise that human league is better described as super human league . Just wow , guys .... and of course gals as well . And so two thumbs up and five gold stars , Massive big ups to this group . Ok then , sums it up for me .
