- In the mid-1980s, a few residents of a West Allis neighborhood decided to decorate their houses for Christmas. Their decorations were elaborate enough to draw attention, as were the neighbors dressed as Santa and elves as they handed out candy canes to passersby.
The residents didn't know it at the time, but they had started one of the most well-known holiday traditions in southeast Wisconsin: Candy Cane Lane.
By 1986, visitors to Candy Cane Lane started to give back to the neighbors, donating money to express their gratefulness for the festive atmosphere (and candy). That year the neighbors collected $1,500 and donated it to the MACC Fund - Midwest Athletes Against Childhood Cancer, a nonprofit that funds research into childhood cancer and blood disorders. The residents' commitment to the MACC Fund was cemented the following year when a neighborhood child was diagnosed with a brain tumor.
