  • Today Bree is trying on her first halter and having her first training session!! But first, we are haying with horses on a beautiful day! We also have a special visitor at the farm, all the way from Germany!!
    Watch our videos to learn about draft horses- horse logging, horse farming, and horse training! Jim uses Belgian, Percheron, and Suffolk horses to do work on the farm and in the woods. He teaches about harnesses, horse-drawn logging and farming equipment, horse feeding and maintenance, and voice commands for horses. New videos uploaded every week. Keep watching to see how Jim trains his new Suffolk Punch colts as he has trained his full-grown teams!

    What a pretty little filly, gosh does this bring back memories of all my precious young'ns! I was gifted with some very very beautiful horses in my lifetime there's nothing better about life than to be sharing it with horses. Have a great hot day up there, I sure do find it strange it's not so hot yet here in East Texas! It was down right cool last evening and this morning is too!

    The way I was taught to teach a foal to lead was to put a halter and lead rope on and then walk beside the foal wherever the foal wanted to go. Within a few days, I could start leading the foal around because the foal was so used to me walking beside it

    • @LadySagitar
      @LadySagitar ปีที่แล้ว

      It works best if you put the mare and foal in a separate small paddock and then place small piles of hay around the paddock. That way the mare will move from pile to pile, the foal will follow her with you walking beside it

    Bree is just beautiful. I used to work at a Stud farm years ago where we usually had at least 4-5 foals a year. Don't worry about the appearance of Lady's bag, as long as the foal is nursing and appears content, which Bree appears to be. Newborns sip at mom frequently for the first few days while their stomach and intestines begin doing their job. Even human babies only drink a couple ounces every 2-3 hours all day & night for the first couple weeks. Same concept. Lady will probably bag up as the foal grows, with her mammary glands expanding as the foal requires. Also the first milk is extremely rich and full of the all important colostrum which has the antibodies to set up the immune system. A foal which isn't getting enough is thin, weak, and listless, which Bree is not.
    I love that you are getting her used to the halter before she learns otherwise. We had foal halters on the little ones in the first week, but only under supervision. Because of their curiosity and taste testing of everything (taste is the first sense that is fully developed in all mammals), we never left halters on the babies until they were about a month old so they couldn't get caught up on something and get hurt. Bree will be Velcro on mom for the first month anyway.
    So Congratulations, your doing fine and so is Lady. I wouldn't supplement feed unless your vet says otherwise. A vet check is usually done for mare & foal in the first week anyway. Lady should come into season in around a month or so, so now's the time to decide if you are going to try for a foal for next year. Can't wait to find out and watch all the upcoming changes.

    Jim, you'd do Bree right with or without help in comments. I am aged, youngsters all grown, rode and deceased from old age. Watching vids on You Tube. Steve Young has a channel here, and he is awesome, running about all over UK and sometimes Europe sorting out very troubled horses. Recently a millionaire couple flew him and his wife to USA to sort a potential killer, a Missouri Foxtrotter purchased sight unseen and could not or would not be handled. He worked his magic and had the lady owner on board a fabulous gaited palomino within a week, and nothing wrong with him. He has techniques for groundwork which keeps the horse's attention fully on him, based on its two eyes, he backs off the moment any horse gives him both eyes. Really worth a look, he's about the best around at the moment. Love Bree, so trusting. Greetings from Australia.

    I absolutely love watching Jim work with this filly - he is so funny when he says what I do today may not be the same thing I do tomorrow - and that is EXACTLY how you need to work with young horses ( and I agree the younger the better for both of you). We had a Quarter horse mare that had her first baby at about 14 or 15 yrs old -this was a colt and my daughter (who was in the Navy while we had “custody” of her mare) wanted to keep him a stud to keep her mare’s blood line going. Having been around horses for a long time I knew in order to be able to handle this colt when he was a “teenager with raging hormones” I was going to have to be hands on from day one. I was grooming and picking up feet at 7 days - and continued 10 - 15 minutes at a time handling him every day and multiple times as day as work and life allowed. I also had a very knowledgeable friend at the barn we were at that helped with this as much as her schedule allowed. When he was 3 or 4 months old I hired a “natural horseman” type trainer to show me what to do next. Our colts nickname became Fonz because by the time he was a yearling he was so laid back that most people never knew he was still a colt. He remained a stud until he was 6 or 7 years old and most people were totally unaware that he wasn’t gelded. Patience is the key and I learned never to attempt anything new unless I had all the time in the world and was totally ready to keep my calm. Good luck with your little filly!

    Great video. To help Lady with milk production there's a couple things that may help. Water, more than usual, a mare and foal feed, and alfalfa hay. These can help. Lady is a first time mom and probably won't bag like a 2nd or third foal mare. You can check her teats every now and then and see if she has milk. As long as she has milk, Bree will get something and you might have to supplement her early with a foal feed. You can check with your vet and see what she thinks. Happy Birthday Baron. You do a great job with your videos and with your horses and you're a good horseman.

    Bree is beautiful , congrats on a healthy filly . I’m regards to her eating habits
    Foals suckle 30 times a day for short periods of time ( around 30 seconds ) .
    Doing a great job imprinting her .
    When I’m teaching to lead I wrap the lead line around they’re butt and if they do not move forward gently pull them until they give into the pressure .
    When they are older after weaning them during turn out time I leave a long thick lead line attached and thus teaches them to give to pressure ( when they step on it it teaches them to stop )
    Love watching your journey with Lady and Bree

    I have fond memories of our local furnace oil delivery fellow, who had a team of Belgians that pulled his oil wagon. Every year or so, once a foal was broken to halter, you would see baby proudly trotting alongside of mommy. Hitched to her harness. A three years later that foal would be in the traces next to 'uncle' steady to follow the route. Those horses always seemed to step a little faster when they came to a house where someone had carrots and water available. ❤

    We used to try to get foals used to wearing a halter fairly early, but we usually did it up and walking rather than sitting still. Horses, being herd animals, will often follow out of instinct if they trust you, so we'd stand next to them and get them to enjoying a good ear scratch, then quit scratching and kind of walk away a step or two and see if he follows; if he does, more scratches and pets for a minute. Also, circles are good, especially if you try walking the foal back and forth right next to mom. The proximity lowers the foal's stress level, and they're more compliant if they're relaxed. I'd also be careful about that big halter, it looked like it was slipping around and might put pressure on the trachea. Foal training should be enjoyable for the foal, as much as possible, to help develop trust and willingness to interact with people. Brenda's point about their attention spans was spot on, as you are about leaving on a good note. I'd say you're on the right track; you've obviously done it before. Lady's trust in you speaks volumes.

  • @A1A4SpeechPrivacy
    @A1A4SpeechPrivacy ปีที่แล้ว +5

    Happy Birthday Baron 🎉 For all training we would utilize the mother as much as possible. The foals in the wild learn the most from their mom's. We lead the foal on the ground next to their mom's then eventually pony the foal off of the mom. We would bring them trail riding a lot, that would desensitize them to everything that the mare would see. They would learn to react the way the mare would. But we had riding horses and not draft horses. I don't know how ponying off of a draft horse would work with that. Bree is watching how calm Lady is too while she is being halter trained. Lady is awesome!

    My draft foal started in a weanling halter and by the time she was six months old she was in a regular sized horse halter. It is remarkable how quickly the draft foals grow.💜 If you feel she is not getting enough milk, I would not hesitate to supplement her with FoalLac or something similar. She should be able to drink from a bucket with no problem. I raised an orphan draft foal without the benefit of a mare for her to nurse from and she thrived on the FoalLac from a bucket.

  • @kaz7809
    @kaz7809 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    Adding my 2 cents into training a young foal. If you go to the TH-cam Channel FRIESIAN HORSES you will see that they start halter training and tying of the foals at a very young age. They even take the mothers to a separate area to ride for a VERY BRIEF TIME, so the foal will learn to be ok being away from the mother. They DO NOT leave a foal tied UNATTENDED. While the foal is tied there is always someone watching the foal. They do these sessions frequently, but them keep them short. This helps the young foals to learn its ok to be tied or lead on a rope and aids in the weaning process down the road.

    Bree is so adorable 😍! You can sure see her thinking through everything. She'll be leading in no time at all and I bet that halter will fit very soon! Don't blink! They grow so fast. I love the way Barron practically takes his own halter off! Enjoyed the drone footage so much. You all make bringing in hay look almost fun! Lol! Your place is so beautiful this time of year! Bless you!

    I remember when Trudy and Abby visited Chris's farm in Germany. I'm glad he is visiting your farm! Welcome to America, Chris! Wonder if Bree should be offered a bottle a couple times a day just in case Lady's milk isn't feeling her little tummy? Happy Birthday Baron!! His daughter, Bree, was born close to his birthday!

    yes Jim, this city dweller does have farming roots. My great Grandfather and Grandpa farmed with draft hoses like you. and I love learning about all these terms and farm life!

    We brought up our mare's milk with extra molasses and some wheat germ oil. A mash with a couple of bittles of guiness will bring it up too! Lol.

    Bree will learn quickly by your method. Trust is what horse training is all about if they trust you then the commands are easy too learn by repeating them . Good too see Bree growing and strong. Does Lady need extra minerals so she has more milk? I know giving cows them helps.
