- A review of the equipment I'm running on the side of my aquarium and discussing the benefits and challenges it creates. Surface skimmer, OASE BioMaster pre-filter and auto top off are the three most quality-of-life improvements on my aquariums over the last decade.

Shrimps and skimmers continues to be a challenge. But what do you think of the auto topoff system? Do you run one? Are you considering adding one?
Thanks for the skimmer idea. I have been have a lot of trouble with mine since upgrading the oase intake tube since it produces a lot more flow. I made my own with some air line tubing and a plant weight.
Thanks for the shout out on my skimmer fix
No problem 👍
how can i order?
No more reef tank?! This is the first video of yours I've seen. I knew you had to have had one when I saw the Tunze ATO lol. I have a reef tank, about to dive into a planted one soon. No more reef tank for you?!
You could also potentially use something like a pipette to remove a little bit of the air pocket under the skimmer to get it to sit lower.
Put a O ring om the skimmer pipe to set the height and stop bobing. Only keep an eye on it because it can go lower than the O ring
I had the same problem with the bobbing. Since I have double tap values on the tubing to my canister filter, I solved the problem by closing the valve part way. This reduced the flow. That did the trick.
Yea that is a good trick too. Though I'm betting most folks would not want to reduce flow as cannisters usually are on the lower end already unless oversized for the tank. Also for those that may not know. Always restrict the flow with a valve on the outflow only. Thanks for watching!
Jeff, another great overview, these type of issues are usually skimmed over, and we have to learn thru a lot of trial and many errors. Thank you from NYC
Thanks for following along! I appreciate it. I'm working on a series of videos right now as I alluded to at the end of this one. I think you are going to love them. Im debating whether to let it grow out and then show off the full beginning to end or release it in two parts. hardscape and then planting/grow out reveal. Thoughts?
@@jmaquascaping Jeff, let it grow out, you always gives us enough detail and breakdown the processes for us. Shouldn't be hard to follow, I'm sure if any of the subscribers have questions, they'll put them in the chat.
Koool video Jeff as usual ❤❤🎉🎉 loved it. Regarding the shrimp being sucked into filter.it's inevitable and not because of the faulty inlet sucking up the shrimps, but it's in canister filter where bio films are generated at record level. Somehow i feel they can sense where the food is and intentionally venture into canister via inlet pipes. Though I am stating it purely from experience and dont have any proof / documentation to justify my claim.
I got my skimmer inlet covered with fine net bag (one like seachem bag for purigen).
It reduced the flow a bit so no bobbing and also none of my shrimps could go down the skimmer.
Doesn’t this also block the debris as well? Seems like a trade off?
i just used an airline tube and sucked out some of the air from the undersurface to get the depth of skimming that i wanted
i also got tired of pulling shrimp out of my pre filter. i used to use an aqua rio outflow skimmer. but honestly i have just gone back to the tried and true method of a small airstone on a tiny pump and it keeps the surface just as clean. i dont have issues with leaf litter. just tweeze them out when i see them.
Do you have a link for that skimmer weight please ?
I don't have a website. But you can reach out to the link I have in the description in Instagram and DM Tim. I believe this is still in prototype.
Tunze Osmolators and the like are way less relevant in fresh water tanks than they are in reef tanks, as constant water parameters are not such a huge issue.
Personally I just add the necessary RO water with a 5 l canister when the levels drops too much.
Remove some of the air under skimmer #2 with a pipette and it will sit lower in the water.
Oh yea that’s a good tip. I’ve done this as well with mixed results. Thanks for sharing!
thats what i do
It’s interesting, no, I am now.
What does this even mean
